Hello, friends! Have you ever heard of the word “society”? A society is a big group of people who follow the same rules and share things like laws and resources. It’s like a giant community! People in a society might live far apart, like the Lopez family in Texas and the Wilson family in Maine, but they are still part of the same American society. They share things like the same flag and voting rights.
Society can also mean a group of people who do the same job, like doctors, or who care about the same things, like helping animals. Even if they don’t work together, they are part of the same society because they have something in common.
Let’s talk about being a good citizen! Good citizens are kind and helpful. You can be a good citizen by keeping your community clean and being nice to others. For example, holding the door open for someone is a good citizen action, while drawing on buildings is not.
Sharing with others and throwing trash in the garbage are also ways to be a good citizen. Remember, good citizens help make their communities better places!
Now, let’s learn about laws and rights. Rights are special things people can do, like speaking freely. But we must follow laws, which are rules that keep us safe. In the U.S., citizens have the right to speak their minds, but they must still obey the law.
It’s important to follow laws because they help everyone live safely and fairly. So, remember: rights are what we can do, and laws are rules we must follow.
Do you know what voting is? Voting is when people make important choices. For example, if your family can’t decide what to eat, you could vote to choose a dish. Grown-ups vote to choose leaders like mayors and the President.
On election day, people go to special places to vote. They choose their leaders by marking a ballot and putting it in a box. After counting the votes, a new leader is chosen.
Did you know that a long time ago, people were treated unfairly because of their skin color? This was called segregation. People like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. worked hard to change these unfair laws. They were called activists.
Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This helped end bus segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. gave famous speeches about equal rights, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation laws in America.
Let’s learn about government departments! Each department has a special job. The water department gives us clean water, and the fire department helps put out fires. The sanitation department keeps our community clean by picking up trash.
The police department keeps us safe, and the transportation department helps us travel. The recreation department takes care of fun places like parks and beaches. Each department helps make our community a better place!
Do you know how laws are made? There are three branches of government: legislative, executive, and judicial. The legislative branch makes laws, and Congress is in charge. The executive branch, led by the President, approves or vetoes laws. The judicial branch, with courts and judges, checks if laws are fair.
It’s like a team working together to make sure everything is just right!
Every four years, U.S. citizens vote for a new President. The President must be a U.S. citizen, at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for 14 years. The President leads the executive branch and is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The President works in the White House and signs important papers. They also travel to meet other leaders around the world. It’s a big job with lots of responsibilities!
Let’s visit Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States! It’s where the President lives and works. You can see the White House, the U.S. Capitol, and the Washington Monument.
There are also memorials for Presidents like Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. You can visit fun places like the National Zoo and museums with dinosaurs and spaceships. Washington, D.C. is full of exciting things to see and learn!
Thanks for joining our learning adventure! What was your favorite part? Let us know!
Community Helpers Role Play: Gather your friends or family and pretend to be different community helpers like firefighters, police officers, or sanitation workers. Think about what each helper does to make the community a better place. You can use toys or household items as props. Discuss how these roles are important in a society and how they help everyone live safely and happily.
Good Citizen Challenge: Create a list of good citizen actions you can do at home or school, like picking up litter, sharing toys, or helping a friend. Try to complete at least one action each day for a week. At the end of the week, share with your class or family how these actions made you feel and how they helped your community.
Voting at Home: Practice voting with your family! Choose something fun to vote on, like what movie to watch or what game to play. Create a simple ballot with choices and have everyone in your family cast their vote. Count the votes together and see which option wins. Discuss why voting is important and how it helps make fair decisions in a society.

Hello, boys and girls!
Do you know what society is? Society is a large group of people who share the same laws, rights, and resources. You can think of society as a type of community. However, society is not always a small community like a neighborhood. In a neighborhood, people live close by, but in a society, people can live far away from one another and still be part of the same community.
People in American society can also be very different. They can speak different languages and belong to different cultural communities, but they are all part of the same society. For example, the Lopez family lives in Texas, and the Wilson family lives in Maine. They live very far away from one another, but they are all members of American society. They share the same flag, voting rights, and leadership.
A society can also be a group of people who do the same type of work, like doctors, or people who believe in something together, like animal protection volunteers. Members of these societies may not work or volunteer at the same place, but they are part of the same society because of what they have in common.
So, what is a society? The people around you, near and far, are a society. What type of societies do you belong to? Let us know in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Look at the next set of pictures. One boy is pushing someone, and another boy is sharing his candy. Do you see any good citizens? Yes! Good citizens share with others. Pushing people does not show good citizenship.
In the last two pictures, we see a girl throwing trash in the garbage can and a boy throwing trash on the ground. Which of these pictures shows good citizenship? If you chose the picture of the girl throwing trash in the garbage can, then you’re correct! Good citizens keep their communities clean.
Congratulations, you’ve completed the worksheet! Awesome work!

Hello, boys and girls! Today we are going to talk about laws, rights, and responsibilities. Citizens have rights, which are special things that people are allowed to do. However, rights do not allow people to do whatever they want. Government leaders create laws to ensure this doesn’t happen. Laws are a set of rules that protect people and their property.
In the United States, citizens have freedom of speech, meaning they can talk about important things and share their opinions, but they still have to obey the laws. It is part of a citizen’s responsibility to follow the law. A responsibility is a duty or something that people must do.
Citizens also have the right to buy the things they need or want, but they cannot just take them, as that is against the law. Laws help citizens live safely and fairly with one another.
Let’s review: Rights are special things that citizens are allowed to do, and laws are rules that protect people and their property. The government creates laws to keep citizens and their property safe, and it is a citizen’s responsibility to follow the law.

Hi, boys and girls! Do you know what it means to vote? When people vote, they make an important choice. For example, if your family can’t decide what to eat for dinner, you could take a vote to choose a dish.
As a citizen, voting is very important. Grown-ups who are 18 and older vote when it is time to choose new leaders for a community, such as the mayor of a city or the governor of a state. Citizens even vote for the President of the United States.
On election day, citizens go to a special place, like a library or a school gym, to vote for leaders in their community. Inside, there are many voting booths that help keep votes private. Voters select their choices on a ballot and put it in the ballot box. After all the votes have been counted, a new leader is chosen.

Hello! Let’s get started on the lesson. People come in many shapes, colors, and sizes. We are all special in our own way.
Did you know that some years ago, people were treated unfairly because they were different? People were forced to live in different communities based on skin color. This was called segregation. Black children and white children were not allowed to go to the same schools, and people of different colors could not eat at the same restaurants.
Civil rights activists wanted to change these unfair laws. An activist is a person who works hard to make changes happen in society. During the 1950s, buses were segregated; white passengers sat in the front while black passengers sat in the back. One day, a brave woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. When she disobeyed, she was arrested, and her courage led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955. A boycott is when people stop using a service to create change.
During the Montgomery Bus Boycott, people who supported Rosa decided to stop riding buses and walk instead. This gained the attention of American lawmakers, and bus segregation was soon outlawed in 1956. Martin Luther King Jr. was also an activist and leader in the civil rights movement. He led many marches and gave many speeches about equal rights for all. His most famous speech was called “I Have a Dream.” Later, Martin Luther King Jr. won the Nobel Peace Prize for his successful efforts.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation laws in America, allowing people to live, work, and eat wherever they wanted.
Let’s review: Segregation is when people are separated from one another. People in America were once segregated based on skin color. Activists such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. were leaders in the civil rights movement, advocating for equal rights for all. The Montgomery Bus Boycott led to the end of bus segregation in 1956, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation laws in America.

Hello, everyone! Let’s learn about government departments. City and state governments have many departments, each with a special job to take care of different needs in the community.
People need resources such as water to drink, cook, and bathe. The local water department provides clean, safe water for the community and supplies water sources for emergencies, such as fires. The fire department uses lots of water to stop fires and rescue people in danger.
The sanitation department helps the community stay clean by picking up trash and cleaning local streets and parks. Imagine what a mess there would be without the sanitation department!
There are many other important government departments. The police department keeps communities safe from crime, the transportation department helps people travel on buses and trains, and the recreation department takes care of fun places like parks, beaches, and amusement parks.
Let’s review: Local governments have many departments, each with a special job. The water department provides water resources for the community, while the police and fire departments help people in danger and keep the community safe. Hi, boys and girls! Do you know how laws are made? There are three branches of government in the United States, each with a special responsibility in the law-making process.

A bill cannot become a law until it is approved by the executive branch. The President of the United States is the leader of the executive branch and can approve or veto a bill. When a bill is vetoed, it is rejected. When the President signs a bill, it becomes a law. The executive branch also enforces laws to ensure that people follow them.
The judicial branch is made up of courts and judges. The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court in the judicial branch, and its members review laws to ensure they are fair.

Do you know what the President does? Let’s find out! U.S. citizens vote for a new President every four years. They choose from a group of people called candidates who want to become the next President of the United States.
However, not everyone can be President. There are a few special rules: The President must be a U.S. citizen born in America, at least 35 years old, and a resident of the U.S. for at least 14 years.
When a new President is elected, they become the leader of the executive branch and are known as the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces. The ceremony marking the beginning of a new President’s duties takes place in front of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. At the ceremony, the new leader promises to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States. Then, the new President moves to the White House to live and work.
Each morning, the President goes to the Oval Office to work. One of the President’s duties is to sign important papers, including bills passed by Congress. The U.S. President nominates a group of people who will advise and assist them in their duties, forming the Cabinet of the United States. Ambassadors, Supreme Court judges, and other senior officials are also nominated by the President. The President travels all over the world to talk to other leaders.

Washington, D.C. is where each U.S. President lives and works. That’s why you can see the President’s portraits and statuettes around the city. Washington, D.C. is home to the U.S. government, where many important laws and decisions are made.
Look, it’s the National Mall! It is a large park with many landmarks along its length. The city was named after George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was one of the founders of the American government. The Washington Monument was built in his honor.
If we go upstairs, we can see the whole city and more important places from there. There’s the White House, where American Presidents live and work, and this is the U.S. Capitol building, where Congress leaders meet to make important decisions about our country.
To the south and west of the Washington Monument, there are memorials for famous American Presidents, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. Thomas Jefferson was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence, which made July 4th an important holiday in America, known as Independence Day. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President and signed the Emancipation Proclamation to free all Americans from slavery.
What else can we find in Washington, D.C.? Lots more! Like the Pentagon building, where the U.S. Department of Defense works hard to keep our country safe.
Where should we go now to have some fun? We can visit the National Zoo to see animals and birds from around the world, or we can visit the National Museum of Natural History to see prehistoric animals like dinosaurs and saber-toothed tigers. We could even visit the National Air and Space Museum to see airplanes, rockets, and spaceships that reached the moon.
Washington, D.C. is a very interesting city! We have visited lots of places, but there is still so much to see. We will definitely come back again! What did you like best in Washington, D.C.? What landmarks would you like to see?
