Do you know what happens when it rains a lot? Sometimes, it can make people and animals act a little silly! Today, we’re going to read a fun story called “The Rain Came Down” by David Shannon. Let’s see what happens in a small town when the rain just won’t stop!
One Saturday morning, the rain started to fall. The chickens went “squawk, squawk!” The cat didn’t like it and yelled at the chickens. The dog barked at the cat. Oh my, what a noisy morning! The man in the house yelled at the dog, and the baby woke up crying. “Stop all that noise!” said the man’s wife. But the rain kept coming down.
A policeman heard all the noise and came to see what was happening. His car blocked the road, and a lady in a taxi was worried she would miss her plane. “Hurry up!” she said to the taxi driver. The taxi driver honked his horn, and the truck driver in front of him honked back. “I need to deliver my tomatoes!” he shouted. The ice cream man turned up his music, “Jingle, jingle!” And still, the rain came down.
The lady from the beauty shop came out to see what was going on. She bumped into the barber, and they started to argue. The painter on his ladder said, “I can’t paint in the rain!” He climbed down and accidentally hit the barber with his paint can. Now they were all arguing!
The baker came out of his shop. “My cakes are getting wet!” he said. He opened his umbrella and accidentally poked the pizza man. They started bickering too. A boy ran by, chasing a toy boat in the water. He splashed a little girl, and she cried. And still, the rain came down.
The policeman asked, “What’s all this noise?” Everyone was honking, yelling, and barking. But then, the rain stopped! The sun came out, and everything looked bright and shiny. A rainbow appeared in the sky!
“It’s too nice to argue,” said the baker. “I have cakes to bake!” “And I have pizzas to make,” said the pizza man. The painter said, “I need a shave while my building dries,” and went inside with the barber.
The policeman said, “Everything looks good now,” and drove away. The lady in the taxi decided to get her hair done. The lady with the boxes went home. The truck driver delivered the tomatoes, and the grocer picked up his fruit with help from the little girl and boy. He bought them ice cream cones as a thank you!
The man, his wife, and their baby had a picnic in the backyard. The dog, cat, and chickens took a nap in the warm sun. When the sun comes out, it makes everyone feel happy!
I hope you liked our story today! Remember, the sun can make everything better. See you next time for more fun stories!
Rainy Day Sound Hunt: Next time it rains, listen carefully to all the different sounds you can hear. Can you hear the rain tapping on the window, or maybe the sound of cars driving through puddles? Try to make a list or draw pictures of all the sounds you hear. Share your findings with your family and see if they heard the same sounds!
Weather Observation Journal: Create a simple weather journal. Each day, draw a picture of what the weather looks like outside. Is it sunny, rainy, or cloudy? Write a few words about how the weather makes you feel. Does the rain make you feel cozy, or does the sun make you feel happy? Share your journal with your class or family at the end of the week.
Rainy Day Role Play: With your friends or family, act out a scene from the story. You can pretend to be the chickens, the cat, the dog, or even the policeman! Use your imagination to add your own funny twists to the story. How would you solve the noisy problem if you were in the story?
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“The Rain Came Down” by David Shannon.
On Saturday morning, the rain came down. It made the chickens squawk. The cat yelled at the chickens, and the dog barked at the cat. And still, the rain came down. The man yelled at the dog and woke up the baby. “Stop all that yelling!” shouted the man’s wife. The dog barked louder, and still, the rain came down.
A policeman heard the noise and stopped to see what was wrong. His car was blocking traffic, and half a block away, a woman squirmed in the back of a taxi. “Hurry up, or I’ll miss my plane!” she told the taxi driver, so he started honking his horn. The truck driver in front of him got mad and started honking back. “I have tomatoes to deliver!” he shouted. The ice cream man heard the honking and turned up the music on his van. “Jingle, jingle,” went his music. “Slap, slap,” went his windshield wipers. And still, the rain came down.
The owner of the beauty parlor came out to see what all the fuss was about. She bumped into the barber coming out of his shop, and they began to argue. Up on his ladder, the painter grumbled, “I can’t paint in the rain.” He started to climb down and accidentally bumped the barber in the head with his can of paint. Now all three of them were arguing.
Next, the baker stepped out of his bakery. “My roof is leaking, and my cakes are getting wet!” he moaned. He opened his umbrella and accidentally poked the pizza man in the nose, so they joined in the bickering too. A boy ran by, chasing a small boat down the stream in the gutter. He splashed a little girl, and she began to cry. And still, the rain came down.
The grocery man stomped out onto the sidewalk and yelled, “Where is that delivery truck? I need my tomatoes!” He ran into a lady coming out of the clothing store and knocked her boxes into his fruit stand. Oranges, apples, and lemons bounced down the sidewalk. And still, the rain came down.
The policeman walked back to his car. “What is all this noise about?” he asked. The whole block was honking, yelling, bickering, and barking. And then the rain stopped, and so did the noise. The sun came out, and the air smelled fresh and sweet. Everything shimmered, and a rainbow stretched across the rooftops.
“It’s much too nice a day to be arguing,” said the baker. “I have cakes to bake.” “And I have pizzas to make,” said the pizza man. “I could use a shave while my building dries,” said the painter to the barber. Then they went inside.
The policeman said, “Everything looks okay here to me,” and he drove off in his car. The woman in the taxi decided she had time to have her hair done before her trip, so she went into the beauty parlor. The lady with the boxes got into the taxi and went home. The truck driver told the grocer, “I have your tomatoes.” “Wonderful!” said the grocer, “but first I have to pick up this fruit.” The little girl and boy helped him, so he bought them ice cream cones, and the ice cream man gave them each an extra scoop because it was such a nice day.
Then the man, his wife, and their baby had a picnic together in the backyard while the dog, the cat, and the chickens slept in the warm afternoon sun. Did you notice what happened to all the people in the story when the sun came out? The sun can brighten not only the sky; it can brighten our mood too.
