In this lesson, Lily and Zach embark on a fun adventure where they encounter various challenges that require creative problem-solving and teamwork. From figuring out how to help Zach move using a piece of bark for traction, to rescuing their friend Bob from the sand, and successfully making mud, they demonstrate the importance of collaboration and resourcefulness. Ultimately, the lesson emphasizes that with teamwork and a little creativity, any problem can be solved, making the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.
  1. What did Lily and Zach use to help Zach move?
  2. How did Lily and Zach work together to help their friend Bob?
  3. What did Lily and Zach learn about making mud?

Let’s Have Fun with Lily and Zach!

Hey there! Are you ready for a fun adventure with Lily and Zach? Let’s see what they’re up to today!

Trying to Move

Lily and Zach are trying to move forward and backward, but something isn’t working. Lily has an idea! She wants to push Zach to help him move. But oh no, it’s not working! Lily is trying to figure out how to push without stopping herself. What a tricky problem!

Finding a Solution

When things get tough, Lily remembers something important: “Answers are everywhere!” She looks around to find a solution. She spots a piece of bark and thinks it might help. What could she do with it?

Using the Bark

Lily explains that the bark can be used as a plank under Zach’s wheels. This will give the wheels something to grip onto, called traction. Zach thinks it’s a brilliant idea! They try it, and hooray, it works! Zach is moving again!

Helping Bob

Now, Lily and Zach find their friend Bob stuck on the beach. Bob wanted to make a big splash but got stuck in the sand instead. Lily and Zach try to push him back into the water, but it’s not easy. They realize they need to lift Bob’s front so his back can come up. With teamwork, they finally get Bob back in the water!

Making Mud

Next, Lily and Zach want to make mud. They try mixing dirt and water, but it doesn’t work because they accidentally used sand instead of dirt. They learn that sand and dirt are different. Once they use the right dirt, they make perfect mud!

Building a Bigger Sandpit

With the mud ready, Lily and Zach decide to make their sandpit bigger. They use a piece of bark as a scoop to carry sand. It’s like being a dump truck! Their friends join in, and together, they make the sandpit huge!

Learning About Tires

Finally, Lily, Zach, and their friends have a race with different-sized tires. They learn that the biggest tire rolls the farthest. But oh no, one of their friends gets stuck in the mud! With teamwork, they help him out, and everyone is happy again.

Teamwork and Fun

Lily and Zach show us that when we work together and look for answers, we can solve any problem. Whether it’s moving a friend, making mud, or building a sandpit, teamwork makes everything more fun!

Thanks for joining Lily and Zach on their adventure. Remember, answers are everywhere, and you can always find a way to solve problems with a little creativity and teamwork!

  1. What do you think Lily and Zach learned about teamwork during their adventure? Can you think of a time when you worked with someone else to solve a problem?
  2. Why do you think the bark helped Zach move? Have you ever used something in a new way to help solve a problem?
  3. Lily and Zach learned that sand and dirt are different. What other things have you noticed that look similar but are actually different? How did you find out they were different?
  1. Experiment with Traction: Gather different materials like a piece of bark, a small towel, and a piece of cardboard. Place a toy car on each material and try to push it. Which material helps the car move the best? Talk about why some materials might give better traction than others.

  2. Make Your Own Mud: Find a small container and mix dirt and water to make mud. What happens when you add more water or more dirt? Try using sand instead of dirt. Discuss how the texture changes and why it’s important to use the right materials to make mud.

  3. Teamwork Challenge: Create a small obstacle course using household items like pillows, books, and toys. Work together with a friend or family member to move a toy from one end to the other without touching the ground. How does teamwork help you solve the problem? What strategies did you use to succeed?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music]

Ready, set, turbo!

Forward, reverse, forward, reverse.

Uh, Lily, yeah, I don’t think it worked. I think we have to try again. But what will we do this time?

Oh, oh, I know! I’ll push you.

You’re going to push me?

Yeah, I’ll push you.

Okay, push me, Lily. Push me!

[Music]

What happened? Why didn’t you push me?

Oh wait, I’m trying to figure out how to push you without stopping myself. Here we go!

Oh, did that work?

No, it didn’t work. Well, I can’t push you fully because if I do, I’ll stop.

Oh, I’m going to try again.

Okay, get a good run at it.

Okay, I’ll go from way back here.

Okay, here I come!

Here it comes! I’m pushing!

Did it work?

Uh, no.

Oh, I don’t think I can push you any better than that, Zach. If I push you any harder, I’ll get stuck.

Well, that’s a problem. What should we do now?

I don’t know. I’m all out of ideas, and I’m also getting kind of dizzy.

I’m not getting dizzy at all; I’m just stuck here in the sand.

Hmm.

Oh, I know! What do we say when we’re stuck?

Uh, Lily, give me a push?

No, we say answers are everywhere! So I’ll go look around, and maybe I can come up with an answer.

Alright, I’ll see you soon, Zach.

Alright, I’ll just stay here.

Let’s see… edges are everywhere.

Uh, maybe Sam is saying the answer?

No, Sam’s not the answer.

What about a rock?

Hmm, heavy but not helpful.

Okay, moving on.

Let’s see… answers are everywhere.

No, no.

Oh wait, what was that?

Oh, look at that! It’s like some sort of bark.

Oh, I bet you this would work!

Lily, is that you?

Yeah, yeah! I found it!

You found what?

Look, look! It’s a plank!

I don’t understand. It’s a piece of bark. You can use it as a plank.

I don’t get it. How will a plank work?

Well, we’re going to put it under your wheels, and that will give your wheels some traction.

Traction?

Yeah, it will give your wheels something to grip onto.

Oh yeah, that is kind of brilliant!

Hold on. What I’m going to do is drop it right behind your back wheels.

Okay, here you go!

And jumping!

I did it!

Great! Let me try.

Okay, the bark… I can’t quite reach the bark, Lily.

Oh, um, hold on. Let me see if I can bump it closer to your tires.

Okay, and there!

Okay, let me try it now.

Hold on, let me see if I can do that.

I did it!

Yeah, I’m stuck.

Okay, now don’t stop, Zach.

Okay, I’m going backwards. Where should I go?

Down to the water!

Okay!

Yeah, well, Bob was showing me something, and he wound up on the beach, and we seem to be in a sticky, well, kind of a stuck situation.

Bob on the beach? I thought he was a water derby!

He is a water derby! Come help me! We gotta push him back into the lake!

Okay, come on! Show me where!

It’s this way!

Okay, I’m coming!

Wait a sec, just wait for me! I’m right behind you!

Oh, oh, oh! Coming!

Sitting on the beach?

Yeah, see? There’s Bob right there!

Hi, Bob!

Oh, hey!

Oh, hi, Bob! What are you doing on the sand?

Oh, I was gonna do this cool move, and, uh, well…

What cool move?

Well, I go really fast so that I turn and make a wave!

Yeah, he’s gonna splash me! It was really fun, but then I forgot to turn.

Oh, that does sound like fun, but maybe we’ll get you back in the water so you can show me.

That sounds great!

I tried pushing him in, but he didn’t even budge.

Maybe if we both try again?

Sure, let’s do it!

Okay, let’s both go around the front.

Okay, let’s get you!

Yeah, I’ll just come back over there.

Okay, ready?

I’ll push, and then you push too!

Yeah, I’ll just come over here and push too!

Oh wait, too much! I’ll go! Ready?

[Music]

We’re just pushing you deeper into the sand!

Yeah, we now have a big sand pile behind you.

Oh well, we have to try again!

Yes, we do!

Well, what will we do differently this time?

Hmm, well, I think pushing him backward will just make a bigger pile of sand.

Yeah, it’s almost like we’re pushing you down into the sand.

Well, we don’t want to do that anymore.

Nope!

Oh, maybe that’s it! Maybe we need to lift you upwards so you don’t dig down into the sand.

Okay, I’m just gonna lift…

Lily, uh, I don’t think that’s…

No, no! I’m gonna lift and then push him backwards!

It’ll totally…

But Zach, you’re lifting my front up, but my back is being pushed down even more!

Yeah, he’s right, Zach. You gotta put him down.

Oh, okay!

Yeah, we need to push Bob’s front down so his back lifts up.

Hmm, really?

Oh hey, yeah!

So the back goes up if the front goes down.

Sounds good to me!

Hey, yeah!

Yeah, come on! Look at that! I guess that makes sense!

Yeah, uh, so let’s see… I gotta take your front down lower.

I’ll put my wheel on your front there, Bob!

Yeah, go ahead!

Go ahead!

Oh yeah, it looks good!

Okay, whoa!

Hey, a little more!

Alright, a little more!

[Music]

Oh yeah, I can help you! Come on, it’s good!

[Music]

Thank you!

We did it! You’re back in the water, and you’re floating on your own again!

Okay, way to go, guys!

Thanks a lot!

Now that you’re back in the water, Bob, you can show me your new move!

Yeah!

Oh, okay! Here we go!

[Music]

Here comes more dirt dumping!

I can’t mix any more racks!

Can you mix it up?

Sure, I can! Here I go!

It’s mix mixer! It’s even less muddy than before!

I’m so confused. I guess we need to try again.

Well, we tried adding more dirt; that didn’t work. How about we add more water?

Okay!

Dr. Walter, can you bring another load of water, please?

Sure, Zach! I’ll be right there!

[Music]

It looks like it did before, and it’s still not muddy.

I guess we have to try again.

I know! Let’s look around! Answers are everywhere!

Okay, let’s go!

Let’s see… uh, moss.

Uh, we could put the moss in the mud and make… uh, soup?

Nope, I guess not. Bye, moss!

[Applause]

We could use this stick to mix up the mud, but we were mixing pretty well. I don’t think mixing is the answer.

Huh, more dirt?

No, we already tried that.

No, I’ve got dirt over here, Rex!

What have you got over there?

Just more dirt!

How come your dirt looks different from my dirt?

It does?

Oh wait a minute, let me see!

Well, that’s dirt!

See? Brown and dirt, like…

Yeah, and this dirt is… wait a minute! This isn’t dirt! This is sand!

Hey, yeah! That is sand! Is that what you were using?

I don’t remember!

Hey, Phil! Phil!

Hey, what’s going on, Turbies? What did you load me up with before?

Sand! Good old sandy sand!

So when you add water to sand, what do you get?

You get… uh… wet sand?

Uh, I guess not mud!

No, no! You have to add water and dirt together to get mud! Sand and dirt are different!

Oh, I never really thought about that!

So do you want dirt?

Yes, please!

Yeah, yeah! We want dirt!

There! All the sand is out of the hole!

You ready to add the dirt, Rex?

Yep!

Jumping dirt!

Alright, here comes the water!

Hey, it looks muddy already!

Yeah, mix it up, Rex!

Alright!

Hey, Walter!

Do you want to play in the mud with us?

No thanks! I’m working on something!

What’s that?

Well, a sand and water mix may not make mud, but it makes super sand sculptures!

Wow, that’s great! Now this trail has two fun things!

Yeah! We’ve got that sand derby, and we’ve got the mud!

Yeah, mud and sand derby!

Hey, look at me! I’m hauling sand!

What do I do now, Rex?

Well, come on! We have to drive back!

Okay!

Okay, look at me!

And I’m driving with my sand!

Oh my gosh!

And I’m hauling it!

Zach, you dropped all your sand!

I did?

Oh no! There’s still a little bit there, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough.

Yeah, you’re right!

I guess I don’t have a nifty bucket to hold this in like you do.

I guess this idea didn’t work.

It’s okay! We can always try again!

You’re right, Rex! What should we do differently?

Well, why don’t we look around? Answers are everywhere!

Oh, good idea!

Do you see anything?

Right there’s nothing back there.

I don’t see anything yet!

I don’t either!

Uh, hey! Maybe… hey, Rex, come and look at this!

Oh, what is it, Zach?

Look at this bark! It looks like a scoop!

Yeah, it’s sort of the same shape as my dump bucket!

I bet I could use this bark to carry sand!

Oh yeah, I bet it would hold a lot of sand!

Okay, let’s take it back to the sandpit! Help me get it on my roof!

Okay, let’s do it!

Alright, let me try this again with my fancy new scoop!

Okay, I think it’s gonna work! Are you ready?

Okay, all set!

Hey, look at that! It totally fits on there!

Okay, just let me back up!

Hey, how’s it working?

I think it works really well!

Look at that!

Alright, let’s go back to Zerbytown!

Oh, I have to get a load too!

Oh, okay! I’ll stay here!

Ah, there we go! Yay! Back to Derbytown!

Back to Zerbytown!

Come on, Zach!

I’m coming!

I just… this is heavy!

Sure it is, but you can do it!

Do you think I would make a good dump truck?

Yeah! This hill is steep, but I think I would make a good dump truck!

You would!

How are you doing?

I’m good! What is…

I spilled some! Is that okay if I spill some?

That’s fine! You’re still a dump truck!

You’re still a dump truck!

Hey, look, Zach!

Oh, hey, Rex!

Hey, Zach! What do you do?

Oh, hi, Lily! I’m helping Rex move sand in this Derbytown sand pit so we can make it bigger!

Oh, that sounds like fun!

It is!

Okay, see you later!

Whoa! I’m a dump truck!

Wow! Making the sandpit bigger is a great idea! So is carrying all that sand in that bark scoop! That gives me an idea!

Okay, show me how it’s done, Rex!

First, I dump, come in, and I drive away like this!

Oh yeah! Dump truck!

Okay, here I go!

Wait! My work doesn’t dump like that, Rex! What do I do?

Uh, just move around!

Oh, okay!

Okay, dump truck!

Gun truck!

Dumping, dumping!

It worked!

Hey, it’s bigger already!

Yeah, but we’re still gonna need more sand!

Did someone say more sand?

Lily, Spike!

What are you guys doing here?

Well, it looked like you were having so much fun hauling sand, we thought we would help!

This is great!

Hey, bigger sandpit!

So how do we get the sand off?

Okay, you have to be dump trucks!

Okay, so you have to move around really fast and dump your sand out!

Okay!

So there we are on top of the hill with me and my little tire, Lily with her bigger tire, and Rex with his giant tire!

Ready, set, turbo!

And then we rolled our tires!

Okay, let me guess, let me guess!

Okay, you have a small tire, a medium tire, and a large tire!

I think Axel’s tire went the farthest because it’s the smallest and the lightest!

Is that what happened?

Nope!

My tire was the first tire to slow down!

You see, it fell over, and Lily and Rex’s kept going!

Ah, so whose tire won?

Well, I thought my tire was gonna win, but mine rolled into a bunch of rocks, and Rex’s just kept going and going!

Wow! So the biggest, heaviest tire went the farthest?

Yep! It went all the way to the giant mud puddle, and then it fell over like sploosh!

And that’s why you’re covered in mud!

What a great ending to this story!

Well, that’s not the end!

It’s not?

No!

See, Jets went to get his tire out of the mud, but he got stuck!

Uh-oh! I’m stuck!

And he tried to push him out, but each of us only had three tires!

And that’s how he got muddy!

And that’s the end of the story!

But wait! The camp at the end! How did you get Rex out of the mud?

We didn’t!

What?

Yeah, he’s still stuck in the mud!

That’s why we came to get you!

But spitting spark plugs! That should have been at the beginning of the story!

Oh, okay! Let’s try again and start at the very beginning!

So we came to get you!

No, because Rex is stuck in the mud!

The reason why was because Lily and I weren’t gonna happen!

Yeah, and we thought…

No, no, no, no, no!

Zurbys, Derby’s! No need to try again!

I got the whole story! Now we need to go get Rex out!

Oh yeah! Okay, come on! Let’s go!

Yeah, uh, can you get our tires out of the bush for us?

We couldn’t get them because we only have three wheels!

I was wondering why you didn’t put your tires back on!

Oh, I’m stuck in the mud! But that’s okay! I can’t get out!

But we’ll find a way!

Rex, are you alright?

Oh, I’m okay! The mud feels kind of good, actually! But I wouldn’t mind getting out now!

Sorry we took so long, Rex! Zach had to help us get our tires out of the bush so we could all help you!

Yeah, and we had to tell our story! But now we can get you out!

Come on, Zurbys!

Okay, Lily, you push Rex!

Use Zurbys! Push! I’ll supervise!

Ready, set, go!

[Music]

Hey, yeah! We did it!

Hey, I’m out!

Yes!

We pushed you out of the mud!

Thanks, Zurbys!

No problem!

That was funny!

Okay, everybody back to Derbytown!

Let’s go!

Oh yeah! Yeah! Come on!

Yeah, let’s go!

Oh, wait a minute! I don’t have my tire on yet!

You’re still in the mud!

Uh, Zurbys, I gotta get my tires!

[Music]
