In this Circle Time lesson, Caroline and her friend Sophie welcome a special guest, Caitie, who leads the children in singing “Wheels on the Bus” while showcasing a toy school bus. The lesson also includes a story titled “Beach Day Birthday,” where children learn about planning a birthday celebration at the beach, the importance of sun protection, and vocabulary related to the story. Finally, they engage in a fun activity by brainstorming items needed for their own beach day birthday party.
  1. What did Caitie bring to show us at Circle Time?
  2. Why is it important to wear sunblock at the beach?
  3. What fun things can we bring to our own beach day birthday party?

Welcome to Circle Time!

Hello, friends! I’m Caroline from the Khan Academy Kids Team, and I’m so happy to see you today. I’m here with my friend Sophie. Hi, Sophie!

Meet Our Special Guest

Today, we have a special guest, Caitie from Super Simple Songs and Caitie’s Classroom. She’s here to sing a song with us. Hi, Caitie!

Caitie brought a toy school bus to show us. It has wheels that go round and round and doors that open and shut. Just like the song “Wheels on the Bus.” Let’s sing it together!

Sing Along with “Wheels on the Bus”

Let’s make big wheels with our arms and sing about the different parts of the bus:

  • The wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town.
  • The doors on the bus go open and shut, all through the town.
  • The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish, all through the town.
  • The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep, all through the town.
  • The people on the bus go up and down, all through the town.
  • The babies on the bus go wah, wah, wah, all through the town.
  • The mommies and daddies on the bus go sh, sh, sh, all through the town.

We even made the bus go faster! That was fun. Thanks for singing with us, Caitie!

Story Time: “Beach Day Birthday”

Now, let’s read a story called “Beach Day Birthday” by Cynthia Platt. It’s about Ollo’s birthday, his favorite day of the year. He invites his friends to the lake to celebrate.

They spread out blankets, put on sunblock, and jump into the beautiful blue water. They play games like beach volleyball and frisbee. Do you know why it’s important to wear sunblock? It protects your skin from the sun!

Later, they build a sandcastle and have a surprise birthday cake for Ollo. He makes a wish for another fun birthday next year. Have you ever surprised a friend on their birthday?

Fun Activities and Words

Let’s learn some words from the story. The word “beach” starts with the letter B, which makes the “ba” sound. Can you think of other words that start with B?

We also learned about words that start with “bl” like “blanket” and “blast.” Can you find the word “blanket” in a sentence? How about “blast”?

Plan Your Own Beach Day Birthday

Let’s pretend to plan our own beach day birthday. What do we need to bring?

  • A towel or blanket
  • An umbrella
  • Sunglasses and a sun hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Flip flops
  • A bucket and shovel
  • Goggles for swimming
  • A bus to take all our friends
  • Party hats and a birthday cake

Now, you can set up a birthday party at home with your family or stuffed animals. Have fun and tell us about it next time!

Goodbye for now from Caroline, Sophie, and the Khan Academy Kids Team. Have a wonderful day!

  • What is your favorite part of the “Wheels on the Bus” song, and why do you like it? Can you think of any other fun songs that have actions you can do with your arms or hands?
  • Imagine you are planning a beach day birthday party like Ollo. What games would you play with your friends, and what special surprise would you plan for the birthday person?
  • Have you ever been to a beach or a park for a birthday party? What did you do there, and what made it special for you?
  1. Bus Adventure Walk: Go on a walk around your neighborhood with a grown-up and look for things that remind you of the “Wheels on the Bus” song. Can you find something that goes round and round like the wheels? Or something that opens and shuts like the bus doors? Draw pictures of what you find and share them with your friends or family.

  2. Beach Day Birthday Role Play: Set up a pretend beach day birthday party at home. Use a blanket as your beach towel, and bring out some toys to play with. Pretend to put on sunscreen and wear a sun hat. Invite your stuffed animals or family members to join the party. What games will you play? What kind of cake will you have? Use your imagination and have fun!

  3. Letter Hunt: Go on a letter hunt in your house or classroom. Look for objects that start with the letter “B” like in “beach” or “blanket.” Can you find at least five things? Write them down or draw pictures of them. Share your list with a friend and see if they can find different “B” words!
