  3. What did Flynn learn about using his wheels and floats for different kinds of landings?

Race Day Adventure

It was a bright and exciting day for the Zerbies. They were ready for a fun race down the hill. But things didn’t go as planned!

The Muddy Start

Axel and Lily were covered in mud and missing a tire. They had a funny story to tell. It all started when Axel bumped a rock at the top of a hill, and it rolled down. They thought it would be fun to roll more things down the hill.

The Rolling Log

They found a big log and pushed it down the hill. Lily chased it super fast but ended up flipping over and landing upside down in the leaves. That’s when they had a great idea about using their tires to roll down the hill.

The Tire Race

Axel and Lily decided to take off their tires and roll them down the hill. They thought it would be fun to see which tire would go the farthest. But they needed a third tire, so they called their friend Rex to join them.

Ready, Set, Roll!

With a small tire, a medium tire, and a large tire, they were ready to race. They rolled their tires down the hill, and guess what? Rex’s big tire went the farthest, all the way to a giant mud puddle!

Stuck in the Mud

Rex went to get his tire out of the mud but got stuck himself. The Zerbies tried to help, but with only three tires each, it was tricky. They needed more help, so they went to find Zach.

Getting Rex Out

With Zach’s help, they finally got Rex out of the mud. It was a messy adventure, but everyone was happy in the end. They all headed back to Zerby Town, ready for more fun!

Flynn’s New Wheels

Meanwhile, Flynn the float plane was excited to try out his new wheels at Zerby Town Airport. He needed wheels to land on the runway, but he also needed his floats to land on water.

Finding a Solution

Flynn landed on the lake and met his friends. They attached the wheels to Flynn so he could try the runway. But Flynn realized he couldn’t use the wheels in the water.

Taxiing to the Runway

Flynn learned that he could “taxi” on the ground with his wheels. He followed a trail back to the airport, where he could finally try the runway. It was perfect!

Happy Landings

Flynn loved his new wheels and the runway. Now he could take off and land on land or water. The Zerbies helped him put his floats back by the water, ready for his next adventure.

Moving the Tower

Elsewhere, Strut had built a tall tower in the middle of a trail. Zach and Lily wanted to help move it without breaking it.

Thinking It Through

They thought about pushing or pulling the tower, but both ideas seemed risky. They needed a plan that would work on the first try.

The Perfect Plan

Finally, they came up with a clever idea. They would use a rope to gently tip the tower over and move it carefully. With teamwork and careful thinking, they succeeded!

The Zerbies learned that with a little creativity and teamwork, they could solve any problem. What a fun and adventurous day it was!

  1. Have you ever tried to roll something down a hill like Axel and Lily did with their tires? What happened, and how did it make you feel?
  2. Flynn needed both wheels and floats to land on different surfaces. Can you think of other things that need to change or adapt to work in different places or situations?
  3. The Zerbies used teamwork to solve their problems. Can you think of a time when you worked with friends or family to solve a problem or complete a task? What did you do, and how did it turn out?
  1. Rolling Experiment: Gather three different objects from around your home or classroom, such as a small ball, a medium-sized toy car, and a large book. Find a gentle slope or ramp and roll each object down. Observe which object rolls the farthest and discuss why you think that happened. Was it the size, shape, or weight that made a difference? Try changing the surface of the ramp to see if it affects the results.

  2. Build Your Own Tower: Using blocks or any stackable items, build a tower. Once your tower is built, think about how you could move it without knocking it over. Try using a piece of string or a ruler to gently nudge it. Work with a friend to see if you can move it together. Discuss what worked and what didn’t, and how teamwork helped in moving the tower.

  3. Design a Vehicle: Draw a picture of a vehicle that can travel on both land and water, just like Flynn the float plane. Think about what features it would need to have, such as wheels for the land and floats for the water. Share your design with the class and explain how your vehicle would work. What challenges might it face, and how would you solve them?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any inappropriate language or content while maintaining the essence of the conversation:

[Music] Race day! [Music]

Don’t make me laugh; I can’t drive well. Look at you, there’s mud everywhere! [Music]

Hi Zach, you’re just the derby we’re looking for! Hi Lily, Axel, you’re both covered in mud and missing a tire. I know we have the best story to tell you about what happened.

Okay, so there I was, laying upside down in the leaves, and I looked up at my tire and then I had an idea.

Hey, we could use our tires! Wait, wait, wait, why were you upside down?

Oh, because of the log.

The log? I think maybe you started in the middle of the story.

Oh yeah, you’re right. I’ll try again from the beginning of the story.

So we were at the top of this hill, and Axel accidentally bumped a rock, and it started rolling down the hill. It went pretty far.

Yeah, so I said, “Let’s bump more things and then chase them to see how far they go.” So we looked around for something else to roll, and I found a log that rolled really well.

That sounds fun!

So we got it to the top of the hill and pushed it down. It really started rolling, and Lily took off after it.

Yeah, but then I skidded out and rolled off the trail and landed on my roof.

Oh, so that’s how you ended up upside down!

Yeah, so then Rex took off his tire so we could have three.

Wait, Rex was with you this whole time?

Oh no, no, no, Rex came later.

Oh, when you were upside down?

No, no, it was after that.

Yeah, because we realized his tire was perfect.

Oh, okay. Perfect for what?

Oh yeah, we forgot that part. Um, I think our story’s a little mixed up. We need to tell it in the right order, Axel, otherwise it won’t make any sense.

Right, okay, we’ll try again, Zach.

Well, it’s okay. I think I know the beginning. You Zerbies are on top of the hill rolling stuff down, and then that log really got rolling, and then Lily chased it all the way down like super fast.

Yeah, so fast that I spun out, flipped, and landed in the leaves. That’s when I looked at my tires and realized tires are awesome for rolling! I got Lily to flip back over, and that’s when she told me her idea.

I said, “I bet if we pushed my tire from the top of the hill, it would go super far.”

Okay, so that’s the beginning of the story. Does that make sense to you, Zach?

Yeah, it does so far, but how did you lose your tire, Axel?

Well, that’s the middle of the story. I said, “Let’s both take off our tires and roll them. Then we have a small tire and a larger tire, and we can compare them.”

I get it!

Right, so we were on top of the hill with our tires. We had a big tire and a small tire, but then I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had a third tire?”

Yeah, at first I didn’t understand why we needed another tire.

Right, but then I said, “We have different size tires, so let’s get a third tire of another size.”

And I said, “What about Rex’s tire? Then we could have a small tire, a medium tire, and a large tire.”

Oh, so that’s where Rex comes in!

Well, first we radioed Rex, and he drove over to join us.

Okay, great! Now I know the beginning of the story and the middle of the story. I can’t wait to hear how it ends! So whose tire went the farthest?

Oh, you’re gonna have to wait and see!

Okay, um, so there we are on top of the hill with me and my little tire, Lily with her bigger tire, and Rex with his giant tire. Ready, set, turbo! And then we rolled our tires.

Okay, let me guess, let me guess! You have a small tire, a medium tire, and a large tire. I think Axel’s tire went the farthest because it’s the smallest and the lightest. Is that what happened?

Nope! My tire was the first tire to slow down. You see, it fell over, and Lily and Rex’s kept going.

Ah, so whose tire won?

Well, I thought my tire was gonna win, but mine rolled into a bunch of rocks, and Rex’s just kept going and going.

Wow, so the biggest, heaviest tire went the farthest!

Yep, it went all the way to the giant mud puddle and then it fell over like sploosh!

And that’s why you’re covered in mud! What a great ending to this story!

Well, that’s not the end.

It’s not?

No, see Rex went to get his tire out of the mud, but he got stuck.

Uh-oh, I’m stuck!

And we tried to push him out, but each of us only had three tires.

And that’s how he got muddy, and that’s the end of the story.

But wait, the camp at the end! How did you get Rex out of the mud?

We didn’t!

What?!

Yeah, he’s still stuck in the mud. That’s why we came to get you!

But that should have been at the beginning of the story!

Oh, okay, let’s try again and start at the very beginning.

So we came to get you!

No, because Rex is stuck in the mud! The reason why was because Lily and I weren’t going to happen.

Yeah, and we thought—

No, no, no, no! Zerby Derby’s no need to try again. I got the whole story now! We need to go get Rex out!

Oh yeah, okay, come on, let’s go!

Yeah, can you get our tires out of the bush for us? We couldn’t get them because we only have three wheels.

I was wondering why you didn’t put your tires back on!

Oh, I’m stuck in the mud, but that’s okay. I can’t get out, but we’ll find a way!

Rex, are you all right?

Oh, I’m okay! The mud feels kind of good actually, but I wouldn’t mind getting out now.

Sorry we took so long, Rex. Zach had to help us get our tires out of the bush so we could all help you.

Yeah, and we had to tell our story, but now we can get you out! Come on, Zerbies!

Okay, Lily, you push Rex, and I’ll supervise. Ready, set, go!

Okay, I’m moving!

Yeah, it’s working! [Applause]

Thanks, Zerbies!

No problem, Brad! That was funny!

Okay, everybody back to Zerby Town! Let’s go!

Oh yeah, yeah, come on, let’s go!

Okay, uh, yeah, let’s go!

Oh wait a minute, I don’t have my tire on yet!

You’re still in the mud!

Uh, Zerbies, I gotta get my tire!

Oh, here he comes! Landing! [Music]

Hey Flynn, that was great! I love watching you land!

I love being able to land at the airport! Remember the first time I got my wheels?

Yeah, I remember! The construction derbies had just finished building the airport, and Rex was showing it to me!

Well, here it is, Zerby Town Airport!

Wow, look at it! What do you think, Chase?

I love it! I’ve got a hangar and my own helipad because I’m a helicopter!

Oh yeah, look at this! This is the airport control tower, right?

Yup, that’s right!

Wow! And what about Flynn? He’s in Air Derby; does he get anything?

Yeah, well, he’s a plane, and planes need a runway to take off and land, so we built a runway for him!

Wow, that’s amazing! Does Flynn like it?

He hasn’t seen it yet, but here he comes now!

Wow, Zerbies! That’s a mighty fine looking airport you’ve built!

Yeah, we even have a runway for you to land and take off from, Flynn!

Hi Flynn, it’s Zach! Come and land on your runway!

Hi Zach! Will do! Coming in for a landing! Approaching runway!

Oh wait a minute, I can’t land on the runway!

Why not?

Well, because I have floats; I’m a float plane, see?

Oh yeah, floats are only for landing on the water!

Ah, we already thought of that! Mika made you some wheels!

Oh, good thinking, Rex!

Oh, that’s really nice of you, Rex, but how do I put the wheels on from up here? I’d have to land to put them on, but I can’t land without them!

Huh, never thought of that!

That’s okay! We are Zerbies! We’ll just try again until we come up with a solution!

Uh, Flynn, why don’t you land on the lake and we’ll meet you there?

Roger that! See you there!

Roger, I’m Zach! Doesn’t he know I’m Zach? I think it’s a radio thing!

Ah, there it is, Zerby Town Lake! The perfect place for a float plane like me to land! Coming in for a landing!

Perfect!

Oh, I missed your landing, Flynn! I love watching you land!

Well, that’s okay! You can see me take off and land from the airport as soon as I get my wheels on!

Yeah, come on Rex, let’s go drop those wheels off!

Dumping wheels right now!

All we have to do is attach them!

Yeah, yeah!

You know how to do that, right?

Oh yeah!

Wow, they look great! They feel great! Now I can land on the runway! See you there, Zerbies!

Oh wait a minute, I slang!

Oh yeah, you can’t use your wheels in the water, Flynn!

Oh yeah, you’re right! I need my floats to take off from the water!

Huh, wheels are for taking off on land! We just need to try again!

Uh, what should we do?

Oh well, that’s easy! You just need to take off from the land here and then fly back to the airport!

Well, I need a long stretch of very flat ground to get going fast enough!

Well, let’s look for a good spot!

Okay!

Yeah, look over here! I’ll look over here!

Let’s see, uh, oh, I don’t know, Flynn! There’s a lot of pretty tall grass over here!

No, definitely not! Not enough room to take off!

Mm-hmm!

Oh, I found a rock! It’s flat, but I don’t think it’s big enough!

Yeah, I’m not sure about the ground here, Flynn!

Yeah, I need more room!

Hey Flynn, you’re driving!

I’m not driving; I’m taxiing!

Huh? You took a taxi?

No, taxiing’s what you call it when a plane drives on the ground! I can taxi on these wheels pretty well!

Well, you’re gonna have to taxi back over because you definitely can’t take off over this way!

I don’t know, maybe there’s something over here! Come on, let’s look!

Wait for me!

There aren’t any open spots, Flynn!

Hey, where’s that trail go?

What trail?

That trail there!

Oh, it goes back to the airport!

Yeah, that’s how we got here!

Well, maybe instead of trying to take off around here, I can taxi back to the airport!

You’re gonna take a taxi?

No, that’s what planes call driving on the ground!

Oh!

All right, let’s give it a try! Come on, come on, let’s do it!

Ready, Flynn?

Okay, yeah, here I go!

Okay, careful! Keep backing up!

Oh, is it much farther?

Zerbies, not far now! Just around this corner!

Yeah, come on, Flynn! Around here!

Uh-oh, Zerbies, what’s wrong?

I can’t get through here! There’s too much grass on the trail!

Huh, the trail is wide open!

Not for me! Look how big my wingspan is! I can’t fit down that trail!

Oh yeah, all right! We can go around the long way! Come on, just back out!

Is there another trail?

Yeah, yeah, we could just go around this way!

Okay, good! Following you!

Okay, easy!

Okay, coming!

There, we made it!

Yeah, really? I don’t see it!

It’s just around the corner! You see, it opens right up!

This is it!

Oh wow, we made it! Ha! I’m gonna go try the runway right now!

Go Flynn!

All right, can’t wait to try out my new wheels! Ready? [Music]

How is it?

Amazing! I love this runway, and I love my new wheels! Landing!

Well, thanks Zerbies! Now I have wheels and a runway to use when I take off on land, or I can taxi myself down to the water if I want to be a float plane again!

Speaking of floats, where do you want me to put them?

By the water! I sure can’t use them up here!

Huh, I carried them up here for nothing!

Well, let’s go put them back!

Good idea! Let’s go!

I’m coming too! I want to taxi that path again!

Wait up!

I wish I could taxi!

You can drive; it’s the same thing!

No, no! I wish that I was a plane so that I could taxi all over!

But if you’re a plane, you could fly!

Oh yeah!

Yeah, I wouldn’t spend much time taxiing again!

Come on, Zach! I’m totally gonna beat you!

Oh, no way! I’m totally fastest!

Oh, then why am I ahead of you?

Uh, what? Oh yeah, well watch this! Here I come!

I’m waiting!

Oh, I hit the bushes!

What’s this?

Huh, I don’t know! It’s some sort of tower! What’s it doing here?

Oh, I built it!

Oh hi, Strut! That’s a pretty amazing tower you built!

Oh, thanks, Lily!

But it’s in the middle of the trail!

Yeah, it’ll be in the way if anyone tries to drive through here! Would it be okay if we moved it?

Why, of course! I’ve been trying to come up with a way to move it all morning, but there’s a problem!

Oh, what’s that?

Well, it’s too tall for me to lift off the ground, so I can’t move it that way!

Oh, well don’t worry, Strut! We’ll find a way! We’re Zerbies; we can solve any problem if we just try!

Well, it’s super fragile; it could fall apart really easily if we move it!

Well, don’t worry! We can be really careful!

Um, but sometimes our first solution doesn’t work!

Yeah, well that’s true, but then we just try again!

Yes, and that’s great, but if our first solution doesn’t work with my tower, then it could break!

I get it now! So we only get one chance to move the tower!

Oh, so we have to come up with a plan that will work on the first try!

Exactly! So, um, how do we do that?

Well, let’s just think about it!

That’s what we’re doing, Zach!

No, I mean let’s come up with an idea and then think it through from the start to the finish before we actually try it!

Oh, and keep my tower in one piece!

Okay, let’s think! Hmm…

Okay, what if Lily and I push the tower?

Oh, do you think that could work?

Um, would the tower break?

Well, let’s think it through! So Lily and I just carefully pushed the tower, and the tower would move along the path, and we could push it!

So yeah, and then we’d be able to push it all over, and we just push it and push it, and it’d be so easy!

Yeah, wait, Zach! What if the tower tips over when we push it?

Oh, um, do you think that might happen?

Okay, let me think again!

Uh-oh, no! My tower!

Yeah, you’re right! Pushing the tower might make it fall!

We can’t know for sure, but it could happen, so that might not be the best idea!

Well, that’s okay, Zach! Boy, am I glad we thought that idea through! It saved my tower from crashing to the ground!

So if that idea might not work, let’s try again!

Don’t you mean think again?

All right! If pushing the tower isn’t a good idea, what about pulling it?

I think it would go something like this: um, the tower would be tipped over, and I’d carefully pull it off the path, um, and because it’s already tipped over, I wouldn’t have to worry about it falling, and I could pull it!

I could pull it all over! Pulling it back and forth, easy peasy!

Hold that thought, Strut!

So how did the tower get tipped over in the first place?

Oh, um, right! Um, thinking, thinking…

Oh, I know! All I’d have to do to tip the tower over is throw my hook to the top, and then I would slowly pull it down, and the tower would tip over, and it would fall!

Right! The tower would fall very fast if I pulled it over, and then it would break!

I guess that’s not right either!

No problem, Strut! We’ll just shift gears and try again!

I do think that having the tower tipped over is a good idea, though!

Yeah, uh, hey! What if I hold on to the other side with a rope, and then I can slow the tower down when you pull on it?

Strut, that’s a good idea, Zach!

Yeah, yeah! Okay, so let me think this one through!

Okay, so there I am holding on to the rope, and Strut pulls
