In the lesson “Playing in the Snow,” Zach and Spike embark on a snowy adventure filled with fun activities like playing hide and seek, building a snow Derby, and decorating a tree with holiday lights. Through their playful experiences, they learn valuable lessons about being sneaky, using creativity, and the joy of winter activities. The lesson encourages children to embrace their imagination and enjoy the excitement of snowy days while also reminding them to stay warm afterward.
  1. What is your favorite thing to do in the snow?
  2. How can you be sneaky when you play hide and seek?
  3. What would you like to decorate with lights like Zach did with the tree?

Playing in the Snow

Hi there! Do you love snow? I sure do! It’s so much fun to play in, just like playing hide and seek. Let’s go on a snowy adventure together!

Hide and Seek in the Snow

One day, Zach and Spike decided to play hide and seek in the snow. Zach loves to hide, and Spike loves to seek. So, they were the perfect team!

Spike started counting, “One, two, three…” and Zach ran to hide. But guess what? Spike found Zach really fast! Why? Because Zach is a bright red car hiding in the white snow. Oops!

Zach tried again, but Spike found him by following his tracks in the snow. Tracks are like little footprints that show where you’ve been. Zach learned that he needs to be sneaky to hide well!

Building a Snowman

After playing hide and seek, Zach wanted to build a snowman. He rolled big snowballs to make the snowman’s body. But the snowballs were too big to lift!

Zach thought, “Hmm, what can I do with all these big snowballs?” Then he had a great idea! He made a snow Derby instead. It’s like a snowman, but even more fun because it’s a Derby!

Decorating the Big Tree

Zach saw a big tree and wondered if it gets cold in the winter. He decided to make the tree look pretty by putting holiday lights on it. He wrapped the lights around the tree and made it shine bright!

But oh no! The lights were too low at first. Zach tried again and got them higher up on the tree. Now the big tree looked magical with all the twinkling lights!

Snowy Adventures

Zach and Spike had so much fun in the snow. They learned about hiding, building, and decorating. Snowy days are full of exciting adventures!

Remember, when you play in the snow, you can make snowmen, play games, and even decorate trees. Just use your imagination and have fun!

Stay Warm and Have Fun!

Playing in the snow is chilly, so remember to warm up when you’re done. Maybe have some hot cocoa or a warm snack. Enjoy your snowy adventures!

  • Have you ever played in the snow like Zach and Spike? What games do you like to play when it snows?
  • What would you build if you had a lot of snow? Would it be a snowman, a snow fort, or something else? Why?
  • How do you think the big tree felt when Zach decorated it with lights? What would you do to make a tree look pretty in winter?
  1. Snowy Footprint Hunt: Next time it snows, go outside with a grown-up and make footprints in the snow. Then, try to follow each other’s tracks like Spike did with Zach. Can you find where your friend or family member went? This will help you understand how tracks can show where someone has been.

  2. Build Your Own Snow Creation: Just like Zach made a snow Derby, think of something fun you can build with snow. It could be a snow animal, a snow castle, or even a snow car! Use your imagination and see what you can create. Share your creation with your family and tell them the story behind it.

  3. Tree Decorating Adventure: Find a small tree or bush in your yard or at a park. With the help of an adult, decorate it with colorful ribbons or paper chains. Notice how the decorations make the tree look different and special. How does it feel to make something look beautiful?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] I love snow! Snow is my favorite right after playing hide and seek. I think they’re both my favorites. Oh, Spike, why don’t we play hide and seek in the snow?

Get out, Zach! Really? Yeah, really! Okay, one of us has to hide and the other one has to seek. I like seeking! Oh, that’s perfect! I like hiding, so I’ll tell you. Yeah, yeah, you count.

Okay, one, two, three…

Okay, ready or not, here I come! Huh, found you! What? That was fast! I thought my hiding spot was perfect. Uh, you’re a red car hiding in the middle of a white snowfield, Zach. It’s pretty easy to see you.

Oh, okay, well let me try again.

Okay, this looks like a good spot. You count, and I will hide again.

Okay, one, two…

He always starts counting right away. He’ll never find me here.

Ready or not, here I come! Ha! Found you! What? How did you find me so easily? Your tracks, Zach!

Oh yeah, I leave tracks in the snow. Okay, one more time.

Okay, one…

Okay, try following these tracks.

[Music]

Ready or not, here I come! Huh, not over here…

I give up, Zach! Come on, I’m right here! Oh, that was some good hiding, Zach! I know I made a lot of trails, so you didn’t know which way I went, and then I covered myself in snow so you couldn’t see my red against the white. You’re a great hider!

Let’s go! Oh, wait, wait, I’m stuck!

Oh, you’re stuck? Do you want to play again? Yeah, but first I want to go warm up in Derby Town. Hiding in the snow is cold!

Oh yeah!

[Music]

Wow, it really snowed last night! The snow is pretty deep, but I can get through it. I’m Zach’s Derby!

Oh, getting deeper! Careful!

I can still do it! Hey, look, there’s another trail! Another Derby must have come this way.

Oh, they went all the way along here. I wonder who it is?

Always Spike! Hi, Spike! Bye, Zach! This is deep snow, huh?

Yeah, it’s fun! I was trying to go all the way to the sand pit, but I don’t think I’m gonna make it. The snow is too deep.

We should turn around.

No, we just need to try again!

Oh, okay! How?

Hmm, maybe if I got my snowplow, I could plow it!

Plow it? Yeah, you know, move it out of the way! I’ll be right back!

Okay, let’s try it out!

Whoa, it pushes the snow!

Okay, I got my snowplow! Wow, do you think it’ll work in this deep snow?

Well, it’s a snowplow! I think it should!

Alright, go ahead, Zach!

Okay!

[Music]

What’s wrong, Zach?

I can’t push it any further!

Maybe you should try pushing it to the side.

Oh, okay, I’ll try!

Try again and push it to the side!

Oh yeah, okay, I’ll get out of your way!

Okay, uh… hey, it works! If I push this snow to the side, I can get it out of the way so it doesn’t get too heavy!

Push this to the side, and then… how much farther to the sand pit?

You see those trees?

Yeah, that’s halfway!

Whoa, I can make it!

This is gonna be the best snowman ever! Come on!

I did it! I have two snowballs, and now let’s see… I need to make a snowman, so I need to get one of these on top of the other one.

Okay, here we go!

[Music]

I don’t know if I can do this, but that’s okay! I’ll just try again!

I just need a way to lift it, like, uh… oh! Or a rope!

Lifting the snowball, go!

[Music]

Maybe I just need a smaller snowball. This snowball looks pretty small!

Oh, it’s getting bigger! I better get it back there soon!

[Music]

Hey, they’re the same size! I couldn’t lift the last one; I won’t be able to lift this one!

Okay, this one is smaller!

Hey, this is the same size as well! What am I gonna do with all these snowballs that are all big?

I’ll never build a snowman at this rate!

Hmm, what can I build with four same-sized snowballs? They’re kind of like big tires!

Oh, hey, I know what to do!

Put the snow… the sculpting here, a little sculpting here, over there… very nice! Mr. Snowball goes right here!

Finished! A snow Derby!

No lifting of heavy snowballs, and snow Derbies are more fun than snowmen because they’re Derbies!

You went there, snow Derby! I’m gonna get Lily so she can see you!

Maybe that’s a snow jacket, and we can make a snow look!

Oh, oh, and it’s snowing!

It’s a cold Derby day out here today!

Hi, big tree! Are you liking the wintertime?

I wonder if trees get cold in the winter.

I guess not! Still, I wonder if there’s something I can do for my favorite big tree.

Oh, I know! I can give them holiday lights!

That’s wintery! Don’t worry, big tree! I’ll be right back!

These holiday lights are gonna make Mr. Big Tree look terrific!

Now to just turn them on…

Let’s see how they look!

Well, that doesn’t look good! I guess having them all bunched up on the ground like that isn’t the best place for them.

Maybe I could string them out a bit and then wrap them around Mr. Tree!

Okay, holiday lights attached to my bumper and around… wrapping around Mr. Big Tree!

Going around… this is good! Almost done!

[Music]

There we go! Let’s see how they look!

They still don’t look good; they’re too low!

I need to try again and get the lights higher!

[Music]

There we go! Now one end of the lights is on the high branch, and now I wrap around Mr. Big Tree again!

Around Big Tree!

Keeping the lights high on your tree!

Oh, better tighten it again!

Here we go! Wrapping lights around the tree, wrapping lights carefully… almost done!

Here, here, that’s it!

Look at that! The lights are wrapped all the way around the tree! I can’t wait to show Lily!

I better turn them off to save their batteries!

Uh-oh, the switch is on that end! I can’t get to that!

Okay, we’ll just have to bring Strut and Lily back, and then we can look at Mr. Tree, and Strut can turn the lights off afterwards if he can reach!

[Music]

Now I just moved his sticky fan!

Whoa, I fell!

[Music]

Are we cutting?

Oh yeah!

Okay, now you just move this again!

I did it!

Yeah!

Let me help you!

Okay!

[Applause]

How is it this stuck?

[Music]

Oh, I hit the tree!

Okay, take two!

Watch this! Right around the tree without hitting it!

Ready? No turns!

Don’t care!

I’m an amazing driver!

Oh, never mind!

I have finished my snowman! Now to get it back to Derby Town!

Come on, snowman!

Ah, come on, snowman!

It’s not again!

Now to get the snowman… no, don’t fall over!

Careful!

Now to get a bit… I need a bigger snowman!

I have finished my snowman!

[Music]
