Helping Our Furry Friends

Welcome to a fun adventure with Xavier and his friends! Today, we’re going to learn how to help a doggy with a sore paw. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Oh No, a Sore Paw!

One day, Xavier and his friends met a dog with a sore paw. The dog couldn’t play because his paw hurt. Oh no, that’s so sad! But don’t worry, Xavier and his friends are here to help.

Learning from Florence Nightingale

Do you know who Florence Nightingale is? She was a very smart lady who knew a lot about helping sick people. Xavier’s friend wanted to check her books to learn how to help the dog. Helping a hurt doggy is very important!

Keeping the Dog Safe

The friends learned that the dog needed to stay warm and rest. Just like when people have the flu, it’s important to take care of them so they can get better.

Finding the Right Book

Xavier and his friends went to the library to find a special book. The book said that when you put bandages on a sore paw, they must be very clean. Clean bandages help the paw heal faster!

How to Clean Bandages

Do you know how to clean bandages? You can put them in boiling water to make them super clean. Xavier’s friends asked for help to do this safely. It’s always good to ask an adult for help with hot water!

Helping the Dog Feel Better

With clean bandages, the friends gently wrapped the dog’s paw. They promised to change the bandage every day and clean the paw gently. The dog felt much better, and everyone was happy!

Learning is Fun!

Wow, who knew helping a dog could teach us so much? Keeping bandages clean is very important, and now you know how to help too!

Watch More Adventures!

If you want to see more fun stories, you can watch Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum on the PBS Kids video app. Have fun learning and exploring!

  • Have you ever helped an animal or a pet that was hurt or needed care? What did you do to help them feel better?
  • Why do you think it’s important to keep bandages clean when helping someone or an animal with an injury?
  • If you could learn from someone famous like Florence Nightingale, who would you choose and what would you like to learn from them?
  1. Bandage Practice: Gather some clean cloth or paper towels and practice wrapping them around a toy’s “sore paw” or leg. Pretend the toy is a dog that needs help. Remember to be gentle and careful, just like Xavier and his friends. Ask an adult to help you make sure the bandage is snug but not too tight. How does it feel to help your toy feel better?

  2. Florence Nightingale’s Helpers: Pretend you are a helper like Florence Nightingale. Use a small notebook to draw or write about how you would help a sick animal or person. What would you do to make them feel better? Share your ideas with a friend or family member and ask them what they would do.

  3. Observation Walk: Go on a short walk with an adult and look for animals in your neighborhood. Do you see any dogs, cats, or birds? Imagine how you would help them if they were hurt. What would you need to do first? Talk about your ideas with the adult and think about how you can be a good helper to animals around you.

Here’s a sneak peek of the brand new show *Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum* on PBS Kids.

Hello, pup! Are you okay? Sorry, Flowey, you can’t play today. He’s had a sore paw for a few days now. Oh, poor dog! That’s so sad. Do you know anything about sore paws, Florence Nightingale? I think so, but I want to check my books at home first. Great! We can work on my hiccuping problem later. Are you sure you don’t mind? Oh yeah, helping a hurt doggy is super important business. Don’t worry, we’ll be back as soon as we know the best way to help you.

Hey, what is that? They’re sick, and it’s contagious! That means it can spread to others.

[Music]

But only other dogs. I’m keeping them warm and rested. I learned that from a book about helping people with the flu. I want to help others as best I can. There you go, Lady Knight! Is that what I think it is? Yes, my pet! I nursed him back to health when he was just a baby. Hmm, now he lives in my room as my faithful nurse assistant. I’ve taught him everything he knows, or at least how to find the bits of cheese I’ve hidden.

Oh, that is so cute! Look at his little face! Okay, that is pretty cute. And just like my little mouse, we must nurse my dog friend back to health, but I can’t find my book. Hey, let’s go check my father’s library.

Here it is! When putting bandages on a patient, they must be sanitized and changed often. Sanitized means we have to clean them very well. How do we do that? Oh, I remember reading that bandages can be sanitized by putting them in boiling water. We’ll need more bandages, and I’ll ask my mother to help with the boiling water part. Let’s go!

We’ll get the bandages.

[Music]

Here you go! He’s going to need a new one put on every day, and don’t forget to gently clean his paw before you put it on. I will, and thank you all of you! There you go, pup! All done!

Feel better?

Yes, it worked! Oh, I had no idea it was so important to keep bandages clean.

Me neither!
