What’s Cooking?

We have a book called “What’s Cooking” by Joshua David Stein, with pictures by Julia Rothman. Have you ever wondered how many ways you can cook an egg? Or if you can fry ice cream? What about gelato? Do you know what gelato is made of? Let’s find out together!

Cooking Fun

If you fry a potato and a tomato, can you fry gelato? Yes, you can! Gelato is a type of ice cream, and fried ice cream is a yummy treat. It’s warm on the outside and cold on the inside!

Do you know what gelato is made of? It’s made of milk!

Can You Can?

Can you put clams in a can? Yes, you can! You can also put jam in a jar. But you can’t jam clams. That’s called clams angela, which is a fancy name for chili.

Juicy Fun

If you squeeze grape juice and freeze it, you get an ice lolly! But if you squeeze an ice lolly, it becomes a sticky mess. Have you ever done that?

Salad Tossing

If you toss a salad, should you throw it? No, don’t throw it! Tossing mixes the ingredients, but throwing makes a mess. Have you been eating your salad? Great job!

Pizza Magic

Did you know pizza dough is thrown in the air and spun around? The person who does this is called a pizza maker. They catch it too!

Eggs Everywhere

Do you like eggs? How do you like them? Scrambled, fried, or baked? I love all kinds of eggs!

Grapes and Raisins

Is a raisin an old grape? Yes, it is! If you leave a grape out, it turns into a raisin.

Leftovers and Peas

If you eat leftovers, can you eat left-unders? Hmm, maybe! Do frozen peas grow on frozen trees? No, they start as fresh peas and are frozen to last longer.

Veggie Fun

Spinach is creamed, and cucumbers are cubed. Which veggie is your favorite? I love spinach and tomatoes!

Cooking Adventures

Beef is roasted, and bread is toasted. Eggs are boiled, and salmon is grilled. Cookies are cooked and tested. Yum!

Who Does the Dishes?

Who does the dishes at your house? Do you help? It’s important to clean up after cooking.

  • What is your favorite food, and how do you like it cooked? Have you ever tried cooking it yourself or with someone else?
  • Have you ever helped in the kitchen at home? What did you do, and how did it make you feel?
  • Imagine you could create a new dish using any ingredients you like. What would you make, and what would you call it?
  1. Egg-citing Experiments: Let’s explore different ways to cook an egg! With the help of an adult, try boiling, scrambling, and frying an egg. Observe how each method changes the egg. What do you notice about the texture and taste? Which one is your favorite? Draw a picture of your favorite egg dish and share it with your friends.

  2. Fruit Transformation: Let’s see how grapes turn into raisins! Take a few grapes and leave them in a sunny spot for a few days. Check them every day and see how they change. What happens to the grapes? Why do you think they change like that? Draw a picture of a grape and a raisin side by side to show the transformation.

  3. Pizza Dough Dance: Become a pizza maker! With some play dough, practice tossing and spinning it in the air like a real pizza maker. How high can you toss it without dropping? Imagine you’re making a pizza—what toppings would you add? Create your own pizza masterpiece with craft materials and share your creation with the class.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. Have you been doing anything exciting at school today? Who did you play with? Well, I’m glad you had fun!

[Music] Today, we have a very special topic to talk about: food! How much do you like food? Well, I don’t know about you, but I love food—talking about food, preparing food, everything about food!

In this book, it’s called “What’s Cooking” by Joshua David Stein and illustrated by Julia Rothman. Have you ever wondered how many ways you can cook eggs? Can you fry ice cream? How about gelato? What’s gelato made of? Do you know? Well, you may find the answers in this book. It’s definitely a book you can enjoy with your parents or friends, discovering food, and maybe it might inspire you to go cook a dish or two in the kitchen with your mom or dad.

Awesome! Warning though, you might get hungry! Let’s have a look at “What’s Cooking.”

If I fry a strip of potato and a slice of tomato, can I fry a scoop of gelato? Actually, yes! Gelato is a type of ice cream, and fried ice cream is a real dessert. It’s warm on the outside and cold on the inside, and delicious all the way through!

Do you know what gelato is made of? It’s actually made of milk.

Can I can clams? Can I can jam? Clams, huh? That’s pretty interesting! You can can chopped-up clams and clam juice. Jam you can can, and you can jar it too. You can’t jam clams, but you can certainly jelly them—that’s called clams angela, which is a fancy word for chili.

Squeeze grape juice, freeze the juice, and you get an ice lolly! Squeeze an ice lolly, and it becomes a sticky mess. I bet you’ve done that, right?

If I toss a salad, can I throw a salad? I don’t suggest you throw a salad at the dinner table, though! A salad can be tossed to mix up all the ingredients, but it should never be thrown. Have you been eating your salad? Good job!

That’s how pizza is made—it is thrown up in the air and spun around and around. The person who throws it is called a pizza maker. It’s their job to catch it too!

Eggs! I adore eggs! Do you like eggs? And how do you like your eggs? Beaten, broken, scrambled, fried, baked? My favorite is to be honest, all of them! I love sunny-side-up eggs and scrambled eggs too.

If turkeys are stuffed with stuffing, what else can I stuff? Oh, there are lots of things you can stuff: jalapeños, chicken, tofu, fish, mushrooms—oh, there’s so many! You can stuff peppers with rice and cabbage with meat, and even meat with meat—that’s called a ballotine.

Well, if I stop stuffing, can I dump dumplings? No, but you can stuff dumplings with pork for gyoza in Japan, with cheese for pierogies in Ukraine, and with soup for xiaolongbao in China. Well, guess what? My kids love dumplings! But who doesn’t love dumplings, right? Have you ever had one? You can try making some in the kitchen—they’re great!

Is this a very old grape or a very new raisin? My guess is a very new raisin because if you left a grape out that long, it would be moldy!

If I eat leftovers, can I eat left-unders? Well, it depends! Do frozen peas grow on frozen trees? I wonder—do they? No, frozen peas start off as fresh peas grown on vines, but after they are harvested, they’re frozen so they last longer.

The spinach is creamed, and the manji is steamed. The garlic is minced, and the lettuce is rinsed. The cucumbers are cubed, and the squash has been squared. The tomatoes are stewed, and the parsnip is paired. Which one’s your favorite veggie? Well, I love spinach and lettuce. I like cucumbers too, and I also like tomatoes!

The beef has been roasted, the bread has been toasted. The eggs are boiled, then chilled. The salmon is oiled, then grilled. Melon is scooped, lemon is zested, cookies are cooked, cookies are tested.

[Music] Now the only question is, who does the dishes? Who does the dishes in your house? Do you do the dishes? Are you sure?

Oh, a potato can be mashed, pushed, hatched, splashed, dreamed, peeled, and more! Potatoes, I love potatoes too! How much do you like potatoes? I like them in potato salad and fries. I know it’s bad, but I love mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, and roasted potatoes—they’re so good!

Hope you enjoyed “What’s Cooking!” Hope this inspires you to go play around in the kitchen and have lots of fun. Thanks so much for joining us today!
