In the lesson “Making Waves and Having Fun!”, Zach and his friends explore different ways to create waves in the water, initially failing with their attempts but eventually discovering creative solutions. They learn the value of teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance as they help each other, build a raft, and utilize the wind to enhance their fun. The key takeaway is that when faced with challenges, it’s important to keep searching for answers and not give up.
  1. What did Zach and his friends do to try to make waves in the water?
  2. How did Rex help Bob when he got stuck in the shallow water?
  3. What did Zach learn about using the wind to help him?

Making Waves and Having Fun!

One day, Zach and his friends wanted to make waves in the water. Zach tried running really fast, but it didn’t work. “I can’t make enough wind to make waves,” he said. Then he had an idea. “Rex, can you build a jump out of dirt right here? I’m going to get my life jacket on!”

Jumping into the Water

Rex built a ramp, and Zach got ready to jump into the water. “When I jump in, maybe it’ll make waves,” Zach thought. He put on his life jacket and shouted, “Ready, set, turbo!” He jumped, and a wave appeared! But it wasn’t very big. “I thought that would work,” Zach said. “Still, it was a great jump!”

Finding New Ways

They decided to try something different. “Let’s look around; answers are everywhere,” Zach said. They found a dock and tried bouncing on it together. “Wow, look at all the waves!” they cheered. But then Bob got stuck because the water was too shallow.

Helping Bob

Rex had an idea. “Bob, I’m going to get you over the shallow part. You’re going to ride in my bucket!” Bob hopped in, and Rex drove him to the other side. “That was a great solution, Rex!” Zach said.

More Ideas

They kept looking for more ways to make waves. “Answers are everywhere!” they said. They found sticks and used them to mark where the rocks were in the water. “Now we can see the sticks and know where the rocks are!” Zach said.

Building a Raft

They tried making a raft from leaves, but it didn’t work. “Maybe we need more sticks,” Rex suggested. They gathered fallen branches and tied them together to make a raft. “Hey, it floats!” they cheered as they tried it out.

Using the Wind

Finally, they realized they could use the wind to help them. “Instead of fighting the wind, I should use it to help me get where I’m going,” Zach said. He let the wind push him towards the dock, and it worked perfectly!

Having Fun

After all their adventures, Zach and his friends were happy. “I’m going swimming!” Zach said. “Will you be my swimming buddy?” “You got it!” his friend replied. They all had a great time playing and learning together.

Remember

Sometimes, when things don’t work out the first time, it’s important to try again and look for new solutions. Answers are everywhere if you keep looking!

  • What are some ways you have fun with your friends when you’re outside? Can you think of a time when you tried something new and it didn’t work out the first time?
  • Have you ever had to solve a problem like Zach and his friends did? What did you do to find a solution, and how did it make you feel?
  • Why do you think it’s important to keep trying and looking for new answers when something doesn’t work out? Can you share a story about a time you learned something new by trying again?
  1. Wave Makers: At home or in a safe outdoor area, fill a shallow tray or basin with water. Use different objects like a small ball, a spoon, or your hand to create waves. Observe how each object makes different types of waves. Discuss with a friend or family member why you think the waves change with different objects. Can you make a big wave? A small wave?

  2. Wind Power: On a windy day, go outside with a small piece of paper or a leaf. Hold it up and see how the wind moves it. Try to use the wind to make the paper or leaf travel from one point to another. Talk about how Zach used the wind to help him in the story. How can you use the wind to help you in other activities?

  3. Creative Solutions: Think of a problem you might have, like reaching a high shelf or organizing your toys. Draw a picture of a creative solution to your problem, just like Zach and his friends found different ways to make waves. Share your drawing with someone and explain your idea. How did you come up with your solution?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any unnecessary sounds and keeping the focus on the dialogue and actions:

I don’t think it’s working, Zach. Yes, I got me! I gotta go faster. I can’t make enough wind to make waves. It’s not gonna work. We’ll just have to try again, I guess.

Oh, what if I go in the water like this? That works a little better. Still not very big waves, though. Yes, but it gives me an idea. Rex, can you build a jump right here? I’m gonna go get my life jacket on.

A jump out of dirt? I can do that, no problem. Building a ramp next to the water might get damp. Are you sure you want to jump facing this way, Zach? You’ll end up jumping in the water.

That’s the idea, Rex! When I jump in the water, maybe it’ll make waves. Then Bob can jump over, right?

Okay, wearing my life jacket, I’ve got my swimming buddies watching. Time to get wet! All set, Zach? Ready, set, turbo!

Hey, it worked! There’s a wave coming your way. Okay, I’m ready! Did it work? Uh oh, they’re not very big. I thought that would work. Still, it was a great jump!

Did you see? I saw it; it was great! I’m just not very fast in the water. Can you give me a push, Bob? Yeah, sure, no problem. You’re almost ashore, Zach.

That was difficult. I wonder if there’s a way we can make waves without me having to jump in the water and get cold. You don’t want to try again? I think we should, but maybe we should try something different. Let’s look around; answers are everywhere. Maybe there’s a better way to make waves. Come on!

Hey, well, hello, Mr. Leaf! I wonder if I can use you. Nah, let’s see. Um, there’s a stump here. Uh, no, that’s not gonna do anything. What about lily pads? Could we use those?

Hey, Bob, Zach, come here and look at this! Hey, you’re making waves! How? I don’t know; I just drove out on the dock like this.

Wow! Let me help. Okay, it’s not working. I think we need to bounce together. Okay, ready? All right, look at that! It’s amazing! Wow, look at all the waves! This is fun!

What happened, Bob? I’m stuck; the water was deeper before. Yeah, that was us; we put gravel here so we could drive all the way to the rocks. Well, if the water’s too shallow, I can’t drive through. Sorry about that. Let’s try again.

Oh, okay. What should we do? Maybe I could help. You can help? How? You’ll see. Okay, give him a push into the water there, Zach. Okay, like this? That’s it!

Okay, now Bob, I’m gonna get you over the shallow part. You’re gonna ride in my bucket. Oh, in your bucket? Yeah, hop in! Okay, how’s that? Great! Now I’m just going to drive to the other side. Hold on, turning around.

Well, this is fun! Okay, hang on there. Whoa, it’s going great! Okay, now I’m going to dump you on the other side. You ready? Okay, all set!

Down on the other side! Hey, well, that was a great solution, Rex! I went from one side to this shallow part to the other. It did work great, Rex, but every time Bob needs to get to the other side, he’s gonna have to travel on you.

Oh, yeah, I never thought of that. And what about Fred the fairy? You can’t carry her across a shallow part, can you? No, I don’t think so. I guess this idea won’t work, but it was a fun one. We’ll just have to try again.

But what should we do differently? I don’t know; I’m stuck. Well, you know what we say when we’re stuck, right? Answers are everywhere! Come on, let’s go!

Okay, let’s see. Oh, look, there’s these little mushrooms. They’re pretty cute, but I don’t see how we could use them to make the water deeper. Okay, let’s see. Uh, nothing over here. Oh, hey, there’s a rock there. Uh, no, I can’t think of any way we could use that.

Hey, look at this! A large dead tree. Uh, no, that’s not going to do it at all. Nope. My tree! You bought anything yet, Zach? Not yet.

Hey, Bob, how are you driving through the water here? What do you mean? The water is deep enough for me to drive through here, but hey, look, it’s also shallow enough for me to drive through here. Oh, yeah! That means there’s a perfect depth the water can be. Come on, let’s tell Rex!

Sure, I don’t understand, but I’m with you, Zach. Okay, let’s see. That looks like the right height. I don’t understand the right height for what? Well, now that we’ve dug down a bit, the water is deeper here, but look, it’s still shallow enough for me to drive through.

Oh, yeah! But now we can see if it’s deep enough for Bob to drive through as well. Are you ready, Bob? Yeah, here we go! Try!

Get out, and I did it! Hey, it works! All right! Hey, now we can all use this part of the leg! Hooray!

So now what do you want to do? More bucket rides, please! Sure thing, Bob! Okay, all right, what should we do differently? Maybe we can remember where all the rocks are, and that way you can just go around them.

Yeah, okay. Let’s see. There’s one here, and there’s another one here. And you remember this one, right? Can you see it? I’m sitting on it! Yep!

Oh, out here! Okay, that’s a start. Let’s see how you do, Bob. Yeah, yeah, okay, let me try it. Okay, you think you can remember, Bob? I think so.

Okay, let me see. First, I start out and I go straight. There’s a rock there, so I’ve got to go slowly around in this direction. And then I think there’s one—whoa! Um, yeah, there’s one here, so I’ve got to go this way. Uh, let’s see, then there’s a rock there, so I’ve got to go—wait, though! Yeah, yeah, this way.

And then there’s a rock in front of me, so I’ve got to go—wait a minute! Was there a rock in front of me? Do I have to go this way? Is it left or is it right? I think it’s left. Well, I thought it was right. Wait, I can’t do it! It’s no use; there’s just too many rocks, and I can’t remember them all.

I guess you’re right; there are just too many rocks. Can we try again? I’m sure there’s an answer to this problem. Any idea, Zach? No, I can’t think of anything either. Should we give up? No! Well, we can’t think of an idea. You know what we say, right? Answers are everywhere! So let’s look around and see if we can come up with something to help.

All right, let’s go! Okay, let’s see. Uh, reeds! There’s a lot of reeds here, but no, I don’t think reeds are the answer. Oh, hey, it’s a rock! Wait, wait, wait! Rocks are the problem!

Hmm, what do we have here? A log? No. Let’s see. Looking for inserts swimming through the water. Hey, what’s that sticking up? It’s a—oh, it’s a stick! It’s sort of stuck into the ground there. I wonder if that could—yeah, that might work! It’s a great idea! I’m gonna tell the other Zerbies!

Hey, Zach! Hey, friend! I don’t get it. Well, we use these sticks and we stick them into the ground so that we can mark where the rocks are, and that way you don’t have to remember where they are; you can see the sticks! Yeah, what do you think? That’s a great idea! Let’s go mark the rest!

Let’s do it! Come on, Zach! I’m coming! What? He’s fast in the water! Bob, I’m coming! Wait for me!

Okay, looks like all the rocks are marked with sticks. Time to try it! Okay, there’s a rock there and a rock there. Just turn here, go around through these ones. This is easy! You guys should try this! This is fun!

Whoa! Look at this! What? Where? Look over here! Where? Over here! What? I don’t see anything! It’s a leaf! Oh! Oh, right here! Look, and it floats! Oh, yeah! It’s awfully small. Maybe if we had a lot of leaves, it might work!

Okay, yeah, let’s go! All right, come on, Rex! Okay, I’m coming! Uh, where are we going? Oh, it’s over here, right? Okay, all right! Okay, where do you want them? Just put them in the water! Yep, right there! Put them on over there! Okay, here we go! Dumping leaves!

Oh, see? They’re floating! All right! Well, I got my life jacket on. I’m gonna see if they’ll take my weight! Okay, all right, here I go! Okay, yeah! Hey! I don’t think it’s working! Yeah, the leaves, they kind of just all floated away. I can’t get on them.

Um, Zach, I don’t think you could make a raft from leaves. Now I’m not on any leaves. I think we have to try again. Of course, we will! Now what else floats? Um, wood floats! How about I go get a great big stick? Yeah, that would be great! Thank you, Rex! You’re welcome!

All right, where do you want it? Lily, in the water, please! Okay, here it comes! Dumping!

All right, my turn! Okay, go for it, Lily! Okay, here I go! Uh, well, I’m on it, and I’m floating, but I think it’s my life jacket that’s keeping me floating. Yeah, I think we have to try again.

Maybe we need more sticks! Yeah, that’s just what I was thinking! Oh, this is awesome! We can use all these fallen branches to make a new raft! Okay, Lily, do you want these in the water? No, not yet! I think we should arrange them in a square so we can drive onto them! All right, good idea, Lily!

Got ’em straight? Yep! I’ll take it from here! Okay, they’re all in a square, and all we have to do now is tie them together. Does anyone have any string? I do! Oh, good! Great! Let’s get to work here and try this! Here, over here! Try that!

Wow, that looks awesome! Oh, let’s try it! Where do you want it, Lily? In the water, please! Okay, and there! Hey, it floats! All right! Okay, come on, Lily! Let’s see if it holds up! Yeah, okay! Here it goes! I’m on! Yay! You’re floating!

Oh, it’s very—now you could float me for a ride! Yeah, sure! All right, can I come too? I don’t know, Rex! You’re too heavy; it’s sinking! Ready, set, turbo!

Hey, it’s working! All right, Zach! Okay, extend your ramp, friend! Extending the ramp! Hey, there! We made it perfectly! Oh, the wind is still pushing me sideways, Zach!

Well, friend—whoa! Whoa! Are you still moving? Oh, I guess I’m gonna fall! I fell in the water! I’m sorry, Zach! No problem! But you know what this means? We’re trying again! Yep! Just let me come around again so I can get back onboard! I’ll meet you at the shore!

Okay, new plan! I’m ready! What else can we try? What do you need to do to drive in a straight line? You mean drive straight even though the wind is pushing me? Yeah! Hmm, let’s see. If I drive a bit into the wind like this, but still a bit towards the shore, maybe I can go in a straight line now!

Oh, yeah! Is it working? It’s working, friend! You’re going in a straight line! All right! Extending the ramp! All right, just get off of the dock and tie me up, Zach! Um, there’s a bit of a problem now, friend. What is it? We’re at the corner of the dock! I don’t think I can—well, I can’t line up because the wind will push me if I try.

Uh, well, it’s okay! Maybe I could just get off here at the corner and not fall in! Okay, careful, careful! I just—whoa! I almost made it! Almost made it! Hi! I didn’t make it! Are we trying again? Uh-huh! Hold on; I’ll come back around!

We must be able to try again and do something that lets you dock with all of this wind! Hmm… wait! I’ve got it! All right, what is it? We’ve been using the wind all wrong! I don’t understand! Watch this! Instead of fighting the wind, I should be using it to help me get where I’m going!

But Fran, you’re not lined up! You’re facing the side of the dock! Exactly! This is where I should come in from! Why? The wind is pushing me from behind, so it’s not pushing me away from the dock; it’s pushing me right towards it!

Oh, yeah! Look at that! If we land on this side of the dock, the wind pushes you against it! Even though there’s wind, we’re not going anywhere! Yes! I’m not even using my engines; the wind is keeping me right here!

Well, this is definitely the answer! And now you can get off and tie me up! Oh, yeah! I did it!

Okay, all tied up, Fran! That was fun! And now I can rest! That was a lot of driving! I’m not tired! You are the one doing all the work! What do you want to do? I’m going swimming! Will you be my swimming buddy? You got it! Ready, set, turbo!

Hey, look at me! Look at me! I’m a boat! I’m a boat! Yes, you make a very good boat! Watch me drive around in a circle!
