In today’s Storytime lesson, we explored the themes of love and friendship through two delightful stories: “While We Can’t Hug” and “Hedgehog Heart.” The first story teaches us that even without physical touch, we can express our affection through gestures like waving, smiling, and sharing creative activities. The second story encourages us to reflect on the unique qualities of our hearts and how they connect us to others, emphasizing the importance of kindness and love in various forms.
  1. How can we show our friends we love them without hugging?
  2. What makes your heart special, like the hearts in the story?
  3. Can you think of a fun way to be kind to someone today?

Welcome to Storytime!

Hello, friends! How are you today? I hope you’re having lots of fun playing with your friends and enjoying the sunshine. I also hope you’re staying cozy and reading lots of books!

While We Can’t Hug

Today, we have a special story called “While We Can’t Hug” by Ian McLaughlin and Paulie Dunbar. Let’s see what it’s all about!

Hedgehog and Tortoise are the best of friends. They want to give each other a big hug, but they can’t touch. What can they do?

Owl has a great idea! “Don’t worry,” says Owl. “There are lots of ways to show someone you love them.”

Hedgehog waves at Tortoise, and Tortoise smiles. Tortoise makes a funny face, and Hedgehog laughs. They write letters to each other. Tortoise dances, and Hedgehog joins in. Hedgehog blows a kiss, and Tortoise catches it and sends three back! Tortoise sings a song, and Hedgehog plays along.

They even paint pictures to show everyone they are friends. Even though they can’t hug, they know they are loved.

Isn’t that a sweet story? It shows us that we can show love in many ways, like being kind and giving hugs when we can!

Hedgehog Heart

Now, let’s read “Hedgehog Heart” by James Antoneau and Nikki Slade Robinson. It’s all about hearts!

Meet my new friend Michael. I love Michael! His heart reminds me of something special. Let’s see what different hearts are like!

Daddy’s heart is like a grizzly bear because he gives big bear hugs. Mommy’s heart is like an owl because she’s wise. Grandma’s heart is like an elephant because she never forgets you. Granddad’s heart is like a cat, shy at first but then it purrs. Mr. Wilson’s heart is like a falcon, keeping everyone safe. Aunt Claire’s heart is like a drooling dog, giving slobbery kisses. My sister’s heart is like a bird, singing up to the sky. Baby Juliet’s heart is like a puppy, always wanting love.

Some hearts are like octopuses, holding you tight. My cousin Rachel’s heart is like a monkey, cheeky and fun. Can you guess what Michael’s heart is like? It’s a hedgehog! Sometimes it’s shy and curls up, but it slowly uncurls to find love.

And my heart? It’s a lion, roaring love to everyone!

What is your heart like? Think about it and let us know!

Thank You for Reading!

Thank you for reading with us! We hope you enjoyed the stories. Remember to be kind and show love in your own special way. See you next time! Bye-bye!

  • How do you show your friends or family that you care about them, even if you can’t give them a hug? Can you think of some fun ways to show love, just like Hedgehog and Tortoise did?
  • In the story “Hedgehog Heart,” different hearts are compared to animals. If you could choose an animal to describe your heart, what would it be and why? What special qualities does your heart have?
  • Think about a time when you felt loved by someone. What did they do to make you feel special? How can you make someone else feel loved today?
  1. Heart Matching Game: Let’s play a fun game to match hearts with animals! Draw different animals on cards, like a bear, owl, elephant, and more. On separate cards, draw hearts with different expressions, like a big bear hug or a wise owl. Mix them up and try to match each animal with the heart that describes them. Can you think of other animals and what their hearts might be like?

  2. Love in Action: Think of someone you love, like a friend or family member. What can you do to show them you care without using words? Maybe you can draw them a picture, make a funny face, or sing them a song. Try doing one of these things today and see how it makes them feel!

  3. Heart Stories: Imagine your heart is an animal. What kind of animal would it be? Is it a playful puppy, a wise owl, or maybe a shy hedgehog? Draw a picture of your heart animal and tell a story about how it shows love to others. Share your story with your friends or family!

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the Storytime Family. How are you today? I hope you’ve been having lots of fun at school, playing with your friends and enjoying the outdoors. I also hope you’ve been keeping warm and toasty and reading lots of books by yourself!

Today, we have “While We Can’t Hug” by Ian McLaughlin and Paulie Dunbar. Let’s get started!

Hedgehog and Tortoise were the best of friends. They wanted to give each other a great big hug, but they weren’t allowed to touch.

“Don’t worry,” said Owl. “There are lots of ways to show someone you love them.”

Hedgehog tried a wave that made Tortoise smile. Tortoise made a funny face that made Hedgehog laugh. Hedgehog wrote a letter, and Tortoise wrote one back. When Tortoise did a little dance, Hedgehog joined in too. Hedgehog blew a kiss across the gap between them. Tortoise saw it, caught it, and sent three back. Tortoise sang a song, and Hedgehog played along.

Then they both painted pictures so that everyone would know they were friends. Through rain and shine, they could not touch and they could not hug, but they both knew that they were loved.

Wasn’t that such a sweet story? It goes to show that besides saying “I love you” and giving hugs, we can show love in many other ways. You can show love to your parents by being really kind to them, and don’t forget the hugs! Hugs are always good and never get old—that’s what I always tell my boys.

Today we have “Hedgehog Heart” by James Antoneau and Nikki Slade Robinson. Let’s have a look!

Hedgehog Heart:

Here’s my new friend Michael. I love Michael! His heart reminds me of something, but I don’t know what. Sometimes you know a person’s heart. For example, Daddy’s heart is a grizzly bear; he gives the biggest bear hugs. Mommy’s heart is an owl; she’s so wise with her love. Grandma’s heart is an elephant; her love never forgets you. Granddad’s heart is a cat; shy at first but then it purrs. Mr. Wilson’s heart is a falcon, keeping the whole class safe in the nest. Aunt Claire’s heart is a drooling dog; she gives us slobbery kisses. My sister’s heart is a bird; it perches and sings up to the sky. Baby Juliet’s heart is a puppy; woof woof! She wants all your love.

Some people’s hearts are octopuses; they hold you tight and are good to get tangled up in. My cousin Rachel’s heart is a monkey; she’s so cheeky to the people she loves. Can you guess what my friend Michael’s heart is? I think I know—it’s a hedgehog! Sometimes it curls up afraid in a spiky ball, and it’s hard to get close. But slowly, slowly it will uncurl and then it forages around for pieces of love.

And my heart is a lion, roaring my love out to everyone.

Hope you enjoyed “Hedgehog Heart.” What’s your heart like? Leave us a comment and tell us about your big heart! If you’d like a copy of this book, the links are in the description below.
