In today’s lesson, we explored the delightful world of pumpkin spice with our special guest, Sam the Bat, who brought along pumpkin spice cookies that surprisingly contain no pumpkin. We learned that pumpkin spice is a blend of five key spices—cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice—that enhance the flavor of our favorite foods, and we also distinguished between spices and herbs. This fun adventure highlighted how different plant parts contribute to the unique tastes we enjoy in cooking!
  1. What are some spices that are in pumpkin spice cookies?

  3. Can you name a food that uses one of the spices mentioned in the article?

Welcome to the World of Pumpkin Spice!

Hey there! Today, we have a special guest at the Fort: Sam the Bat! Sam came by to say hello and brought some yummy pumpkin spice cookies. But guess what? These cookies don’t actually have any pumpkin in them!

What is Pumpkin Spice?

Sam explained that pumpkin spice is a mix of spices that remind us of pumpkin pie. These spices are ingredients from plants that add lots of flavor and smell to our food. You might have used spices like black pepper before, which is a common spice.

Spices vs. Herbs

Spices are different from herbs, which are dried leaves used to flavor food. Both spices and herbs make our meals taste extra special!

The Magic Spices in Pumpkin Spice

So, what spices make up pumpkin spice? There are five main ones:

  • Cinnamon: This spice comes from the bark of a cinnamon tree. It’s often used in oatmeal and hot chocolate.
  • Ginger: Ginger is a root with a unique spicy taste. It’s used in cookies like ginger snaps.
  • Nutmeg: Made from a seed, nutmeg is dried and ground into a powder. It has a special taste that’s hard to describe!
  • Cloves: These come from dried flower buds and have a strong smell, sometimes reminding people of the dentist’s office.
  • Allspice: Despite its name, allspice isn’t all the spices combined. It’s a berry that tastes like a mix of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and pepper.

Discovering the Flavors

Now that you know what makes up pumpkin spice, you might be able to taste each spice in the cookies! It’s amazing how different parts of plants like bark, roots, seeds, and flower buds come together to create such a delicious flavor.

  • Have you ever tried something with pumpkin spice flavor, like cookies or a drink? What did it taste like, and did you enjoy it?
  • Can you think of any other foods or drinks that use spices to make them taste special? What spices do you think are in them?
  • If you could create your own special spice mix, what would you call it, and what flavors would you include? Why did you choose those flavors?
  1. Spice Exploration: Gather small samples of the spices mentioned in the article: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. With the help of an adult, smell each spice and try to describe its scent. Which one do you like the most? Can you think of any foods or drinks that might use these spices?

  2. Create Your Own Spice Mix: Using the spices from the exploration, create your own spice mix. Mix a small amount of each spice in a bowl. What does your mix smell like? Give your mix a fun name and think about what foods you might want to add it to. Remember to ask an adult before trying it in any recipes!

  3. Spice Hunt: Next time you go grocery shopping with your family, look for foods that have the spices from pumpkin spice in their ingredients. Can you find any cereals, drinks, or snacks that include cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, or allspice? Make a list of what you find and share it with your friends or family.
