In this lesson, students learn about how certain letters team up to create special sounds, similar to friends collaborating in games. Specifically, the lesson highlights the I-E team, which produces the long I sound in words like “tie,” and the I-G-H team, which does the same in words like “tight.” By understanding these letter combinations, students can improve their reading skills and recognize how letters work together to form sounds.
  1. What happens when the letters I and E work together?
  2. Can you think of a word that has the letters I, G, and H in it?
  3. How is teamwork between letters like teamwork between friends?

Learning About Teamwork in Letters

Hey there! Today, we’re going to learn something fun about letters. Just like how friends team up to play games, some letters team up to make special sounds. Let’s dive in and see how this works!

The I-E Team

First, let’s talk about the letters I and E. When these two letters come together, they make the long I sound, which sounds like “I” in the word “tie.” It’s like saying “tuh-I” to sound out the word “tie.” Pretty cool, right?

The I-G-H Team

Next, we have the letters I, G, and H teaming up. Together, they also make the long I sound, just like in the word “tight.” You can sound it out as “tuh-I-tuh” to say “tight.” So, whenever you see I-G-H, remember they work together to make that I sound!

Just like Reya and her friend teaming up to play soccer, letters can team up to make new sounds. Isn’t it fun to see how letters work together?

Now that you know about these letter teams, you can spot them in words and sound them out easily. Keep practicing, and you’ll become a reading pro in no time!

  • Can you think of other words where letters team up to make a special sound, like the I-E or I-G-H teams? What are some of your favorite words that have these letter teams?
  • Have you ever teamed up with a friend to do something fun or solve a problem? How did working together help you achieve your goal?
  • Why do you think letters need to team up to make different sounds? How is this similar to how people work together in teams?
  1. Letter Team Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your home or classroom to find words that have the I-E or I-G-H letter teams. Look in books, magazines, or even on food packages. Write down the words you find and practice saying them out loud. Can you find at least five words for each letter team?

  2. Make Your Own Word Cards: Create flashcards with words that include the I-E and I-G-H teams. On one side of the card, write the word, and on the other side, draw a picture that represents the word. Use these cards to play a matching game with a friend or family member. See who can match the most words with their pictures!

  3. Teamwork in Sounds: Think about other letter teams you know that make special sounds, like “sh” in “ship” or “ch” in “chop.” Can you come up with a list of other letter teams and the sounds they make? Try to use these sounds to create silly sentences or short stories. Share your creations with your class or family!
