In today’s lesson, we joined Zach, Chase, Axel, Lily, and Rex on an exciting adventure where they explored a newly dug bowl and learned about teamwork and problem-solving. When rain threatened to wash away their road, they collaborated to build a dam and ultimately devised a clever solution to redirect the water safely away from town. The key takeaway was that by working together and trying new ideas, they could overcome challenges while having fun!
  1. What did our friends build to stop the water?
  2. Why is it important to take turns when playing?
  3. What can we do when something doesn’t work the first time?

Let’s Explore and Have Fun!

Hi there, friend! Today, we’re going on a fun adventure with our friends Zach, Chase, Axel, Lily, and Rex. Are you ready? Let’s go!

What’s a Bowl?

One sunny morning, Zach and Chase heard a strange noise. It wasn’t an engine; it was their friend Chase! He told them that the construction crew had finished digging a bowl, and everyone was excited to check it out. But wait, what is a bowl? Is it like a cereal bowl? Let’s find out!

When they got there, they saw something amazing! It looked like a big, round bowl in the ground. Rex explained that it’s like a hole, but with shallow sides, making it look like a bowl. They thought it would be fun to drive in it!

Driving Fun!

Axel decided to try driving in the bowl. He went round and round, and it was so much fun! Everyone wanted to try it too. But when they all went in at once, they realized they needed to take turns. Oops!

Getting out of the bowl was tricky. Axel showed them how to go fast and drive up the sides. They tried and tried, and finally, they all made it out! Yay!

Oh No, It’s Raining!

Suddenly, it started raining. The rain made a stream of water rush down the hill. The water was washing away the road, and they needed to stop it quickly!

Building a Dam

Our friends decided to build a dam to stop the water. They used dirt to block the water, but it didn’t work. The water just went around the dirt. They needed a new plan!

Let’s Try Again!

They thought about digging a big pit to catch the water. Zach and Lily moved a rock to change the water’s path. The water filled the pit, and it worked! But the pit was filling up fast. What would happen if it overflowed?

A New Idea!

Zach had a great idea! Instead of holding the water, they could move it away from town. They built a path with dirt to guide the water somewhere safe. It worked perfectly!

Time to Play!

With the water problem solved, our friends decided to play in the empty dam. They had so much fun together!

What Did We Learn?

Today, we learned about teamwork and problem-solving. When things don’t work the first time, we can try new ideas and work together to find a solution. And most importantly, we had lots of fun!

Thanks for joining us on this adventure. See you next time!

  • What do you think it would be like to drive in a big bowl like Zach and his friends did? Have you ever tried something new that was a little tricky at first?
  • When Zach and his friends had to stop the water, they tried different ideas until they found one that worked. Can you think of a time when you had to solve a problem by trying different things?
  • Why do you think it’s important to work together as a team like Zach, Lily, and their friends did? Can you share a time when you worked with others to do something fun or solve a problem?
  1. Build Your Own Bowl: Gather some sand or dirt in a sandbox or a garden. Use your hands or small tools to dig a shallow, round hole that looks like a bowl. Once you’ve made your bowl, try rolling a small ball or toy car around the inside. Can you make it go round and round like Axel did? Talk about what happens when you push the ball or car faster or slower.

  2. Rainy Day Experiment: On a rainy day, or using a watering can, observe how water flows on the ground. Try creating small paths or channels with sticks or stones to guide the water. Can you make the water go where you want it to? Discuss how Zach and Lily changed the water’s path and how you can do the same.

  3. Teamwork Challenge: With a group of friends or family, try building a small dam using blocks or other materials. Work together to stop a small stream of water (you can use a hose or a cup of water). If it doesn’t work the first time, think of new ways to improve your dam. Talk about how working together can help solve problems, just like Zach and his friends did.

Wow! Did I tell you the time that I spun my tire and it got everywhere? Really? Hey Zach, is that you? What’s that noise? Is it your engine? No, it’s not my engine. Oh, it must be Chase! Hi Chase, over here! Hi everyone, how’s it going this fine morning? Hi Chase, what’s up?

The construction crew has finished digging the bowl, and everybody’s going to check it out! Wow! Oh, see you later, fellas! Bye!

Wait, what’s a bowl? I don’t know, let’s go find out! Do you think it’s like a bowl for cereal or something? I don’t think it’s that kind of bowl. Is it this way? Oh no, I can’t see through your tire. Oh, that one! Okay, good!

Oh, there it is! Wow, spinning spark plugs! It’s amazing! It does look like a bowl.

Hey everyone! Hi Zach! Hi! How’s it going? Good work, Rex! Thanks! This is the last scoop right here. Thank you!

So what’s the difference between a bowl and a hole? Oh, it’s pretty much still a hole, but all the sides are shallow, so it sort of looks like a bowl. Uh-huh. So what’s it for? I don’t know, we just thought it would be fun to build.

You know, I bet it would be fun to drive! You think so? Yeah, watch this!

All right, Axel, that was great! Totally! I didn’t see it! Hey Zach, Rex, did you see that? That was amazing! Axel, do it again!

All right, here we go! Did you see how far? Yes, I did! Oh, what are we looking at? What’s going on, Spike? This way!

Wow, that was so much fun! Zach, you should try it! Yeah, let’s go! Come on!

[Music]

Awesome, everybody! Hello!

Wait, guys, I guess we should have taken turns before we all came down here at once. But now that we’re down here, how do we get out?

Axel, oh, um, it’s easy! You just go straight up the sides like I did before. Okay, woohoo! Yeah, go Axel, you can do it!

Oh yeah, come on! I couldn’t get out! That’s weird. Let me try!

Okay, here we go! No, I can’t get any traction! I’ll help you, Lily! I’ll give you a push!

Okay, pushing! Oh yeah, great! Okay, this is the one! This is it! No, it’s not working! Huh, why can’t we go up the sides like Axel did before?

Well, before I was going really fast when I drove through, but now I don’t even know if I have enough room to get going really fast.

Okay, we’ll just have to try again. Does anyone have any ideas?

No, I do! Oh, go ahead, Lily!

What if we all got in a line and then we could all help push each other out? Oh, that sounds good! Okay, everyone, get in a line!

[Music]

Okay, is everybody ready? Okay, so we’re all going to push!

[Music]

Ready? Keep pushing!

It’s really hard with less! I guess there’s not enough of us left to push.

Okay, everyone, let’s take a break!

Hey, do you have enough room now to drive up the sides? I can’t see!

Oh, good idea, Jewel! I’m going to try driving out!

[Music]

Come on! I can’t do it! I just can’t get it going fast enough!

Well, we’ll just have to try again. But what will we do differently?

Well, it’s all about getting up enough speed, so maybe we can find a way to go faster!

Oh, great idea, Lily! But I’ve tried everything!

But what do we say when we’re stuck?

So let’s look around and maybe we can come up with an idea!

Oh, okay!

[Music]

Okay, I have an idea! Usually, this works!

Well, there’s got to be something we can do!

Well, maybe there’s something over here!

Hey, hey, what about this way?

Hey, this is fun! Actually, you’re going pretty fast!

I am going fast! This is great! Woohoo! Keep going fast and then turn and go out this side!

Okay, that’s a great idea! Here I go!

[Music]

He did it! What’s going on?

Hey, that wasn’t so hard! You should try it!

How do we do it?

I’ll show you! It’s easy! You just go round and round and round until you’re going fast enough to get out!

Okay, let’s try!

[Music]

It’s working now! Now you turn and go up the side!

I did it! I did it! Here I come!

Sorry, Zach, I caught you!

I saw it! I saw the whole thing! That was great!

We did it! We made it out of the bowl!

Well, you know what that means!

What?

It means we get to go back in!

Oh yeah! Ready, set, turbo!

Yeah, you go! Oh, sorry, I’m in your way! I’ll back over here and then you can…

You know what? Everybody, we should still take turns! It’s pretty crowded in here!

[Music]

Good morning, everyone!

Oh, it’s raining!

Wow, it’s really coming down!

Yeah, look at all the water rushing down the hill! Come on, let’s see where it goes!

Look, it’s turning into a stream over here!

Hey, yeah, it’s washing the road away!

I wonder where it’s all going!

Well, come on, let’s find out!

What is it, Lily?

There was never a stream here before!

Oh yeah, look at that! That’s fun! Let’s go to the top of the hill!

Oh, okay, this way! Come on, it’s over this way!

Oh great! Oh look, this is where the water’s coming from! It looks like a new stream!

It must be caused by all the rain!

Look, there it goes right through town! It’s washing all the road away!

Hey, there’s water in my parking spot! We’ve got to find a way to stop this water and fast!

Let’s get the construction crew!

Okay, so we have to stop the water from running down the hill!

I know! Let’s just put something in the way so it doesn’t go over the edge!

Oh, that’s a great idea, Sandy!

How about some dirt?

Yeah, good thinking! Come on, let’s go!

Okay, I’m going to move some dirt over here, and then you guys can move some dirt over there!

Hold me up!

Some there you go!

Okay, far the back, Rex! And dump!

[Music]

Dumping! Awesome! That’ll stop the water!

Okay, so wait, hang on! It doesn’t seem to be stopping!

It isn’t?

Hey, look! Now the water’s just going around the dirt!

What if I put some more dirt down? I bet the water would just go around that dirt too!

I guess just putting some dirt in the way isn’t the answer!

Looks like we need to try again!

What should we try next?

We could… um… go on!

Well, what if we built it bigger? We’re kind of building a dam, right?

We could dig down and give the water somewhere to collect!

We’re great at digging! Let’s dig a great big pit!

All right, yeah, let’s do it!

But we can’t build it if the water keeps pouring in!

Don’t worry about that! Zach and I will figure something out!

First, we’ll have to block the water from going where they’re working!

Um, okay! Lily, help me push this rock!

Okay!

[Music]

Ready? There! That will push the water over the side a bit so it’s not coming down where they’re working!

All right, let’s go see how they’re doing!

Yeah! Hey, I think we almost got this problem figured out!

Come on!

Okay, put some over here, one there!

I’ve got… need any more dirt?

‘Cause I can!

Amazing! Tada! A dam!

I don’t get it! How will this work?

Well, see, the water will come down here, right?

Yeah, but now instead of pouring down the hill, it will fill up the big pit we’ve dug!

Oh, this is a great pit! It’s bigger than me!

Oh, I get it! So it kind of holds the water so it won’t pour down the hill!

Exactly! I’ll go move the rock so the water will come down this way again!

Okay, now to just push this rock out of the way!

Here, almost on there!

Okay, here comes the water!

We did it! It’s stopping the water from going into town!

It’s working great! Yay, let’s celebrate!

Uh, hold on a second!

What’s wrong, Zach?

The dam works, but the water’s filling it up fast!

Oh yeah, it looks pretty full!

What happens when it gets to the top?

It spills over and the dam breaks, and a ton of water washes over Zerby Town!

Let’s go look for answers!

Excuse me!

Okay, let’s see what we got!

Oh, leaves! No, this won’t work!

Moving on!

Hey, hey, what’s up here?

Moss? That might… no, I don’t think moss is going to solve the problem!

Well, let’s go see what’s over here!

Let’s see… oh, it’s a stream again! Now I can’t use that!

Oh, wait a minute! The stream! Rex, Lily, come quick!

Huh? What’s going on?

Yeah, what’s up, Zach?

Remember when we moved the rock in the way of the water?

Yeah! Well, when we did that, the water didn’t go down this part of the hill! It kind of went down over here!

I don’t get it! Why?

Why don’t we build something to move the water even farther so it washes way over there where it won’t go through town?

Wow, that’s a great idea!

Hey, I’ll get some dirt!

Do you think moving the water will be easier than trying to hold the water in a dam?

I don’t know, but I think so!

Okay, here comes the first load!

Jumping!

There! Great! A few more loads and it just might work!

There we go! We did it! Yay!

All right! Now instead of going straight down the hill, the water’s washing over there, away from town!

Well, I guess I’ll just have to park in water from now on!

Oh, hey, it stopped!

What do we do with this dam?

Well, now that the water’s going somewhere else, it should be just fine!

Yeah, but what do we do with it?

Oh, I think we should play in it!

Turbo!

Hey, I fit in here perfectly!

You guys should be small!

Got to move, buddy!

Okay, there you go! Now it’s your turn!

I can’t still get in!

Guys, you’re still… I’m staying!

I’m staying for a while anyway, guys!
