Learning to Cross the Street Safely

Hi there! Today, we’re going to learn how to cross the street safely. It’s important to know these tips so we can stay safe when we’re outside. Let’s get started!

Hold Hands with an Adult

When you want to cross the street, always hold hands with an adult. This helps keep you safe and makes sure you’re not alone.

Watch the Traffic Lights

Have you seen the traffic lights before? They tell us when it’s safe to cross the street. Here’s what they mean:

  • Red Light: Stop! Don’t cross the street.
  • Green Light: Go! But first, check both ways to make sure no cars are coming.

Look Left and Right

Before you cross, always look to your left and then to your right. If no cars are coming, you can cross safely.

Use the Crosswalk

Do you see those white lines on the road? That’s a crosswalk. Always use the crosswalk when you cross the street. It’s the safest place to walk.

Stay Focused

When you’re crossing the street, don’t play with toys or get distracted. Stay focused and keep your eyes on the road.

Other Safe Ways to Cross

If there’s no crosswalk or traffic light, look for a bridge or tunnel to cross safely. These are special places where you can cross without worrying about cars.

Remember the Safety Tips

Now you know how to cross the street safely! Remember to hold hands with an adult, watch the traffic lights, look both ways, use the crosswalk, and stay focused. You’re doing great!

Thanks for learning with us today. Stay safe and have fun!

Discussion Questions

  1. Can you think of a time when you crossed the street with an adult? What did you notice about the traffic lights or the crosswalk?
  2. Why do you think it’s important to look both ways before crossing the street, even if the light is green?
  3. Have you ever seen a bridge or tunnel for crossing the street? How do you think they help keep people safe?

Lesson Activities

  1. Traffic Light Craft: Create your own traffic light using colored paper or crayons. Draw three circles on a piece of paper and color them red, yellow, and green. Discuss with your friends or family what each color means and practice saying “Stop” for red, “Wait” for yellow, and “Go” for green. You can even role-play crossing the street using your traffic light!

  2. Street Crossing Practice: Set up a pretend street in your classroom or at home using tape to mark the crosswalk. Take turns being the pedestrian and the traffic light. Practice holding hands with a partner, looking left and right, and crossing safely when the “light” turns green. Remember to stay focused and not get distracted!

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a short walk with an adult around your neighborhood. Look for traffic lights, crosswalks, and other safe places to cross the street. Count how many traffic lights you see and notice the colors. Talk about what you see and how you can use these safety tips in real life.
