One snowy day, Zach decided to build the best snow fort ever. He found the perfect spot under a big tree. “This is it!” he said. He imagined walls here, a snow garage there, and more walls all around. It was time to start building!
Zach gathered some snow and tried to make a snowboard. But it wasn’t working well. “I need a better way,” he thought. So, he packed the snow tightly and flipped the box over. “Look, a perfect snow brick!” he cheered. Zach kept working, dreaming of the biggest snow fort in history.
After lots of hard work, Zach finished his fort. “I’ll call it Fort Derby,” he declared proudly. The walls were tall, and he was excited to climb on top. “I need a ramp to get up there,” he decided. Once the ramp was ready, Zach climbed up and shouted, “I am King Zach of Fort Derby!”
Just then, his friend Spike arrived. “Hey, Zach! How did you get in?” Zach asked. Spike laughed, “I just drove around the wall and up the ramp.” Zach realized he needed walls on all sides. He quickly got to work, making sure no one could enter without his permission.
Zach decided to have a secret password for entering the fort. “The password is waffles!” he announced. But then he realized there was no door! “Oh no, I’m locked out!” he exclaimed. Zach needed a way to get back inside.
Zach had a great idea. He used a stick to dig a doorway through the snow. “Perfect!” he said. Now he could get in and out easily. But Spike pointed out, “If there’s no door, anyone can come in!” Zach agreed and decided to make a door using a box.
With the box as a gate, Fort Derby was finally secure. “No one can enter without the password!” Zach declared. Spike tried to get in, and Zach asked, “What’s the password?” Spike replied, “Waffles!” and Zach let him in.
Now that Fort Derby was complete, Zach and Spike wanted to tell everyone about it. “Let’s invite our friends!” Zach said excitedly. They laughed and played, making sure to remember the password and not lock themselves out again.
Building a snow fort is so much fun! You can use your imagination and create your own special place. Just remember to make a door so you can always get back inside!
Build Your Own Mini Fort: Gather some small containers or boxes and fill them with snow or sand to create your own mini fort. Try making different shapes and sizes of bricks. How tall can you make your fort? Can you build a ramp or a doorway like Zach did? Share your creation with a friend or family member and explain how you built it.
Design a Secret Password: Just like Zach, come up with a secret password for your fort or a special place at home. Think about why having a password is important. Can you think of other places where passwords are used? Discuss with a friend or family member how passwords help keep things secure.
Observe and Draw: Go outside and observe different types of snow or sand structures, like snowmen, sandcastles, or even piles of snow. Draw a picture of what you see and label the parts, such as walls, doors, or ramps. Imagine what it would be like to build a fort there and describe it to someone else.

I need the perfect spot. How about under this tree? It’s perfect! I’ll have walls over here, my snow garage will be back here, and more walls over here. Time to get building!
Okay, there’s a little snow. Is it going to be the best snowboard? There, it’s done! Now to try it out. Climbing on my snowboard…
[Music]
It’s not very impressive. I need a better way to do this.
[Music]
There we go, a little bit like that. Now to pack it down.
[Music]
And now I need a way to flip the box over. Hmm, maybe if I just lean over to the side a little like this, I can make it. There, the box is flipped over, and so am I!
[Music]
Okay, push the box back to the spot. Oh, it’s heavy! Yeah, this is good. Maybe a little like that.
Okay, now I need to lift the box up, and I will have a brick of snow. Lift, lift! I guess because I need to try again.
[Music]
Look at that, a perfect brick of snow! My snow fort is still pretty small, but I’ll just keep working on it, and eventually, it’ll be the biggest snow fort in history. It’s going to be the greatest snow fort!
[Music]
Okay, one more try after that. There we go! It must have been stuck or something. At least I’m done!
Oh hey, I’m done! I shall call it Fort Derby. It was worth all the work. Whoa, look at the walls! They’re so tall! I’m going to check it out from behind here. Fort Derby!
Now to climb on top of Fort Derby and see what I can do. Hmm, those walls are pretty tall. I guess I should make a ramp. When I have this ramp, I will be on top of Fort Derby. No one can get in unless I give them permission.
That looks about right. Let’s try it out!
[Music]
And I did it! I finished! Oh, there’s Spike. Hey Spike!
Oh hi, Zach! Wow, look at this! I am King Zach of Fort Derby, and no one can come in unless I give them permission.
Oh, that’s a nice view! Spike, how’d you get into my snow fort?
Well, I just drove around the wall and came up the ramp.
Oh yeah, I guess I need a wall on every side, huh? Just four walls. I’ll just go get my box and start filling it with snow.
Good luck, King Zach! Fort Derby is going to be so great as soon as I get this last brick into place.
Bye, Zach!
Hi Spike, you need help with Fort Derby?
Oh no, I’m almost finished! I just have to push this last box of snow into that spot. Almost done, and then I will be king of the fort! Then the others will have to ask my permission to enter.
Sounds like fun, Zach! Let me know when it’s finished.
Okay, all right.
Like this… there we go!
And then holding on to the rope…
[Music]
You did it, Zach! There are walls all the way around!
I did it! Yes! Now no one can get into my fort! I am King Zach of Fort Derby, and I rule with an iron fist!
Oh, hail King Zach!
So now what?
Oh, okay! Ask my permission to come inside!
Oh King Zach, may I come inside Fort Derby?
What is the password?
I don’t know, you never told me a password.
Oh right, it’s waffles! The password is waffles. Come in, my loyal subject!
Once…
[Music]
Yeah, I can’t get in!
What? There’s no door?
What?
Hey, you’re right! There’s no door, and now you’re outside the fort too!
Wait, what? No! I am King of Fort Derby! I demand to be on the inside!
I’ll come back later when you figure it out.
Okay, bye Spike!
Oh, I wonder if these kinds of things happen to other kings. It’s lonely being king.
I, King Zach, have built Fort Derby, the biggest and best snow fort ever in town, and I have locked myself out because I didn’t make a way to get back in. But fear not, this will fix everything!
Hi King Zach!
Oh hi, Spike! It’s just regular Zach until I can get back inside Fort Derby.
Oh hi, regular Zach! What are you doing?
I’m building a ramp. I have a ramp on the inside of the fort so I can drive up to the top of the wall. Now I’m making a ramp on this side so I can get in.
Oh, that’s a good idea! Then anyone can come into the fort whenever they want.
Why let me know when you finish it?
I didn’t think of that! If I have a ramp on this side, no one’s going to need my permission to come in. I guess I better try again!
But first, I better get rid of this ramp. All I need to do is dig through the wall.
Okay, let’s give it a try!
That is going to take forever! I just need to try again and find something I can use to dig through the snow.
This stick will do it!
And it’s digging!
No, it’s working!
[Music]
There! One perfectly carved-out doorway!
And how did you get in?
I just drove through the open doorway!
Right! The password is waffles!
I know, but there’s no point in having a password if you can just come in.
Oh yeah, you’re right! I need a door, I guess.
Whoa! Well, I need some waffles!
See you!
Hello! I like waffles!
[Music]
The greatest snow fort ever built by me! No one can enter my snow fort without permission just as soon as I make a door.
What do I have that’s big enough to cover this hole?
Ah, now Fort Derby is once again secure! No one can get in!
Using a box as the gate is perfect! Now no one will be able to get in!
Oh, is that a box for a gate? That’s fun!
Look at that!
Okay, I have a new idea! Try it now!
Okay!
[Music]
Oh, I can’t get in!
Zach!
Excellent! Now you must give me the password!
Waffles!
Correct! Now I will let you into Fort Derby!
Okay, can I come in?
Hold on, hold on! Almost!
Now you can come in!
Why?
[Applause]
Come on, let’s go to the top!
Hold on, I have to put the stick back!
Yeah, wait for me!
Yeah, it worked!
[Music]
So now what?
Oh, now we tell all the others about it!
Oh yeah, okay! Come on!
Yay!
Where are you supposed to open the door first?
Oh no, I knocked myself out!
No!
Come on!
The password is…
No! You’ve locked yourself out!
I did!
Oh well, we’ll get the others and maybe we can make a second door!
Oh, a second door! That will be the second gate!
Well, don’t lock yourself out of that!
Oh!
