share us on:

In today’s lesson, we explored the reasons behind crying when we’re sad, using the example of Squeaks, who felt upset after his favorite soccer ball popped. Crying serves as a natural way to communicate our emotions to others, fostering understanding and support, while our tears contain elements that can help alleviate emotional pain. Ultimately, the lesson emphasizes that feeling sad is normal, and with time and support, we can begin to feel better.
  1. Why do you think it’s okay to cry when you’re sad?
  2. How can we help our friends feel better when they are sad?
  3. What do you think happens to our feelings after we cry?

Why Do We Cry When We’re Sad?

Hey there! Today, we’re going to talk about something that happens to all of us: crying when we’re sad. Let’s find out why this happens and why it’s important!

Feeling Sad and Crying

Our friend Squeaks was playing with his favorite soccer ball, but it accidentally hit a rock and popped. Squeaks felt really sad about it because it was his favorite ball. It’s okay to feel sad sometimes, and crying is a natural way our bodies show that we’re upset.

Why Do We Cry?

Scientists aren’t completely sure why we cry when we’re sad, but they have some ideas. One big reason is that crying helps us communicate our feelings to others. When someone sees you crying, they know you’re sad without you having to say anything. This helps people understand each other better and be more caring.

Helping Each Other

When we know someone is sad, we can try to help them feel better. For example, if your friend is upset, you might give them a hug or just be there for them. This makes the world a nicer place because we can support each other when things are tough.

What’s in Our Tears?

Did you know that tears are mostly made of water? They also have salt and something special that can help with pain. This is like a natural medicine that our bodies make to help us feel better. So, when you cry, your tears can actually help you hurt less, even if it’s just your heart that’s hurting.

Feeling Better Over Time

After crying, you might start to feel a little better. Just like Squeaks, who began to feel better after some time, you’ll also feel less sad as time goes on. It’s all part of understanding our feelings and how we show them.

If you have more questions about feelings or how our bodies work, you can ask a grown-up to help you reach out to us. We’re always here to help you learn more!

See you next time!

  • Have you ever cried when you felt sad? Can you share a time when that happened and how you felt afterward?
  • Why do you think it’s important to show our feelings, like crying when we’re sad, to others? How do you feel when you see someone else crying?
  • What are some ways you can help a friend who is feeling sad? Can you think of a time when you helped someone feel better?
  1. Emotion Journal: Start a small journal where you can draw or write about your feelings each day. Try to notice when you feel happy, sad, or any other emotion. Share your journal with a family member or friend and talk about how you felt. This will help you understand your emotions better and see how they change over time.
  2. Tear Experiment: With the help of an adult, try a simple experiment to see what’s in tears. You can pretend to cry by cutting an onion (ask an adult to help with this). Notice how your eyes water. Talk about how tears are made of water and salt, and how they help us feel better. Discuss why you think our bodies make tears when we’re sad.
  3. Helping Hands: Think about a time when you saw someone who was sad. What did you do to help them feel better? Draw a picture or act out a scene with your toys showing how you can help a friend who is upset. This will help you practice being kind and supportive to others, just like you would want them to be for you.
