In the lesson “Rainy Day Adventure,” Lily and her friends explore the effects of rain as they follow water rushing down a hill, leading them to discover its source. They creatively tackle the challenge of redirecting the water to prevent it from flooding their town by building a dam and ultimately find joy in playing hide and seek, showcasing that even rainy days can lead to fun and learning.
  1. What did Lily and her friends do when it started to rain?
  2. How did they try to stop the water from going into town?
  3. What fun game did they play after solving the water problem?

Rainy Day Adventure

Good morning, everyone! Oh, look, it’s raining outside! The rain is making everything wet and shiny.

Where Does the Water Go?

Lily and her friends noticed the rainwater rushing down the hill. “Let’s see where it goes!” they said. The water was turning into a little stream, washing things away. They were curious to find out where it was all going.

Finding the Source

The friends followed the water to the top of the hill. “Look, this is where the water’s coming from!” said Lily. The rain was making a new stream that was flowing through the town and even into their parking spot!

Stopping the Water

“We need to stop the water from going into town,” said Sandy. They decided to use construction vehicles to help. “Let’s put some dirt in the way,” suggested Sandy. But the water just went around the dirt!

Building a Dam

They decided to build a bigger dam by digging a big pit. “We’re great at digging!” they said. The pit would hold the water so it wouldn’t pour down the hill.

Redirecting the Water

But the pit was filling up fast! Zack had a new idea. “Let’s move the water somewhere else,” he said. They used dirt to make the water go away from the town. It worked!

Time for Fun!

With the water problem solved, it was time to play! The friends decided to play hide and seek. Zack was really good at hiding, and Rex wanted to get better at it too.

Hide and Seek Adventures

Rex tried hiding behind rocks and covering himself with sticks and leaves, but Zack always found him. Then Rex had a great idea: he covered himself with mud to blend in with the plants. Zack couldn’t find him!

Rex, the Champion

Zack declared Rex the hide-and-seek champion of Zerbyland! They decided to find Walter to wash off all the mud. “I hope Walter uses warm water this time,” said Rex with a smile.

The End

And that’s how Lily and her friends turned a rainy day into an exciting adventure! Remember, you can have fun and learn new things, even on a rainy day!

  1. What do you like to do on a rainy day? Have you ever had an adventure like Lily and her friends?
  2. Why do you think the water went around the dirt when Sandy tried to stop it? Can you think of other ways to change the direction of water?
  3. Rex used mud to hide better during hide and seek. Can you think of other creative ways to hide or play games outside?
  1. Water Flow Experiment: Create a mini water flow experiment using a tray, some dirt, and a cup of water. Let the children build small hills and valleys with the dirt on the tray. Then, pour water from the top of the hill and observe how it flows. Ask the children to try and stop the water from reaching the end of the tray by building small dams or redirecting the water. Discuss what worked and what didn’t, and why.

  2. Nature Walk Observation: Take the children on a short walk outside after a rain shower. Encourage them to observe how water moves on the ground, where it collects, and how it affects the environment. Ask questions like, “Where does the water go after it rains?” and “What happens to the plants and soil when it rains?” Encourage them to share their observations and thoughts.

  3. Creative Storytelling: Have the children create their own story about a rainy day adventure. They can draw pictures or use toys to act out their story. Encourage them to think about how they would solve problems like stopping water from going into a town or finding a good hiding spot in a game of hide and seek. Share the stories with the class and discuss the different ideas and solutions they came up with.

[Music]

Good morning! Oh, it’s raining!

Hey, Lily, it’s raining!

Yeah, I noticed. Wow, it’s really coming down!

Look at all the water rushing down the hill.

[Music]

Come on, let’s see where it goes!

Look, it’s turning into a stream over here!

Hey, yeah, it’s washing things away. I wonder where it’s all going.

Well, come on, let’s find out!

[Music]

What is it, Lily? There was never a stream here before!

Oh yeah, look at that! That’s fun! Let’s go to the top of the hill.

Oh, okay, this way!

Come on, it’s over this way!

Oh great!

Oh look, this is where the water’s coming from! It looks like a new stream.

It must be caused by all the rain.

Look, there it goes right through town! It’s washing the road away!

Hey, there’s water in my parking spot!

We’ve got to find a way to stop this water fast!

Let’s get the construction vehicles!

Okay, let’s go!

Okay, so we have to stop the water from running down the hill.

I know! Let’s just put something in the way so it doesn’t go over the edge!

Oh, that’s a great idea, Sandy! How about some dirt?

Yeah, good thinking! Come on, let’s go!

Okay, I’m gonna move…

[Music]

That’ll stop the water!

Okay, so wait, hang on, it doesn’t seem to be stopping.

It isn’t?

Hey, look! Now the water’s just going around the dirt.

What if I put some more dirt down? I bet the water would just go around that dirt too.

I guess just putting some dirt in the way isn’t the answer. Looks like we need to try again.

What should we try next?

We could… um…

Well, what if we built it bigger? We’re kind of building a dam, right?

We could dig down and give the water somewhere to collect. We’re great at digging!

Let’s dig a great big pit!

Alright, yeah, let’s do it! But we can’t build it if the water keeps pouring in.

Don’t worry about that! Zach and I will figure something out.

First, we’ll have to block the water from going where they’re working.

Um, okay, Lily, help me push this rock!

Okay!

There! That will push the water over the side so it’s not coming down where they’re working.

Alright, let’s go see how they’re doing!

Yeah!

Hey, I think we almost got this problem figured out! Come on!

[Music]

I don’t get it. How will this work?

Well, see, the water will come down here, right?

Yeah, but now instead of pouring down the hill, it will fill up the big pit we dug.

Oh, this is a great pit! It’s bigger than me!

Oh, I get it! So it kind of holds the water so it won’t pour down the hill!

Exactly! I’ll go move the rock so the water will come down this way again.

Okay, now to just push this rock out of the way here…

[Music]

Okay, here comes the water!

[Applause]

It’s stopping the water from going into town! It’s working great! Yay!

Let’s celebrate!

Uh, hold on a second. What’s wrong, Zack?

The dam works, but the water’s filling it up fast!

Oh yeah, it looks pretty full. What happens when it gets to the top?

It spills over and the dam breaks, and a ton of water washes over Zerbytown!

Let’s go look for answers!

[Music]

Let’s see, what do we got? Oh, leaves! No, this won’t work.

Hey, what’s up?

That might… no, I don’t think moss is gonna solve the problem.

Oh well, let’s go see what’s over here.

Let’s see… oh, it’s a stream again! No, I can’t use that.

Oh wait a minute! The stream! Rex! Lily! Come quick!

Huh? What’s going on?

Yeah, what’s up, Zack?

Remember when we moved the rock in the way of the water?

Yeah?

Well, when we did that, the water didn’t go down this part of the hill. It kind of went down over here.

I don’t get it.

Why don’t we build something to move the water even farther so it washes way over there where it won’t go through town?

Well, that’s a great idea!

Hey, I’ll get some dirt!

Do you think moving the water will be easier than trying to hold the water in a dam?

I don’t know, but I think so!

Okay, here comes the first load!

Look! There! Great! A few more loads and it just might work!

There we go!

We did it!

Yay!

Alright! Now instead of going straight down the hill, the water’s washing over there, away from town!

Well, I guess I’ll just have to park in water from now on.

Oh hey, it stopped!

What do we do with this dam?

Well, now that the water’s going somewhere else, it should be just fine.

Yeah, but what do we do with it?

Oh, I think we should play in it!

You guys should be smaller!

[Music]

Guys!

[Music]

Oh!

[Music]

I found you, Rex!

Go away!

I don’t know how you do it, Zack.

I’m just good at hide and seek, I guess.

Ah, I love hide and seek, but I sure wish I was better at hiding.

Well, just keep practicing, buddy. Do you want to be it this time?

Oh, okay! You go hide and I’ll count to ten!

Oh, okay!

One, two, three, four, five…

Let’s see…

This is great!

[Music]

Are you over here, Zack?

Oh my!

It’s the last thing I do!

Uh, Zack?

Okay, I give up! I’m right here!

What? The whole time? I can’t believe it!

Yeah, I was just behind this rock!

Wow, you’re really good at hiding!

Oh, it’s easy if you find a good hiding spot!

You want to try again?

Oh, okay, great!

I’ll go over to the tree and start counting. I’m pretty sure I can get a good spot this time, Zack!

Okay, I’m gonna count now. You ready?

One, two, three, four…

Okay, I’m gonna get in here!

[Music]

[Laughter]

Um, I found you!

Oh, what?

Oh, I can’t believe you found me so quickly!

Couldn’t you find a good hiding spot?

That was my hiding spot!

Oh well, I can still see you! Your yellow paint job was sticking out behind the rock there!

No, I guess…

Hey, this time I’m gonna get a disguise so you won’t even recognize me!

Oh, good idea, Rex!

Okay, okay, I’m gonna go look around and see what I can find!

Oh, I love disguises! Can I come too?

Uh-uh, no way! It has to be a secret!

Oh, right! Gotcha!

Okay, I’ll be right here just looking at this rock.

Look at this! It’s a neat rock! It just sort of looks like that…

Uh, okay, let’s see…

This rock?

Uh, no!

Hey, wait a minute! I could cover myself with sticks!

Oh, this’ll work for sure!

Eight, nine, ten! Where are you?

Not here! I come!

I’ve gotta find you because I’m the best hide-and-seek player in the whole forest!

And I can perfect this disguise!

Uh, Rex?

What?

I can see you, Rex!

You can?

I thought the disguise was perfect!

Well, I can still see a lot of yellow! Those sticks don’t cover you that well!

Oh, I guess I’ve got to make sure I’m completely covered!

Oh, okay, Zack, you know what? Let’s try again!

Okay, Rex, you want me to go count again?

Yep!

Okay!

Okay, let’s see… what should I…

Hey, look at all the leaves!

Oh wait! Leaves! Leaves will cover me completely! They’ll cover all my yellow!

That’s perfect!

[Music]

Eight, nine, ten! Ready or not, here I come!

I’ve got to find you this time, Rex!

But I’m still gonna find you!

[Music]

[Laughter]

Nice try, Rex! You almost had me there!

Two about half your disguise blew away!

Well, it was good for a minute until the wind decided to blow!

I know I can find a disguise that will make you give up, Zack! I can! I just need to find something that will cover all of me and stay that way!

Well, there’s only one thing to do, right?

Right!

Again!

You want me to count again?

Yeah! You count!

No, go look!

Okay, here I go!

One, two…

Oh, look at that! I love mud! But this is not the time to play in the mud! I’ve got to find a…

Hey, wait a minute! That’s it! Mud! I can cover myself with mud! It will cover all my shiny yellow paint!

Just do a little bit of this, a little bit of that…

Oh, this is gonna be great!

Here I come!

I’m gonna find you, Rex, because I am the best finder!

And you can…

I found me!

[Music]

Oh no! Those are just yellow leaves!

I thought that was you for sure!

I don’t know, Rex…

Uh, I give up! Come out, come out, wherever you are!

I’m right here!

Wow! Rocks! That’s an amazing disguise!

It is, isn’t it?

Uh, you couldn’t find me because I was camouflaged! The mud helped me blend in with the plants!

I now declare you, Rex, the official hide-and-seek champion of Zerbyland!

Oh, right!

So what do you want to do now? You want me to find you?

No, I think we should try to find Walter!

Walter? What for?

So he can wash all that mud off you!

Okay, good idea! Come on, let’s go this way!

I can’t believe you couldn’t find me!

I couldn’t! I couldn’t see you at all! Did you let me win?

No, I didn’t! I could not see you! You were amazing!

Because you’re such a good finder!

Well, you’re a good hider!

Now I hope Walter uses warm water this time!

Oh yeah!
