In the lesson “Let’s Have Fun with Zerbies!”, the Zerbies engage in various building and problem-solving activities, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and creativity. They learn valuable lessons through their adventures, such as how to work together to escape a stuck situation, effectively manage water flow during a rainstorm, and design the perfect racetrack. Ultimately, the Zerbies discover that collaboration and simplicity often lead to the best solutions and the most fun.
  1. What did the Zerbies build that looked like a giant cereal bowl?
  2. How did the Zerbies work together to get out of the bowl?
  3. What did the Zerbies learn about making their racetrack?

Let’s Have Fun with Zerbies!

Building a Big Bowl

Once upon a time, the Zerbies, who love to build and explore, decided to dig a big bowl in the ground. It looked like a giant cereal bowl! They thought it would be fun to drive around in it.

Driving in the Bowl

The Zerbies took turns driving in the bowl. It was so much fun! But when they all went in at once, they got stuck. How would they get out?

Working Together

One Zerby had a great idea: they could line up and push each other out! They worked together, and soon everyone was out of the bowl. Teamwork is awesome!

Rainy Day Adventure

One day, it started raining, and water rushed down the hill, making a new stream. The water was washing away the road in Zerby Town!

Stopping the Water

The Zerbies needed to stop the water. They tried using dirt to block it, but the water just went around. Then, they decided to dig a big pit to catch the water. It worked, but the pit filled up fast!

Building a Bridge

Later, the Zerbies found a ditch that was hard to cross. They decided to build a bridge using big sticks. The first sticks broke, but the bigger sticks worked perfectly!

Creating a Racetrack

The Zerbies found a big meadow and decided to build a racetrack. At first, it was just a straight line, but that was too short. Then, they made it too complicated with lots of turns.

The Perfect Racetrack

Finally, they made a simple circle track. It was just right! Everyone raced around and had a blast. The Zerbies learned that sometimes simple is best!

Learning and Exploring

The Zerbies love to learn and explore. They find answers everywhere and always work together to solve problems. What a fun adventure!

  • Have you ever built something with your friends or family, like the Zerbies did with their big bowl? What did you build, and how did you work together?
  • When the Zerbies got stuck in the bowl, they used teamwork to get out. Can you think of a time when you worked with others to solve a problem? What did you do?
  • The Zerbies learned that sometimes simple solutions work best, like their circle racetrack. Can you think of a time when a simple idea worked better than a complicated one?
  1. Build Your Own Bowl: Gather some sand or soil in a sandbox or garden. With the help of an adult, dig a big bowl shape in the ground. Imagine you’re a Zerby and drive toy cars around the bowl. What happens when you put too many cars in? Try to work together to get them out, just like the Zerbies did!

  2. Rainy Day Experiment: On a rainy day or using a watering can, create a small stream in the garden or sandbox. Use different materials like leaves, small stones, or sticks to try and stop the water from flowing. What works best? Can you build a little bridge over the stream using sticks like the Zerbies?

  3. Design a Racetrack: Use chalk to draw a racetrack on the sidewalk or driveway. Start with a simple circle, then try adding some turns. Which track is more fun to race on? Why do you think the Zerbies liked the simple circle track best?

Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript, removing any unnecessary or repetitive elements while maintaining the essence of the conversation:

[Music]

The construction Zerbies have finished digging the ball! Everyone’s going to check it out. Do you think it looks like a bowl for cereal? It does look amazing!

Hey, what’s spinning? Hi everybody! Hi, Zachi! How’s it going? Thanks, this is the bus group right here.

What’s the difference between a ball and a hole? It’s pretty much still a hole, but all the sides are shallow, so it looks like a bowl. We just thought it would be fun to build.

I bet it would be fun to drive!

[Music]

That was so much fun, Zack! You should try it!

Let’s go!

[Music]

I guess we should have taken turns before we all came down here at once. Now that we’re down here, how do we get out?

Axl, it’s easy! You just go straight up.

I’ll give you a push. Okay, we can go up the sides like Axl did before.

Well, I was going really fast when I drove through, but now I don’t know if I have enough room to get going fast.

We’ll just have to try again. Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh, I do! What if we all got in a line and helped push each other out?

That sounds good!

[Music]

Take a break! Do you have enough room now to drive up the side?

I can’t see. I can’t do it! I just can’t get going fast enough.

We’ll just have to try again. It’s all about getting enough speed. Maybe we can find a way to go faster.

Great idea! But I’ve tried everything. Let’s look around and see if we can come up with an idea.

[Music]

There’s gotta be something we can do.

Maybe there’s something over here. What about this way?

Actually, you’re going pretty fast!

What’s going on? That wasn’t too hard!

User B should try it!

How do we do it?

I’ll show you! It’s easy! You just go round and round until you’re going fast enough to get out.

Okay, let’s try!

[Music]

You know what that means? We get to go back in!

Oh yeah!

Over here, but you know what? Everyone should still take turns; it’s pretty crowded in here.

[Music]

Wow, it’s raining! Look at all the water rushing down the hill!

Come on, let’s see where it goes. It’s turning into a stream over here.

Look, this is where the water’s coming from! It looks like a new stream; it must be caused by all the rain.

Look, there it goes right through town! It’s washing all the road away!

Hey, there’s water in my parking spot! We’ve gotta find a way to stop this water, and fast!

Let’s get the construction Zerbies!

Okay, so we have to stop the water from running down the hill. I know! Let’s put something in the way so it doesn’t go over the edge.

That’s a great idea, Sandy! How about some dirt?

Come on, let’s go!

[Music]

That’ll stop the water!

Wait, hang on. It doesn’t seem to be stopping.

Hey, look! Now the water’s just going around the dirt. What if I put some more dirt down?

I bet the water would just go around that too.

I guess just putting some dirt in the way isn’t the answer. What should we try next?

Well, what if we built it bigger? We’re kind of building a dam, right? We could dig down and give the water somewhere to collect.

We’re great at digging! Let’s take a great big pit!

But we can’t build it if the water keeps pouring in.

Don’t worry about that! Zack and I will figure something out.

[Music]

There! That will push the water over the side so it’s not coming down where they’re working.

I don’t get it; how will this work?

See, the water will come down here, but instead of pouring down the hill, this great pit holds the water so it won’t pour down the hill.

Exactly!

I’ll go move the rock so the water will come down this way again.

Okay, now to just push this rock out of the way.

It’s working!

Okay, let’s celebrate!

Hold on a second.

What’s wrong, Zack?

That dam works, but the water is filling it up fast!

Oh yeah? What happens when it gets to the top?

It spills over, and the dam breaks, and a ton of water washes over Zerby Town!

Let’s go look for answers!

[Music]

I don’t think monsters should have solved the problem.

Oh, it’s the stream again!

Who’s that?

Oh, wait a minute!

The stream! Billy, come quick! Move the rock in the way of the water!

Yeah, well when we did that, the water didn’t go down this part of the hill.

How do we get it to go over here?

I don’t get it.

Why don’t we build something to move the water even farther so it washes way over there where it won’t go through town?

Whoa, that’s a great idea!

Get some dirt! It will be easier than trying to hold the water with a dam.

I don’t know, but I think so!

Great!

There we go! Now instead of going straight down the hill, the water’s washing over there, away from town.

Well, I guess I’ll just have to park in water from now on.

Hey, it stopped! What do we do with this dam?

Now that the water’s going somewhere else, it should be just fine.

Yeah, but what do we do with it?

Oh, I think we should…

[Music]

I am out exploring!

He really moves fast!

Max, is that you?

Oh hey, I didn’t see you there! What’s going on?

I want to show you something!

Okay, what is it? Did you build something?

I’m not telling you; you gotta come and see!

Well, come on!

What is it?

It’s a jump!

You’ll see!

I stand all the way around!

Come on!

What is it?

It’s a ditch!

A ditch? But what’s it for?

It’s for driving through!

Oh, can I give it a try?

Sure, go ahead!

Try it!

Okay!

Hi, Spike! What are you guys up to?

Oh, Rex is just showing me a ditch that he built.

Oh, Spike, are you okay?

Hey, did you Zerbies?

No, there is a ditch here!

Well, just get yourself back on your wheels and drive out!

Oh, okay, okay!

Do I go this way?

Yeah, just keep going till you get out!

But I think it might be a problem for some Zerbies.

We might need a way to get across this ditch.

Yeah, that won’t happen again.

Maybe you’re right.

Okay, let’s find a way for Zerbies to get across this ditch.

Maybe we should make a bridge!

Okay, but first we should help Spike!

[Music]

You know there’s a ditch here!

Okay, there!

Lily, Cece, look at that!

Okay, so how are we gonna do this?

Oh, it’s easy! I’m just gonna fill the ditch with dirt right here in the middle so the Zerbies can get across!

Oh, that’s a great idea!

Okay, here I go!

[Music]

A few more loads ought to do it!

Okay, let’s get more dirt!

And dumping just a little!

Oh hey, you put this here!

It’s a bridge!

But I wanted to drive through the ditch!

The ditch is so much fun!

Oh yeah, I guess the dirt here makes it hard to drive through the ditch.

Yeah, I didn’t think of that.

Looks like we’ll have to…

Do you see anything?

No, nothing but my best buddies!

Oh wait, what about this stick?

What?

Yeah, that would…

I don’t get it.

Well, I’m thinking maybe we can put this stick across the ditch like a bridge!

Bridge? You’re a genius, Rex!

But we’re gonna need two sticks because we have wheels on both sides.

Oh, good point! Let’s find another stick just like this one!

Okay, my pleasure!

See you later!

Ready for the stairs?

[Music]

Look at these sticks! I think they might be too small!

Guys, look! There’s a bridge!

Oh, can I drive across?

I think this takes a too-small spike!

Oh no, the sticks are fine! They’re gonna break, Spike!

No, they won’t!

Hey, the sticks broke!

Told you!

Looks like we’ll have to try again!

Need help, Spike?

Yeah, answers are everywhere!

Not here!

Oh wait, what about the leaves and the stems on that willow bush in front of us?

What do you think, Zack?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that’s the right solution.

Well, really, they kind of look…

Facing green and me, we could…

Yeah, I think we should probably move on.

Okay, maybe you’re right.

We gotta figure something out!

Oh hey, wait! What about this big stick over here?

Stick? It’s over here!

I still don’t see it!

It’s just right here!

Right there!

Oh yeah!

Hey, Zack, look! A stick!

Huh?

Yeah!

Okay, Rex, look! The last sticks broke because they were too small, right?

Oh yeah!

So if we use bigger sticks like this one, maybe they’ll be strong enough!

Oh, big sticks are stronger!

That’s smart!

But you know what we’re gonna need?

Right! Two sticks!

Okay, we gotta find a second one just like this one!

Okay!

Let’s try this again!

Come on!

Do you think they’ll break?

No, they look pretty strong!

Okay, here goes!

Careful!

What’s going on?

We built a bridge!

Yeah, works great!

Wow, a bridge!

Can I try?

Kind of faster!

Yeah, I guess I need some practice!

Are you kidding? You’re much faster than me!

So that’s why I need…

Oh, look! What’s that over there?

What?

Hey, you trying to pull a fast one yet again?

Well, you have speedy wheels like that! You have to give me a head start!

Whoa! Hey, look at that!

Look, beautiful!

We’ve never been in this meadow before!

[Music]

Why don’t we check it out?

Okay, it’s so big!

Yeah, well, what do you think we can do?

Yeah, we should build something here!

How about a racetrack?

That would be a lot of fun for the racers!

Yeah, then I can design it!

I’m really good at racing, so I bet I’m really good at making racetracks!

A whole racetrack from scratch?

Oh, this will be great!

All right, let’s do it!

Okay, and then we can get all the other racers to come over here!

What kind of racetrack do you want to make?

I want to make the fastest racetrack ever!

The fastest? Why am I not surprised by that?

Yeah, the way I see it, the faster you go, the more fun it is!

Now watch me carefully and tell me when I’m going the fastest!

Okay, you got it!

Okay, go!

[Music]

Okay, all right! Now I’m gonna go around again!

Okay, now check this out! Now go in a straight line!

Okay, so which one was the fastest?

When you were going in a straight line!

Definitely!

Yeah, I felt that too!

So that means the fastest racecourse should be a straight line!

Okay, let’s put it together!

All right, thanks for coming, fellow racers!

Look at this! I’ve just made my very own race course!

Oh cool, I love it!

Okay, this is the start, and I wanted this to be the most fun race course ever!

And I figured that nothing is more fun than going fast, so it’s just a straight line from here to the end over there!

Oh, so it’s just straight?

Yep! Fun, right?

All right, come on everybody! Get ready!

Okay!

Okay, we’re all set!

Yeah, ready!

[Music]

It’s over already?

Yeah, you know what? That was pretty short!

I thought it would be more fun!

I’m no racer, but I think the fun of a race course is doing all kinds of different things—turns, straightaways!

You know, you’re right!

Maybe I just need to try again, and this time I’m gonna put lots of everything!

Axl!

Yeah?

Okay, here’s the new and improved course!

Much harder than the first!

This one requires focus and skill!

Okay, first we start here, and then we go around these sticks three times, then left around that stick, then reverse into that parking lot, and then two donuts, then up that hill over there, over those rocks, and then down there by the daisies!

Smell those daisies and then cross the finish line!

How many times around the sticks?

Can you repeat that, Turbo?

[Music]

You’re doing it wrong!

Everybody’s going all over the place!

Kind of confused!

This course didn’t work either!

I might have put too much stuff in!

I think you should try again!

Okay, but what should I do this time?

Well, um, let’s look around!

Answers are everywhere!

Okay, yeah!

I could put the pine needles in the…

No, I don’t think they’re gonna work!

All right, your ankle!

I wonder if a pine cone will make my racecourse better!

No, probably not!

I’ve looked over there, and I’ve looked over here, and I’ve looked over there again!

I don’t know! I just feel like I’m going in circles!

Oh, that’s it!

Maybe you should just make one path that goes around but doesn’t go over itself!

Like a circle?

Yeah, a circle would work!

Okay, I’ll try that!

Hey everyone, come on over here!

We’re gonna try something else!

Okay!

Okay, all right!

Yeah, let’s look at this one!

Why should we take notes?

Do I need my compass?

No, no! You don’t need anything!

This one is much easier!

Okay, you see that? It’s just a big circle!

You just go around and then you end up where we started!

Now you’re speaking a language I can understand!

You know what? I think we should go around three times!

Oh, I can’t wait! Let’s race!

Okay, everyone ready?

[Music]

So what’s going on? Why aren’t you racing?

Well, I have to look around!

If I’m racing, I wanted to see everyone driving on my race course!

Do you think they’re having fun?

I think so!

You two, Max! That was fun!

Axl, this is a terrific track!

Well, thanks!

Great work, Ray! You won the race, and that means you get a prize!

I do? What’s the prize?

Well, you get to race again!

[Music]

And if anybody gets dizzy, we can just go the other way!

[Music]
