Hi everyone! Today, we’re going to read a special story called “A Book of Love and Family” by Joe Whittaker. Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
I love spending time with my dad. I jump on his knees and give him a big hug. It feels like I’m a little bird in a warm nest. Do you feel safe with your dad too?
When I’m with my dad, I feel like a brave queen in a castle. I’m not scared of the dark, monsters, or even the neighbor’s dog. I can chase away anything with just a wave of my hand!
My dad lifts me up and spins me around. I feel like a rocket flying high in the sky. From up there, my dad looks so tiny!
When I ride my bike, my dad cheers me on. “Go, go, champion!” he says. He believes in me, so I believe in myself too. When I finish, he jumps up and down like a happy kangaroo!
At the pool, I jump into the water, knowing my dad will catch me. We pretend he’s a boat and I’m a pirate. It’s so much fun!
We imagine flying on a magic carpet or traveling to the moon. We can be anything we want—acrobats, astronauts, or even lion tamers!
On hot days, we lay in the yard and listen to the wind. It’s so peaceful and calm.
Sometimes, we play a game where my dad pretends to be a silly “arm monster.” I run and laugh, and he always knows when to stop and be nice again.
Sometimes, I get angry like a storm. My dad hugs me tight and helps me calm down. Soon, I feel peaceful and happy again.
At the end of the day, my dad tucks me into bed and gives me a goodnight kiss. I feel like I’m floating on a soft pillow, dreaming sweet dreams.
No matter how I feel—happy, sad, brave, or scared—I always know one thing: I love my dad, and my dad loves me.
Wasn’t that a lovely story? Give your dad a big hug and tell him how much you love him! Thanks for joining Story Time. See you again soon!
Feelings Chart: Create a feelings chart with your child. Draw different faces showing emotions like happy, sad, brave, and angry. Ask your child to match these faces with the parts of the story where the character felt those emotions. Discuss what makes them feel the same way in their own life. This activity helps children recognize and express their emotions.
Role Play Adventure: Encourage your child to act out their favorite part of the story. They can pretend to be the brave queen, the daring rocket, or the playful pirate. Use simple props like a blanket for a magic carpet or a cardboard box for a castle. This activity enhances imagination and helps them understand the story’s themes through play.
Family Love Jar: Create a “Family Love Jar” together. Decorate a jar and fill it with small notes of appreciation and love for family members. Encourage your child to write or draw something they love about their dad or family. This activity fosters gratitude and strengthens family bonds.

Hi everyone! Welcome to Story Time. Today, I have a special book to share: “A Book of Love and Family” by Joe Whittaker.
[Applause]
I love being with my dad. I jump on his knees and hug him tight with my cheek against his neck. He hugs me back, and I feel like a little bird in a warm, comfy nest. When I’m with my dad, I feel safe. Do you feel safe with your dad?
I tuck close against his heart. Nothing frightens me—not the dark, not monsters, not even the neighbor’s dog. I feel like a courageous queen high up in my castle. I can chase away villains with a wave of my hand.
When I’m with my dad, I feel brave. One, two, three, lift off! My dad picks me up and twirls me around. He throws me in the air, and I take off like a rocket soaring high in the sky. From up here, my dad looks so small.
When I’m with my dad, I feel daring. Wobbling on my bike, I’m nervous, but that doesn’t stop me. He pushes me off and cheers, “Go, go, champion! You can do it!” My dad believes in me, so I believe in myself too. When I cross the finish line, he jumps up and down like a kangaroo.
When I’m with my dad, I feel confident. At the pool, I plunge into the water, knowing he is there to catch me. He pretends to be a boat floating and bobbing in the waves, while I’m a fierce pirate spinning against the tides.
When I’m with my dad, I feel adventurous. An ordinary day becomes extraordinary. Together, we ride on a flying carpet and travel to the moon. We can be acrobats, lion tamers, astronauts, and scuba divers—it’s our game just for the two of us.
When I’m with my dad, I feel playful. When it is hot out, we lay in the yard, feeling the warmth of the sun. All we hear is the wind blowing in and out.
When I’m with my dad, I feel calm. But sometimes, I feel excited. I hide from the “arm monster” so it doesn’t get me. I run very fast and cry, “That’s enough!” But my dad, the monster, obeys and becomes nice again.
Sometimes, when I’m with my dad, I feel angry. My heart rumbles like thunder, and I roll on the ground. The anger builds until it overflows. My screams flash like lightning, and my tears fall like rain. But my dad wraps his arms around me tight and says, “Stop, that’s enough.”
Then, tucked into my dad’s arms, the storm in my heart passes. He loosens his grip and gives me a hug. We cuddle, and my heart slows down as he gently rubs my back. I feel peaceful and happy again.
But the best hug of all is at the end of the day when dad carries me upstairs and tucks me into bed. With a kiss, he says, “Good night, my darling princess.” I feel like I’m floating away, dreaming on my feather pillow. Even while sleeping, I cannot help but hug him tight again and again.
No matter what I’m feeling—calm or angry, brave or scared—I know one thing for sure: I love my dad, and my dad loves me.
