Discussion Questions

  • What is your favorite treat from a vending machine, and why do you like it so much? Have you ever tried something new from a vending machine that you really enjoyed?
  • Imagine you could create your own vending machine. What kinds of snacks or drinks would you put inside, and how would you make it fun for everyone to use?
  • Have you ever helped someone, like putting out a small fire or helping a friend cross the street safely? How did it make you feel to help others?

Lesson Activities

  1. Vending Machine Role Play: Set up a pretend vending machine in the classroom using a cardboard box. Fill it with play food items like toy bread, drinks, and ice cream. Let the children take turns being the customer and the vending machine operator. Encourage them to use play money to “buy” items and practice counting and making choices. Ask them questions like, “What would you choose if you were really hungry?” or “Which drink would be best on a hot day?”

  2. Jam Taste Test: Bring in small samples of different jams like strawberry, blueberry, and pineapple. Let the children taste each one on a small piece of bread. After tasting, have a discussion about which flavor they liked best and why. Ask them to describe the taste and texture. You can also ask, “What other foods do you think would taste good with jam?”

  3. Counting and Dancing Donuts: Create paper cutouts of donuts and place them in a circle. As you play music, have the children dance around the donuts. When the music stops, ask them to count how many donuts are left if one “falls” into the chocolate pot. This activity helps with counting skills and understanding subtraction in a fun way. Ask, “How many donuts do we have now?” and “What happens if another donut falls in?”
