In this lesson, we explored freckles, which are small spots on the skin caused by an increase in melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. We learned that freckles can vary among individuals, often appearing more in those with lighter skin, and can change over time due to factors like sun exposure. Ultimately, the lesson encourages embracing freckles as a unique aspect of one’s identity.

Discovering Freckles: A Fun Guide to Understanding Your Skin

Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed little spots on your skin? These are called freckles, and they can be a fun part of what makes you unique! Let’s dive into what freckles are and why some people have them while others don’t.

What Are Freckles?

Freckles are small, tan or light brown spots that can appear on your face, shoulders, arms, or other parts of your body. Sometimes, these spots can join together to form larger patches. Freckles are made of something called melanin, which is a pigment that gives color to our hair, eyes, and skin.

Why Do We Have Freckles?

Melanin plays an important role in protecting our skin from the sun. When we’re out in the sun, our skin makes more melanin to help prevent sunburn. This is why we get a tan after spending time in the sun. For some people, certain spots on their skin produce more melanin than others, creating freckles. So, freckles are just areas where more melanin is made!

Who Gets Freckles?

Not everyone has freckles. People with lighter skin and eyes are more likely to have them. If your parents have freckles, you might have them too. However, people with darker skin and eyes can also get freckles, and so can those whose parents don’t have them. Even some animals, like dogs and cats, can have freckles!

Do Freckles Change?

Yes, freckles can change over time! In the winter or when you’re not in the sun much, freckles can fade or even disappear. As you grow older, you might notice changes in your freckles. Kids, teenagers, and young adults usually have more freckles than older adults.

Embrace Your Freckles!

Freckles are a special part of who you are. They can change with the seasons and as you grow, making them an interesting part of your skin’s story. Now you know a bit more about what makes you unique!

  • Have you ever noticed freckles on your skin or on someone else? What do you think makes them special or unique?
  • Why do you think some people have freckles while others don’t? Can you think of any other features that make people different from each other?
  • Imagine you have a friend who is curious about freckles. How would you explain to them why freckles might change with the seasons or as you grow older?
  1. Freckle Hunt: Go on a freckle hunt! Spend some time outside with a friend or family member and see if you can spot freckles on each other. Look closely at your arms, face, and shoulders. Can you find any freckles? If you have a pet, check if they have any freckles too! Talk about how the freckles might change when you spend more time in the sun.

  2. Freckle Art: Create a piece of art inspired by freckles. Use a piece of paper and some crayons or markers to draw a face or an animal. Then, use a brown crayon or marker to add freckles. You can make them small and scattered or big and clustered. Think about how freckles make your drawing unique, just like they do for people and animals!

  3. Melanin Experiment: Try a simple experiment to understand how melanin works. You’ll need two pieces of white paper and some colored pencils. On one paper, draw a sun and color it brightly. On the other paper, draw a face and use a brown pencil to add freckles. Place both papers in a sunny spot for a few hours. Check back later to see if the sun has changed the colors. Discuss how the sun affects our skin and why melanin is important.
