In this lesson, students are introduced to the imaginative concept of “Cushion Mountain,” a cozy place made of soft cushions where they can jump, lie down, and take naps. The lesson emphasizes the comfort of cushions filled with feathers, which come from birds, and encourages children to engage in imaginative play by pretending to relax on Cushion Mountain and sing a lullaby. Overall, it highlights the joy of learning through creativity and exploration.
  1. What do you think it feels like to jump on the cushions at Cushion Mountain?
  2. Can you tell me what a lullaby is and why it helps us sleep?
  3. What do you like about feathers and how they make our cushions soft?

Welcome to Cushion Mountain!

Oh, look at that! What’s floating in the air? It’s a feather! Feathers are soft and fluffy, and they sometimes come out of cushions. Cushions have feathers inside to make them nice and soft. Isn’t that cool?

Exploring Cushion Mountain

Imagine a big, soft place called Cushion Mountain. It’s made of lots and lots of cushions! You can jump on them, lie down, and even take a nap. It’s like a big, cozy bed!

Time for a Nap

Our friends, Wibbly and Piggly, are getting ready to sleep on Cushion Mountain. They feel very comfy and cozy. Do you like feeling comfy too? It’s nice to have a soft place to rest.

Sing a Lullaby

When it’s time to sleep, we can sing a lullaby. A lullaby is a gentle song that helps us relax and fall asleep. Let’s sing about Cushion Mountain:

“Cozy cushions under your head on Cushion Mountain. Cozy cushions make a soft bed on Cushion Mountain. Cozy cushions under your feet on Cushion Mountain. On Cushion Mountain. On Cushion Mountain.”

Learning About Feathers

Did you know that feathers come from birds? Birds use feathers to fly and keep warm. Feathers are light and soft, just like the ones in our cushions!

Let’s Pretend!

Now, let’s pretend we’re on Cushion Mountain. Close your eyes and imagine you’re lying on a big pile of soft cushions. Can you feel how comfy it is? Maybe you can even pretend to be a bird flying with feathers!

Isn’t learning fun? We can discover so many things just by using our imagination. Have a cozy day on Cushion Mountain!

  • What do you think it would feel like to jump on Cushion Mountain? Can you think of a time when you felt really comfy and cozy?
  • If you could create your own Cushion Mountain, what colors and shapes would you use for the cushions? Why do you like those colors and shapes?
  • Feathers help birds fly and keep warm. Can you think of other things that help animals or people stay warm or do special things? What are they?
  1. Feather Hunt: Let’s go on a feather hunt! Look around your home or classroom for anything that feels soft and fluffy like a feather. It could be a pillow, a stuffed animal, or even a piece of clothing. Once you find something, share it with your friends and talk about how it feels. Is it as soft as the feathers in Cushion Mountain?

  2. Build Your Own Cushion Mountain: Gather some cushions, pillows, or soft blankets and create your own Cushion Mountain at home or in the classroom. Once you’ve built it, take turns jumping on it or lying down. How does it feel? Can you imagine you’re on the real Cushion Mountain? Maybe you can even pretend to be Wibbly or Piggly getting ready for a nap!

  3. Feather Art: Let’s make some feather art! Use paper, crayons, and any craft materials you have to draw or create your own feather. Think about the colors and shapes you want to use. Once you’re done, share your feather art with the class. How do your feathers compare to the ones in the cushions?

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“Oh, what’s that? Whoa, whoa, it’s a feather! It came out of that cushion. Yeah, cushions have feathers in them to make them soft. Didn’t you know that? Yes, I did actually. Show me! Wibbly here, blow it back. There! That’s the top of Cushion Mountain. Piggly and I are going to go to sleep now. I’m comfy, are you comfy, Piggly? Piggly’s comfy too, so we’re both comfy now. Thank you! Oh, what do I do then? Sing us a lullaby. Cozy cushions under your head on Cushion Mountain. Cozy cushions make a soft bed on Cushion Mountain. Cozy cushions under your feet on Cushion Mountain. On Cushion Mountain. On Cushion Mountain.”
