Yellowstone National Park – Virtual Field Trip

Welcome to our exciting virtual field trip to the amazing Yellowstone National Park! Did you know that Yellowstone is the very first national park in the whole world? It was created by the U.S. Congress way back in 1872. This huge park is spread across three states: Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and it covers nearly 9,000 square kilometers of stunning natural beauty.

Wildlife Wonders

Yellowstone is like a big home for many different kinds of animals. You can find grizzly bears, elk, bison, wolves, and coyotes roaming around. There are also more than 300 types of birds that visit the park each year. The park has all sorts of places where these animals live, like grasslands, forests, rivers, and lakes. In the water, you might spot fish like trout, grayling, and salmon swimming around.

Old Faithful Geyser

One of the coolest things to see in Yellowstone is the Old Faithful Geyser. This geyser is famous because it erupts about 80 times a day, shooting water up to 240 feet high! It’s called “Old Faithful” because it’s very predictable, meaning you can count on it to erupt at certain times, making it a must-see for visitors.

Artist Point

Another awesome spot in Yellowstone is Artist Point. It’s close to Old Faithful and offers breathtaking views of the Lower and Upper Falls, as well as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. If you ever get the chance to visit Yellowstone in person, make sure to check out this incredible natural wonder!

That’s all for our virtual field trip today. We hope you enjoyed learning about Yellowstone National Park. See you on our next adventure! Bye!

  • What animal would you be most excited to see if you visited Yellowstone National Park, and why?
  • Have you ever seen a geyser or something similar to Old Faithful in real life or on TV? What did you think about it?
  • If you could explore any part of Yellowstone, like the forests, rivers, or Artist Point, which would you choose and what would you hope to find there?
  1. Animal Observation Journal: Start your own wildlife observation journal! Next time you visit a park or your backyard, try to spot different animals or birds. Draw pictures of them and write down what you notice about their behavior. How do they move? What sounds do they make? Compare your findings with the animals found in Yellowstone. Can you find any similarities or differences?

  2. Geyser Experiment: Create your own mini geyser at home! With the help of an adult, use a bottle of soda and some mints (like Mentos). Carefully drop the mints into the soda and watch what happens. Discuss why you think the soda erupts like a geyser. How is this similar to the Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone?

  3. Artistic Adventure: Imagine you are at Artist Point in Yellowstone. Use crayons, colored pencils, or paints to create your own masterpiece of the view you might see there. Think about the colors and shapes you would see in the landscape. Share your artwork with your family and explain why Yellowstone is such a special place.
