share us on:

In today’s lesson, we embarked on an exciting adventure to build a bridge for our toy cars, the Zerbies, to cross from one rock to another. We learned the importance of finding the right materials, overcoming obstacles like muddy terrain, and the value of perseverance and teamwork, as we adjusted our plans and kept trying until we succeeded. Ultimately, the lesson emphasized that learning can be fun, and making mistakes is a part of the journey!
  1. What do we need to make our bridge for the Zerbies?
  2. Why is it important to keep trying when something doesn’t work?
  3. How can we help Axel when he gets stuck in the mud?

Let’s Build a Bridge!

Hi, friends! Today, we’re going to build a bridge so our toy cars, called Zerbies, can drive from one rock to another. Isn’t that exciting?

Finding the Right Sticks

First, we need some sticks to make the bridge. But oh no! The bridge is too narrow, which means it’s too small for the Zerbies to cross safely. We need more sticks, and they all have to be the same size!

Let’s go find some sticks! Look, here’s a stick! Is it the right size? Yes, it is! Let’s find more sticks just like this one.

Oops, Too Short!

We found lots of sticks, but uh-oh, they are too short! They need to be longer to fit across the rocks. Let’s go find longer sticks. We can do it!

Carrying the Long Stick

Look, there’s a really long stick! It’s perfect for our bridge. Lily, one of the Zerbies, is super strong and can carry it all by herself. Go, Lily!

Getting Stuck in the Mud

While building, one of the Zerbies, Axel, gets stuck in the mud. Mud is sticky and hard to drive through, but it’s okay! We just need to try again and find a way to help Axel.

Using Signs to Help

We need signs to show the Zerbies which way to go. But oh no, there are too many signs, and it’s confusing! Let’s fix the signs so the Zerbies know the right way to go.

Trying Again and Again

Sometimes, things don’t work the first time, and that’s okay! We just need to keep trying until we get it right. Just like when we try to make the perfect turn or climb a hill, practice makes us better!

Having Fun While Learning

Even when things don’t go as planned, it’s important to have fun and keep trying. The Zerbies love to try new things and learn from their mistakes. Let’s be like the Zerbies and keep learning and having fun!

Thanks for joining us on this adventure. Remember, trying again and again is the Zerby way!

  • What do you think makes a good bridge for the Zerbies? Can you think of other things we use bridges for in real life?
  • Have you ever tried to build something and it didn’t work the first time? What did you do to fix it, and how did it feel when you finally got it right?
  • Why do you think it’s important to keep trying even when things don’t go as planned? Can you share a time when you had fun learning something new?
  1. Stick Hunt Adventure: Go on a mini adventure in your backyard or a nearby park to find sticks. Try to find sticks of different lengths and compare them. Which ones are too short, too long, or just right for building a bridge? Use a ruler or a measuring tape to measure the sticks and see if you can find sticks that are the same size. This will help you understand why the Zerbies needed sticks of the right size for their bridge!

  2. Build Your Own Bridge: Using blocks, LEGO, or other building materials, try to build a bridge for your toy cars at home. Experiment with different sizes and shapes of materials to see which ones work best. Can your toy cars cross safely? If not, what changes can you make to improve your bridge? This activity will help you think like the Zerbies and learn from trying different solutions.

  3. Obstacle Course Challenge: Create a simple obstacle course for your toy cars using household items like books, boxes, or pillows. Pretend that your toy cars are Zerbies and guide them through the course. If they get stuck, just like Axel did in the mud, think of ways to help them get through. This will teach you about problem-solving and the importance of trying again when things don’t work the first time.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any unnecessary repetition and maintaining clarity:

[Music]

Hi, Zerbies! We’re building a bridge now so Zerbies can cross from one rock to another while others drive underneath.

Wow, can I try?

It’s not finished, Zach. It’s too narrow.

Oh, I think you need some more sticks.

That bridge is too narrow; that’s what they were trying to say, Zach.

Oh, it was?

Come on, we have to stop construction until we can get more sticks of the right length.

Oh, you need more sticks? We could get sticks!

Alright, we need more sticks that will fit between these rocks.

Yes, they should all be the same size.

Okay, we’ll come back with more sticks in no time. Come on, Lily!

And then I fell off the bridge.

Yeah, I saw that!

It was funny.

Hey, here’s a stick!

Oh yeah, I think that’s the right size. Let’s find some more the same size as this one.

Okay, ready, set…

Let’s see…

Here’s a stick! I found one! Lily, bring it back!

Okay, and here—same size, same size!

Oh, I see one! Is it the same size?

Yep!

Maybe one more each?

That sounds good, and then we’ll take them back.

Okay, we got more sticks and made sure they were all the same length.

Uh-oh, what?

I think those sticks are too short.

What? No, they’re not! They’re the perfect size! Here, I’ll show you.

Yeah, okay, just let me turn around…

See? They fit right in between!

No, we need longer sticks. They have to sit on top of that rock and stretch all the way across to sit on top of that rock.

Yeah, we need sticks that are at least this long.

Oh, let me try mine; I think mine might be a little bit long.

No, we made them all the same size, remember?

Oh yeah, sorry, Zerbies. Those sticks are just too short. Looks like we have to try again, Lily.

Yeah, we’ll just get longer sticks.

Okay, we’re gonna go get longer sticks.

Good luck, Zerbies!

Hey, Zach, are you coming?

Yeah, carry me, Lily!

Okay, come on, it’s this way.

Oh, I saw a really long stick around here!

Really? I don’t see it.

Oh, here it is! Take a look at this one, Zach!

Whoa, that is definitely longer! How are we gonna get it back to Derbytown?

I can carry it!

Really? I don’t know, Lily. Are you sure you don’t need help?

Nope, I can do it all by myself! Watch!

Wow, Lily, you’re doing it!

I can carry it all the way back to Zerbytown!

Okay, let me know if you need any help.

No, I don’t need help; I’m super strong!

Can you catch him and hold him in place?

I can sure try!

Come this way, past Strut.

Alright, here we go! One, two, three—drive over the hook, Axel!

Okay, here I come!

Ah, I missed it! It didn’t work!

Try again!

One more time, Axel!

Okay, I’m gonna go really this time!

Hey, wait a minute, he’s not stopping!

Yes, he’s really pulling!

Can you see what’s wrong, Mika?

No, I can’t; he’s spinning around too much.

Don’t worry, Axel, we’ll try again!

We need to wait for Axel to stop moving, even if his wheels are spinning.

What about that gravel?

The gravel?

Yeah, maybe he’ll get stuck in it!

Oh, good idea!

What are we doing?

I’m going to unhook you, and you’re going to drive into that gravel.

We just need to try again!

What should we do?

Well, getting him stuck so his wheels spin is a good plan. Maybe we should try something else.

Like what?

How about that pile of dirt?

Oh, that’s a good idea! Head for the pile of dirt!

You should get stuck if you hit it!

Okay, here we go!

Huh, that didn’t work either.

No, it didn’t.

We just need to try again!

Well, I hope you come up with something soon.

I’m going over this way.

It’s no good; he’s just too fast!

I know! What are we gonna do?

I’m not sure yet, but we just gotta keep trying until we can think of something.

Uh-oh, look at this! It’s a patch of mud!

Mud is hard to drive through!

Oh yeah, it is hard to drive through—much harder than gravel or dirt!

Let’s see if we can get him to drive through this mud pit!

I know I’ve been stuck in mud plenty of times!

Okay, Axel!

What am I doing?

Okay, you gotta go into the mud pit!

What was that?

Into the mud! You gotta go into the mud pit! Turn left!

Okay, here I go!

Hey, it’s working!

Ah, stop moving!

My wheels are still spinning; I think I might come out any second!

Okay, let me have a look.

Oh, I see the problem!

Oh, you do? Can you fix it?

Hold on, let me just see if I can grab it.

Oh, hurry! I think it might be coming out of the box!

Hold on… and there!

Hey, my wheel stopped spinning!

Well, what was it?

It was a stick!

A stick? I don’t get it!

It was stuck in your undercarriage! You must have jammed down your accelerator; that’s why you couldn’t stop!

Oh, that must have come from the pile of sticks I got stuck on!

Ready?

I’m always ready!

No, I mean like ready, set, turbo!

Here we go!

Are you getting in?

It’s really slippery!

Can you go over here?

Watch this!

Here on this side!

I don’t know; it doesn’t work out.

Yeah, go, Zerby!

I’m gonna go over this way!

Okay, here we go!

Hey, these rocks are falling on you!

He’s up watching me!

There are rocks!

Hello!

Here we go!

There might be rocks falling on Axel!

Watch out for falling rocks!

Oh, sorry!

Yeah, there’s rocks all over the place!

Sorry about that, Axel!

Oh, come on, let’s dig him out!

Yeah, okay, let’s dig him out!

I’m just gonna take you out like this, Axel.

Okay, I’m gonna use my wheels and then I’m gonna turn them really fast like that!

Yeah, this is gonna go away!

Okay, yeah, it’s working!

I don’t know; I can’t see!

There!

Oh, okay, it’s all cleared away!

Sorry about that, Axel!

Oh, no problem, Zach!

I think we just need to try again!

But how do you keep from dropping rocks down in front of my garage?

There’s got to be a way to climb up this hill without a whole bunch of rocks falling down on top of me!

Well, answers are everywhere!

Whoa, yeah, you’re right!

So we just have to find something!

That was fast!

Yeah, if we lay this at the bottom of the hill beside Axel’s garage…

Oh yeah, all the stones would hit that and catch them!

Yeah, and then they won’t go in front of Axel’s garage or on top of me!

What a great idea, Lily!

Come on!

Yeah, okay, I’ll go over here and put the stick into place, and then you do a wheelie!

Okay!

Yeah, just do a wheelie!

Do it!

Oh, Lily, why aren’t you doing it?

That looks pretty good! I think this will totally catch the rocks!

Ready to try?

Of course!

Ready, set, turn!

I’m going back in my garage!

Why? It’s not working!

Look what I can’t see!

Hold on…

Oh no!

Looks like the rocks just kept piling up and then they spilled over!

Is there rocks in front of my door?

Yeah!

Sorry, Axel!

Yeah, we’re sorry, Axel!

So I guess we have to try again!

Yeah, we have to try again!

Alright, let’s get all this stuff cleaned up!

Hold on, I’m gonna wait until you get the signs finished before I try again!

Good idea, Spike!

Okay, I’ll go put up the rest of the signs!

Okay, here’s the turn; that means here is the sign with the arrow that points to the turn, and they’re gonna go this way!

And that’s good!

Okay, so there’s another row coming up here, but that’s just a little road and nobody goes that way, so I don’t need to put a sign there!

And now the road turns, but everybody knows it turns here, so I guess they don’t need a sign to tell them it turns!

Because they would know it turns, right?

And there we go! And then you get to the end, and that’s it!

Well, that was pretty easy! I marked the whole detour, and I guess I only used two signs!

Look at that!

Ha ha! I didn’t need to take all these extra signs after all!

[Music]

Oh, is the detour ready yet?

Oh, I think so!

Zach said give him a few minutes, and it’s definitely been a few minutes, so I guess it’s ready!

Alright, let’s do it!

Yeah!

Alright, let’s do it!

Yeah!

He’s pointing that way!

Yeah, well I guess that means we should go that way!

Oh, alright, let’s go!

[Applause]

Going this way!

Alright, let’s go!

Wait for me!

Oh, there’s another turn coming up!

Okay!

Oh, I don’t see any signs, though! Which way should we go?

Well, I don’t know!

Uh, let’s take the turn!

[Music]

Alright!

[Music]

[Applause]

I wonder where this trail goes…

Hey, where is everybody?

Starbase!

Where did the road go?

Yeah, Zerbies, what are you doing down there? That’s not the way!

Well, there was no sign saying which way to go!

Yeah, so we just took the turn!

Oh, sorry, Zerbies! That’s my fault; I guess I need to use more signs!

Well, that’s okay, Zach! As long as there’s enough signs, then we won’t get confused!

You go back and add some more signs, Zach, and then we’ll get out of here and we’ll try again!

Yeah, okay! Give me a couple minutes, and I’ll put up all the signs that you’ll ever need to know which way the detour is!

Okay!

Okay, that’s a great idea!

Okay, so straight, straight, straight, straight, straight…

And this one warns you to turn; this is coming up, and that one warns you that that’s where the turn was!

And this is if they’re going the other way, and then straight!

And then those ones point that there’s a bit of a wiggle around here, and then she wiggles back and forth!

And this is good!

This is good!

Yeah!

And signs point to the trail that’s in between them, so they’re both pointing at the trail, so you know to go between the signs!

Except I’m out of signs!

I’ll just get some more!

Okay, the sign says go right!

Yeah!

Go straight!

Let’s go left!

Okay, I’m going left!

No!

Hey, they say go everywhere, so we need to go every direction!

So maybe too many signs is just as confusing!

Okay, Zerbies, go back to the start of the detour while I fix these signs!

Oh, it’s time to try again!

Oh yeah!

What was that?

So awesome!

I wonder what Zach’s doing!

[Music]

Zach!

Amazing! But you didn’t make the turn!

But did you see how I fell over? I was all like…

I didn’t make it, but I sure had fun trying!

You know what? I’m gonna go try again!

Alright!

Yeah, okay!

Okay, let’s do this! Here we go!

Ready?

[Music]

You sort of went over the far end there, Zach!

Yeah, I know! I need to start the turn earlier so I’m on it this time!

Try again!

Right, exactly! That’s the Zerby way!

Can I try again too?

Yeah, sure!

Turbo!

Whoa! I didn’t make it!

[Applause]

I should have used my parking brake, but that was close, right?

This train’s pretty hard!

It is, but it’s fun too!

Yeah, okay!

Alright, if we go too high and too fast, we flip over the top, right?

And if we go too low and too slow, we can’t make it all the way around!

So maybe we should just go medium speed?

Yeah!

And start high and then turn to come out low?

Yeah!

Yeah, that might work!

Okay, Jake, you go give it a try!

But me?

Oh sure, you’ve had more practice than anyone!

Yeah, I guess so!

Okay, you can do it, Jake!

Alright, alright! Ready, set, turbo!

Okay!

Hey, I did it!

You did it, Jake! You did it!

You see that? I made it through the whole turn without falling over!

I knew you could!

Yeah, I practiced and I tried again and again, and I finally got it!

You were right, Zach!

Do you want to try again?

Nope!

No, but I’ve got it now! I want to try something else that I can’t do!

Ooh, you know, like that hill by the two trees!

I’ve never been able to climb it!

Hey, me neither! We should totally try it!

Yeah, come on!

Hey, hey! You know what else I don’t know how to do?

What?

Why?

I don’t know if he can fly, Jake!

Well, maybe we just haven’t practiced enough!
