share us on:

In today’s lesson, young adventurers embarked on a stick-collecting journey, learning the importance of teamwork while gathering and organizing their finds. They creatively transformed their collected materials into a beautiful driveway and navigated their way back using signs, while also addressing obstacles like filling holes in the trail. The key takeaway was that collaboration and perseverance lead to successful and enjoyable adventures.
  1. What did we collect on our adventure?
  2. How did we work together to carry the sticks?
  3. What did we make to help us find our way back?

Let’s Go on a Stick Adventure!

Hey there, little adventurer! Today, we’re going on a fun journey to collect sticks. Sticks are everywhere on the ground, and we need to find a nice open spot to gather them. Are you ready? Let’s go!

Finding the Perfect Sticks

Look around! There are so many sticks. Some are long, and some are short. Can you find a really long stick? Wow, great job! Stick hunting is so much fun, isn’t it?

Carrying Our Sticks

Now that we have lots of sticks, we need to figure out how to carry them. Maybe we can tie them all together to make one big bundle. But oh no, it’s too heavy! What if we carry them together? Let’s try it!

Teamwork Makes It Easier

Okay, let’s lift the sticks together. Ready? One, two, three, lift! Yay, we did it! But wait, we can’t see where we’re going. Let’s put the sticks down and try again.

Organizing Our Sticks

Let’s lay all the sticks in the same direction and tie them up neatly. Now, it’s much easier to carry. Great teamwork! Watch out for the trees as we walk back to Derbytown.

Making a Pretty Driveway

Back in Derbytown, we have another fun idea. Let’s make a pretty driveway using rocks, pine cones, and flowers. We can make a pattern with them: rock, pine cone, flower. Doesn’t it look beautiful?

Following the Signs

Oh no, we’re lost! We need signs to show us the way. Let’s put up some signs with arrows so we know where to go. Now, we can follow the signs and find our way back easily. Yay, we did it!

Big Wheels Adventure

Look at those big wheels! They can climb over rocks and logs. But be careful, big wheels can be heavy and make you tired. It’s important to have the right wheels for the adventure you want to go on.

Filling the Holes

Uh-oh, there’s a hole in the trail! Let’s find something to fill it. How about a log? It’s just the right size. Let’s cover it with dirt and pack it down. Now, the trail is safe for everyone!

Great Job, Little Adventurer!

You did an amazing job today! We collected sticks, made a pretty driveway, followed signs, and fixed the trail. Remember, teamwork and trying again are the keys to success. See you on our next adventure!

  • What was your favorite part of the stick adventure, and why did you like it? Can you think of a time when you went on an adventure and found something interesting?
  • How do you think teamwork helped during the stick adventure? Can you share a time when you worked with someone else to solve a problem or complete a task?
  • If you could create your own adventure using sticks, rocks, and other things you find outside, what would you do? What patterns or designs would you make?
  1. Stick Sorting Game: Gather a variety of sticks from outside and bring them into the classroom. Ask the children to sort the sticks by length, from shortest to longest. Encourage them to use descriptive words like “short,” “medium,” and “long” to describe the sticks. Discuss why some sticks might be better for certain tasks, like building a small fort or making a walking stick.

  2. Create a Nature Pattern: Using materials like rocks, pine cones, and flowers, let the children create their own patterns on the ground. Encourage them to think about the sequence and repeat it, just like the pattern in the driveway from the story. Ask them questions like, “What comes next in your pattern?” or “Can you make a pattern using only two types of objects?”

  3. Trail Fixing Challenge: Set up a small obstacle course with holes or gaps that need to be “fixed” using objects like small logs or stones. Encourage the children to work together to fill the holes, just like in the story. Ask them to think about which objects are best for filling different sizes of holes and why teamwork is important in solving these problems.

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music] Let’s gather some sticks. There are always sticks on the ground, but we need a nice open spot on the trail to collect them. Oh, here’s a good spot! Perfect! I bet I can find more sticks than you.

No way, Lily! Look at this long one I found! That’s nothing! Whoa, here comes another stick! I found a bunch over here! Oh, I found some too! I’m bringing this one over. Stick hunting is fun!

Yeah! I found two more! Oh, there you go! Do you think that’s enough? Yeah! Now how are we going to get them all back to Derbytown?

Maybe we can tie them all together so they stay as one big bundle. I don’t know; that’ll be a big bundle of sticks. That’s a lot to carry, even with my roof rack. Hmm, maybe we can carry it together.

Oh, okay! Let’s try it! Okay, all tied up now. Let’s lift it together. [Music]

Okay, I got my side. Okay, I’m ready! Yay! Let’s go back to Derbytown! Which way is it? Uh, I can’t really see.

Me neither. So I think we drove off the trail. We did! Yeah, we need to put these sticks down.

Oh, okay. Well, the good news is that we can carry all of the sticks. Yeah, but we can’t see or drive very well. We just need to try again. If the bundle is too messy, let’s clean it up.

Oh, okay. Uh, maybe we lay all the sticks in the same direction and tie them up like that. Okay, let’s try it!

Okay, my end is tied. Well, look at me! I’m way ahead of you, Zach! Wow, you’re fast! Okay, let me lift them up. Easy, easy. There!

Okay, we just have to get around this tree. Oh, turn, Lily! And we did it! Okay, all right, good job! I hope that trail stays open. We need a lot of room.

Yeah, we really do. Oh no, there’s another tree! No! We gotta go around it! But how?

Uh, okay, backing up. Back up! Back, back, back! Oh, we hit another tree! Oh no, I’m still hitting the tree over here. I don’t know if this is working.

Zach, we should just try again. Let’s just put them down. Okay, when we carry them together, it takes up too much space. Well, maybe we could take turns carrying them by ourselves.

Hmm, okay, let’s try it! Okay, Zach, you carry them for a while, and then we’ll switch.

Yeah, okay! Ready, set, go!

Okay, I don’t think there are any more pine cones. I think I’ve got all the ones from my side. I’ve got a nice little pile of pine cones. Oh, what about you, Zach?

Yeah, I collected all the ones from my side. I got a bunch too! Oh, this is great! Let’s get them back to my garage.

Yeah, these will definitely work better! Yeah, these pine cones look nice!

I think so too, Lily! And as soon as I line them on the other side, everyone will know it’s my driveway for sure!

I’ve only got a couple pine cones left. Where are the rest of yours, Lily?

I used all of mine! Oh, out of the road! It’s my driveway!

Really bends my fender. It’s okay, Lily! Let’s just try again! You’re right, Zach! Besides, I was just thinking how pretty my driveway would look if I lined it with flowers!

Flowers it is! Ready, set, go! These flowers will definitely work! I hope so!

[Music]

Well, I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news. The good news is the flowers look great!

Yeah, what’s the bad news? That’s all the flowers!

Oh, excuse me! Oh, sorry! This is really grinding my gears! There’s never enough of anything, and we’ve been collecting all day—rocks, pine cones, and flowers!

Wait a second, Lily! Maybe we didn’t have enough of one thing, but we definitely have lots of everything! Let’s just use all of it!

Well, that’s a super smart idea, Zach! Okay, I’ll get the pine cones, and I’ll get the rocks!

Yeah, we did it, Lily! By using everything we gathered—with all the rocks, the pine cones, and the flowers—we had enough to line both sides of your driveway!

You’re right, Zach! And now everyone can clearly see it’s my driveway! Look, see?

Hmm, nice driveway, Lily!

Yeah, but I also wanted to make my driveway look pretty, and this looks… well, I don’t know, not so pretty.

It does look kind of messy, doesn’t it?

We’re so close, Zach! I know we can fix this problem!

You bet your battery we can! Let’s just try again and make sure we have enough of one thing. Uh, what would you like best—a driveway lined with rocks, pine cones, or flowers?

Rock, pine cone, flower! Rock, pine cone, flower! That’s it!

What? What’s it? We could use all the things we have and make a pattern with them!

A pattern, of course! Uh, what pattern do you want?

Hmm, let’s see. I like the way two rocks look together, and I like the way two flowers look together, and maybe we could separate with pine cones.

All right, let’s try it!

Yay! Yeah, it looks great! I know! It’s so wonderful, and it’s pretty too!

Hey, that’s a nice driveway, Lily!

Thank you!

Yeah! It’s pointing that way!

Well, I guess that means we should go that way!

Oh, all right! Let’s go!

[Applause]

Going this way! All right, let’s go!

Wait for me!

Oh, there’s another turn coming up! Okay!

Oh, I don’t see any signs of which way we should go!

Oh, I don’t know! Uh, let’s take the turn!

All right!

[Music]

[Applause]

I wonder where this trail goes!

Hey, where is everybody?

Starbase! Well, where did the road go?

Yeah, Derbys! What are you doing down there? That’s not the way!

Well, there was no sign saying which way to go!

Yeah, so we just took the turn!

Oh, sorry, Zerbies! That’s my fault! I guess I need to use more signs!

Well, that’s okay, Zach! As long as there’s enough signs, then we won’t get confused!

You go back and add some more signs, Zach, and then we’ll get out of here and we’ll try again!

Yeah, okay! Give me a couple minutes, and I’ll put up all the signs that you’ll ever need to know which way the detour is!

Okay, okay!

That’s a great idea! Okay, so straight, straight, straight, straight, straight! And this one warns you to turn this coming up, and that one warns you that that’s where the turn was, and this is if they’re going the other way, and then straight!

And then those ones point that there’s a bit of a wiggle around here, and then she wiggles back and forth!

And this is good! This is good!

Yeah!

And these signs point to the trail that’s in between them, so they’re both pointing at the trail, so you know to go between the signs!

Except I’m out of signs! I’ll just get some more!

Okay, the sign says go right!

Yeah!

I gotta say go straight!

Dead left!

Okay, I’m going left!

So maybe too many signs is just as confusing!

Uh-oh! Okay, Derbys, go back to the start of the detour while I fix these signs!

Oh, it’s time to try again!

Okay, I’m gonna mark every turn and only use the right number of signs! So first, they should go this way! Great!

And then I gotta put one here that goes that way!

And then there!

And a couple going straight!

And then a turn!

And then this one goes straight!

This time I mark every single turn clearly with just one arrow sign so no one will get lost or confused!

And now to let the other Derbies know that they can start the detour!

Oh, that’s Zach’s horn! All right, the detour’s ready! I sure hope it works this time!

Yeah, me too! I don’t want to end up upside down like last time!

Yeah!

Okay, where do we go now?

Oh, wait! I see the sign! Here it is!

Oh, it’s working!

Yay! Another sign is coming up, Derbys! This way!

Hey! Yeah! Which way?

Great detour, Zach!

We knew you could do it!

Yeah! Way to go, Zach!

No problems, Derbys! I’m glad you enjoyed the ride!

Oh, yeah!

Oh, yeah!

Well, I can’t… I can’t get up there!

Your super big wheels are even better for climbing than mine!

Oh, I know! Time to try again!

Zach, I’m fine! I’ll be right back!

Okay!

Hey, Mika! Can I have some bigger wheels?

Bigger wheels? That’s what everybody wants today!

[Music]

I’ve got very big wheels, and I can go anywhere that I…

[Music]

Check out my wheels! Oh, spinning spark plugs!

My wheels are so big, I was able to climb that rock and all these rocks! Check them out!

They’re even bigger than your wheels!

Well, you’re right! They are bigger than my wheels! They’re super duper big!

They’re awesome!

Yeah! Let’s go try driving around on stuff and see what we can drive over with our ginormous wheels!

Yeah! All right!

I’ll help you there!

Hey, look at that!

Oh, look! I look at this! Look! I’m gonna see if I can climb it!

Yeah! I did it! Amazing!

I got this log! What do you think about that, Axel?

Well, that log is too big for my wheels, but I know exactly what to do!

[Music]

Your wheels are… I know the super ginormous wheels in all of Zerby Town!

Super duper big!

Yeah!

Yeah!

Are you okay, Axel?

Yeah, yeah! I’m just really tired!

Yeah, these big wheels are really hard to move, aren’t they?

Yeah!

Oh, hey! There’s Lily!

Lily!

Zach!

Super duper! Some big wheels are hard to move!

Oh boy! Whoa! You both got bigger wheels, Axel! Your wheels are amazing!

I know, right?

Oh boy! Do you want Mika to put super tall wheels on you too, Lily?

Ah, no thanks, Zach! I like my wheels the way they are! They’re perfect for everywhere I want to go!

Oh, uh, okay! Where are you going now?

I’m gonna go to the lake to visit Bob the Boat! You want to join me?

Oh, well, sure! All right! Let’s go!

Hey!

Oh no! I think I got a problem!

What’s that?

I think I used up all my battery!

All of your batteries?

Yeah, yeah! These super big wheels are so heavy, and now my battery’s dead!

Well, you should just start from Mika’s shop with a fully charged battery next time!

Well, that’s the thing! I did start with a fully charged battery, and it’s dead now!

Wow, that was bad!

Okay, let’s load this one up! I’ll tip backwards, and you push it into my bucket!

Okay, you got it! Bucket going up!

Hey, Rex!

Okay, tipping!

Okay, go ahead and load it up, Zach!

Okay, right!

It’s not working, Rex!

Uh, what’s wrong?

I’m pushing it, but it’s not moving!

[Music]

I think it’s too heavy, Rex!

Oh yeah, it’s not moving at all!

Looks like we need a different plan!

I don’t understand! It’s smaller than me, and you can lift me in your bucket! Rocks are much heavier than Zerbies! Even a rock smaller than you can weigh much more than you!

Huh, I guess hauling a rock back might be a little tough! Let’s go look for something else!

Yeah!

[Applause]

Pine needles take a lot of work to gather up enough pine needles!

Let’s see… What about…

Um, hey Rex! I found something over here!

You did? Coming!

[Music]

Where are you, Zach?

I’m here behind this log!

Oh, that’s pretty good! I know! It’s as tall as me, and it’s just a bit longer than me! It’s the perfect size! But I don’t know, Rex! A log the size of a Zerby has got to be super heavy!

Duh! Well, let’s find out, right?

Okay, tip it towards me!

I lifted it!

Wow! You did it! How heavy is it?

Well, it’s definitely heavier than a Zerby, but much, much lighter than the rock!

Come on! Let’s put it in the hole!

Yeah, okay! Let’s do it!

Backing up! Okay, just a little bit farther! I’ll tell you when!

Okay, okay! Hold on! And right there!

[Music]

Now what?

Now we just need a little bit of dirt to cover up the top and pack it down!

Great! Dumping!

Backpack! Pack! Pack!

Is that enough packing down?

Yeah, looks great! You can’t even tell the hole was there!

Another job well done!

That’s great, Rex! Now Derbies can drive along this trail without falling into any more holes!

Another hole!

Hi, Zach! We needed some more dirt! After all, this is the best dirt around!

I’m ready to load you up, Rex!

Yay!

Oh, well, can someone help me out of the hole?

No! It’s so easy to put!

Yes, it’s also so light and fluffy! Can you help me under the hole?

Yeah! It’s like if a cake was dirt! This is what it would be like to build with a cake!

[Music]

Let me know if you need any further modifications!
