In the lesson “Welcome to Zerby Town,” children learn about problem-solving and teamwork through the adventures of the Zerby friends. They explore concepts like erosion while cleaning, find creative solutions to stay cool in the sun, and discover the importance of collaboration when building a strong ramp. The overarching message emphasizes that trying again and working together can lead to fun and successful outcomes.
  1. What did Walter do to help Goldie feel clean?
  2. How did the Zerbies work together to fix the water problem?
  3. What did the Zerbies learn about trying again when something doesn’t work?

Welcome to Zerby Town!

Hi there! Today, we’re going to have some fun with our friends in Zerby Town. Let’s see what they’re up to!

Cleaning Up with Walter

Walter is busy cleaning his friends. Goldie doesn’t like being dirty, so Walter makes sure to wash all the dirt away. Zack wants his sack washed too, but he has to wait for Goldie to finish first. Water from the Zerby wash is making the dirt go away, and that’s called “eroding.” It’s like magic!

Fixing the Zerby Wash

Oh no! The water is washing away too much dirt. But don’t worry, our Zerby friends have a plan. They dig a big hole to catch the water so it doesn’t wash away the dirt. They test it out, and it works! But the hole fills up fast, so they have to think of another way to fix it.

Staying Cool in the Sun

It’s a hot day, and the Zerbies need to stay cool. Walter uses a big leaf for shade. Did you know umbrellas can give you shade from the sun too? They call them “sunbrellas!” But when they try to race with the sunbrellas, they slow down because the wind catches them. Oh no!

Finding Shade to Race

The Zerbies realize they can race in the shade of the trees. It’s much cooler there, and they can go fast without getting hot. Yay! They learn that sometimes you have to try, try again to find the best solution.

Building a Strong Ramp

The Zerbies want to build a ramp to climb a big log. They try using sand, but it keeps falling down. Then, they have a great idea! Wet sand holds together better, so they use water to make the ramp strong. It works, and they can climb the log!

Teamwork Makes It Fun

Rex and Zack work together to move sand and make the sandpit bigger. They use a piece of bark as a scoop to carry the sand. Lily and Spike join in to help too. It’s so much fun when everyone works together!

Being Creative and Trying Again

In Zerby Town, our friends learn that if something doesn’t work the first time, they can always try, try again. They look for answers everywhere and use their creativity to solve problems. It’s all about having fun and working together!

Let’s Play and Learn!

Now that you’ve seen how the Zerbies solve problems and have fun, you can try it too! Remember, answers are everywhere, and teamwork makes everything better. Have fun exploring and learning new things!

  • Have you ever helped clean something, like your toys or your room? How did it feel when everything was clean and tidy?
  • Can you think of a time when you had to try something more than once to get it right, like the Zerbies did? What did you learn from trying again?
  • When playing outside on a sunny day, where do you like to find shade? Why do you think it’s important to stay cool in the sun?
  1. Water Erosion Experiment: Let’s explore how water can move dirt! Take a small tray and fill it with sand or soil. Use a cup to gently pour water over the sand and watch what happens. Can you see the sand moving? This is similar to what happened in Zerby Town when the water washed away the dirt. Try changing the amount of water or the angle of the tray to see how it affects the movement of the sand.

  2. Build Your Own Shade: Just like Walter used a big leaf for shade, let’s make our own “sunbrella.” Use materials like paper, sticks, or fabric to create a small umbrella. Take it outside on a sunny day and see how it creates shade. Can you find other objects that make good shade? Try racing a toy car with and without the shade to see if it slows down like the Zerbies’ sunbrellas did!

  3. Teamwork Challenge: Gather some friends or family members and work together to build a small ramp using blocks or books. Just like the Zerbies, try using different materials to make it strong. Can you make a ramp that a toy car can climb? Remember, if it doesn’t work the first time, try again and see what changes make it better. Talk about how working together made the task easier and more fun!

Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

[Music]

Make sure you get all the dirt off, Walter. I don’t like being dirty.

No problem, Goldie. Here you go.

Hi, Walter!

Hi, Bonnie! Lovely!

Oh, hi, Zack! I can wash your sack, but first you have to wait for Goldie to be done.

Oh, no problem, Walter.

Hey, all the water is coming from this Zerby wash!

Well, look at that! The water’s making the dirt erode.

What? No, erode! That’s when the water washes dirt away, like this.

Erode-y road-y road!

It’s kind of happening all the way along here. I guess I should shut down the Zerby wash.

Oh, no need for that! We just need to solve this problem. But first, we should fix the clip.

Uh-oh!

Oh, let’s get filled!

All fixed! Yeah, looks as good as new! No more falling apart, Cliff.

If more water comes down here, though, it’ll just happen again.

Well, that’s okay! I know how to fix it. Come on!

Okay, so this is my idea. Check this out!

Okay, what we do is dig a big hole right here, and that way the water goes in the hole and not over the cliff.

Oh, sounds good to me! I’ll get to work!

Last scoop, and there! Ha ha, that was fun! But now I’m pretty dirty.

Well, let’s test it out, Phil! I’ll wash you clean, and we’ll see if this idea works!

Yay, that’s fun! Let me dump my dirt!

Okay, serve me wash!

All right, I’m ready for the wash!

All right, fire it up, water!

All right, turning it on!

Here comes the water!

It’s working! The water is going down here and into the hole and not over the cliff! Yay!

Sorry, Phil! The hole is getting pretty full, though. It’s filling up fast.

Oh, well, he’s almost on the wash. He’s almost done.

Uh-oh! Maybe we shouldn’t have put all this water so close to the edge.

Well, why, Zack? I think the water might make the dirt kind of weak. This whole section could wash away.

Oh no!

Oh, that’s a problem!

Oh, I gotta stop it! Don’t wash the winky! No, don’t wash your way here!

Well, I guess that didn’t work.

Oh, you could fix that, right?

Yeah, I could fix that!

Good, ’cause this is a disaster!

There! I told you, good as new!

Wow, Phil, that’s a great job! Construction service can build anything out of dirt!

But how do we get it to stay built and not erode like before?

Well, answers are everywhere!

Way to go!

You want me to turn the water on again?

I don’t know, that mud is pretty wet now. We’ll definitely get stuck every time we go around.

Yeah, we’re here to race, not get stuck in the mud!

Oh yeah, water helped us stay cool, but it made the track too muddy. We just need to try, try again and find a way to stay cool and keep racing!

Yeah, you got that right, Zack!

Hey, Walter, what’s that leaf for?

Well, it’s hot out here! I need a bit of shade to keep cool, especially if you don’t want me to use any water.

Oh, good thinking! I have some umbrellas back in Zerby Town, but this leaf will do for now.

Don’t umbrellas protect you from the rain?

Yeah, but they can give you shade from the sun as well!

Well, that’s how we can enjoy!

Try again! Let’s get some umbrellas!

Yay, fun!

All right, I’ll show you where they are!

See? What did I tell you? Aren’t these great for the sun?

Yeah, it’s like we can take shade wherever we drive!

Hey, instead of calling them umbrellas, we should call them sunbrellas!

Sunbrellas! I like it!

Okay, let’s race!

Okay, okay!

Ready, set, turbo!

It’s hard work with these umbrellas!

How come I’m not going as fast as usual? This umbrella is really slowing me down!

Yeah, I’m working twice as hard just to go as fast!

Are they not working, Zerbies?

The sun rays kept us cool until we tried to go fast, but then they caught the air and pulled us back. The harder we tried to go fast, the hotter we got!

Yeah, racing with these umbrellas is really hard! We can’t go very fast at all, and it makes it really hot to drive!

Yeah, the harder we pulled the umbrella, the hotter our engines started to get!

I can’t wait to get rid of these so we can drive without them again!

Yeah, come on, let’s go!

Hey, Zerbies!

[Music]

I’m hot!

Hey, Zerbies! Is it hot in the sun without your umbrellas?

Oh yeah!

Yeah, I think we’re gonna have to try, try again!

Yeah!

All right, Lily, let me see! Spraying water worked but made the track all muddy!

Yeah, and driving in the shade was great with these umbrellas!

Yeah, but not if we want to drive fast, because then the umbrellas catch all the wind and slow us down!

Well, why don’t you hang out with me in the shade? It isn’t as exciting as racing, but it is much cooler!

Hey, yeah! Being in the shade is much cooler than being in the hot sun! So all we need to do is race in a place where there’s lots and lots of shade, like on the forest trails where there’s lots and lots of trees!

Why didn’t we think of that before?

Ready, set, way to beat the heat, Zerbies! I’ll take the umbrellas back to Zerby Town!

[Music]

It isn’t staying together very well here.

Let me try!

We just need to shape this part here to push it up.

It’s not working!

You’re right! No matter how we try to shape it into a ramp, the sand just keeps falling back down!

Well, then we need to try, try again! If we can’t change the shape of this sand pile, then we have to make it big enough to reach the top of the log on its own!

More sand!

Good thing it’s so fun to move!

This is turning into a really big job!

Big jobs are what we big Zerbies are made for!

All right, one more load!

How to do it, Strut?

And… there!

Yeah, we did it! We did it!

Yeah, it’s all the way to the top now!

All right, let’s get on top of that log!

Okay, tell you what, I’m going to give you a little boost!

[Music]

So close! Good try, Zack!

Hmm, my tires just kept spinning! I think this sand is too soft to drive up!

We have to find some way to make the ramp stronger!

We have to try, try again!

Let’s look around and see if we can find something that will help us!

Answers are everywhere!

Good idea! Let’s go!

Oh, pine tree! Too tall, too skinny!

Uh, no time to move on!

Do you have any idea?

Oh, hey! It’s Walter and Jake!

Hey, Walter!

Hey, Jake!

Who said that?

I don’t know!

Hi, guys! What are you doing?

Oh, hey, Zack!

Well, I was just wetting the sand!

Wetting the sand?

Yeah! When the sand is wet, it’s a lot easier to drive on!

Uh-oh! Hey, that gives me an idea! Come on, Walter, follow me!

Oh, okay! Where are we going?

What’s going on?

We built a ramp! It’s by the log! It’s really cool!

Where?

Hey, Zack!

Oh, hi, Walter! What are you doing here?

Walter’s gonna help us! The way to fix our ramp is to get it wet! Water will make it stronger!

Yeah! Wet sand seems to hold together better than dry sand, so I thought we’d try giving it a good soaking!

Well, guess what? I’m the guy to do just that!

Okay, stand back! Here comes the water!

All right, there you go! You gotta go up high a little bit, then you gotta go for that side! Up high and low! Get the whole thing wet!

There we go!

Huh! That’s one wet ramp!

I guarantee it! I’m gonna go try it out!

Go, Zack! You can do it!

All right! You can do it!

Huh! But it’s holding together! My wheels aren’t slipping!

Hey, hey! It’s working!

Huh! It’s working!

Hey, I did it!

Fantastic!

Wow! I can see the whole sandpit from up here!

Come on up, Rex!

All right, on my way!

Okay, Zack, let me know when you’re ready!

Okay, I’m all hooked on, Rex!

Okay, here we go! Pulling!

Okay, pull me up, Rex!

I’m pulling! It’s working!

All right!

No, you gotta go over to the side!

Oh, to the side!

Okay, overboard to the side!

Pulling to the side!

[Music]

Other side!

It’s not the right side!

No, wait! Back up, Rex! Back up!

Okay, backing up!

Ah, I guess that idea didn’t work!

No, let me try another angle!

Okay, how’s this?

Yeah, that looks good! Keep pulling!

Okay, I’m going!

Hey, hey! What’s wrong?

Yeah, I’m stuck on this stuff here!

Right! I’m pulling as hard as I can!

No, I’m caught on this stuff!

You have to back up, Rex!

Backing up, Zack!

I don’t think it’s gonna work!

Oh, we’ll just have to try, try again!

What should we try next?

I don’t know! I can’t think of anything!

Well, you know what we say when that happens, right?

Answers are everywhere!

Let’s look around!

I’ll look around down here, and I’ll look around up here!

Rex, your rope!

Ha ha! Looking around!

You still have your rope hook on, Rex!

Your rope!

Uh-oh! He’ll figure it out!

Hmm, look at this colorful tree! It’s beautiful, but I don’t think that’s gonna help!

Zach, off the beach!

Nope!

Okay, go around looking!

Oh, all right!

There’s a bush here!

I can’t look for answers that way!

I’ll go to the other side of the beach and look for answers over here!

Oh yeah, there’s the rock here in the water on this side of the beach!

So no answers on this side!

I have to try this!

Answers are everywhere!

Everywhere!

Echo!

Uh, what about this side of the beach?

All right, this is the side with the bush!

I already was on this side!

There’s not a lot of room on this beach to look for answers!

Hello, Zack! I saw you driving back and forth on the beach! What are you doing?

Hi, friend! I’m looking for answers on how to get off this beach!

Okay, let me know if you need my help!

Hey, wait a minute! Maybe that’s the answer!

What’s the answer?

I totally forgot that I can get off the beach by traveling on the water!

How would you do that on your friend?

Oh yeah, but you can’t get on yet, though! You need your life jacket first!

Hey, Zack! I had an idea! Why don’t you swim around the rock with your life jacket?

I put mine on to show you!

I don’t need to swim, Rex! I can ride Fran!

Oh yeah!

Hi, Fran!

Hello, Rex!

Did you bring a life jacket for Zack?

Yeah, did you?

Yeah!

Hold on!

Dumping!

Oh, good!

All right, thanks, Rex! My life jacket!

Yay!

I thought life jackets were a good idea!

All right, I got my life jacket on! Let’s go, Fran!

Wait for me!

What are you doing?

Well, I thought I could come down too! I like getting rides on Fran as well!

Well, hop aboard, Zerbies!

And I’m driving with my stand!

Oh, what? You dropped all your sand!

I did?

Yeah!

Oh no! There’s still a little bit there, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough!

Yeah, you’re right!

I guess I don’t have a nifty bucket to hold this in like you do!

I guess this idea didn’t work!

It’s okay! We can always try, try again!

You’re right, Rex! What should we do differently?

Well, why don’t we look around?

Answers are everywhere!

Oh, good idea!

Do you see anything?

Right, there’s nothing back there!

Um, I don’t see anything yet!

I don’t either!

Uh, hey! Maybe… hey, Rex, come and look at this!

Oh, what is it, Zack?

Look at this bark! It looks like a scoop!

Yeah, it’s sort of the same shape as my dump bucket! I bet I could use this bark to carry sand!

Oh yeah, I bet it would hold a lot of sand!

Okay, let’s take it back to the sandpit! Help me get it on my roof!

Okay, let’s do it!

All right, let me try this again with my fancy new scoop!

Okay, I think it’s gonna work! Are you ready?

Okay, all set!

[Music]

Ah! Hey, look at that! It totally fits on there!

Okay, just let me back up!

Hey, how’s it working?

I think it works really well!

Look at that!

All right, let’s go back to Zerby Town!

Oh, I have to get a load too!

Oh, okay! I’ll stay here!

Ah, there we go! Yay! Back to Zerby Town!

Back to Zerby Town! Come on, Zack!

I’m coming!

I just… this is heavy!

Sure it is, but you can do it!

You think I would make a good dump truck?

Yeah, this hill is steep, but I think I would make a good dump truck!

You would!

How are you doing?

I’m good! What if I spilled some?

Is that okay if I spill some?

That’s fine! Still a dump truck!

You’re still a dump truck!

Hey, look, Zack! We’re almost here!

Hey, Rex!

Hey, Zack! What do you do?

Oh, hi, Lily! I’m helping Rex move sand in this Zerby Town sandpit so we can make it bigger!

Oh, that sounds like fun!

It is!

Okay, see you later!

Whoa! I’m a dump truck!

Well, making the sandpit bigger is a great idea! So is carrying all that sand in that bark scoop!

That gives me an idea!

Okay, show me how it’s done, Rex!

First, I dump, dump, then I drive away like this!

Oh yeah! Dump truck!

Okay, here I go!

Wait! My mark doesn’t dump like that, Rex! What do I do?

Uh, just move around!

Oh, okay!

Okay!

Dump truck!

Dump truck!

Dumping!

Dumping!

It worked!

Hey, it’s bigger already!

Yeah, but we’re still gonna need more sand!

Did someone say more sand?

Lily! Spike!

What are you guys doing here?

Well, it looked like you were having so much fun hauling sand, we thought we would help!

This is great!

Hey, bigger sandpit!

So how do we get the sand off?

Okay, you have to be a dump truck!

Okay, so you have to move around really fast!

More like spilling trucks!
