Hello, my reading friends! It’s Ani here. I’m so happy you’re joining me for a story today. If you love reading stories with me, make sure to come back for more!
Today, I want to say a big hello to Aiden and Elena in Liberty, Indiana; Millie and Isabella in North Brookfield, Massachusetts; Kenzie in the Philippines; Princess Katie in Pasadena, Texas; and Chase and Cayden in Connecticut. I’m so glad you’re all part of my reading family!
Today, we’re going to read about a little boy and girl with amazing imaginations. They both love a special treehouse fort, but they have different ideas about how to use it. Let’s see if they can find a way to play together as we read “The Fort.”
Once upon a time, a prince was walking to his castle. He was dreaming about a big royal feast with music, yummy food, and lots of fun with friends. But when he got to his castle, he found something surprising!
“What’s this? A treasure map on my invitation?” he wondered. The prince saw an eye patch on the floor. “Oh no, a pirate has been here!” he exclaimed. The prince cleaned up and made sure everything was ready for his feast.
The next day, a pirate was getting ready for an exciting sea adventure. She dreamed of finding treasure and having lots of fun. But when she got to her ship, she found something unexpected!
“An invitation to a feast on my treasure map?” she asked. The pirate found a crown on the floor. “A prince has been on my ship!” she cried. The pirate cleaned up and got ready to sail away.
The prince came back to his castle and found it messy again. “That pirate has been here!” he shouted. Later, the pirate found her ship messy again. “That prince came back!” she yelled.
On the day of the royal feast, the prince heard a pirate singing outside. “What are you doing on my ship?” the pirate asked.
“This is my castle!” said the prince. “If you don’t leave, I’ll put you in the dungeon!”
“Never! I won’t leave my ship!” said the pirate. “If you don’t go, I’ll make you walk the plank!”
Then, they both looked at the fort and had a great idea. “Let’s go to space!” they said together.
They imagined the fort as a spaceship. The prince became the mission commander, and the pirate became the chief scientist. Together, they prepared for a space adventure.
“Mission control ready for departure: ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…”
I’m so happy the little boy and girl found a way to play together. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
Build Your Own Fort: Gather some blankets, pillows, and chairs at home to create your own fort. Imagine it’s a castle, a pirate ship, or even a spaceship! Invite a friend or family member to join you. Think about how you can work together to make your fort even more fun. What roles will each of you play in your adventure?
Draw Your Adventure: Take a piece of paper and draw a picture of the fort from the story. Add the prince, the pirate, and any other characters you imagine. What kind of adventure are they having today? Share your drawing with someone and tell them the story of your adventure.
Imagination Exploration: Next time you’re outside, look around and find a special place that could be your fort. It might be a tree, a playhouse, or even a big rock. Imagine what it could be: a castle, a pirate ship, or a spaceship. What kind of adventure will you have there? What treasures might you find?
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Okay, today’s shout-outs go to Aiden and Elena in Liberty, Indiana; Millie and Isabella in North Brookfield, Massachusetts; Kenzie in the Philippines; Princess Katie in Pasadena, Texas; as well as Chase and Cayden in Connecticut. Hello to you all! I’m so happy that you’re all a part of my reading family.
Are you ready for a story? In today’s book, we’ll meet a little boy and girl with wonderful imaginations. The trouble is they have very different ideas about the same treehouse fort. Let’s see if they can resolve their differences as we read “The Fort.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.

“The Fort,” written by Laura Perdue and illustrated by Adelina Lyrius.
As the prince strutted toward his castle, he daydreamed about the royal feast he was planning. He imagined music, food, and fun with friends. But when he crossed over the moat to begin decorating, the prince discovered that the castle was not at all like he’d left it.
“What’s this? A treasure map scribbled on my invitation?” The prince paced around the great hall and stepped on an eye patch. “Oh no, a pirate has invaded my castle!” The prince tidied up and rid the castle of all things pirate. He wasn’t about to let a pirate keep him from hosting his royal feast.
The next day, as the pirate paraded toward her ship, she daydreamed about the swashbuckling voyage she was charting. She imagined overflowing treasure chests and adventures on the high seas. But when she walked up the gangway to ready the ship, the pirate discovered that someone else had been aboard.
“An invitation to a feast written on my treasure map?” The pirate clomped around the galley and tripped on a crown. “A prince has raided my ship!” The pirate swabbed the decks and rid the ship of all things royal. She wasn’t about to let a prince keep her from sailing away to find treasure.
The prince returned the next morning only to find that once again his castle was not at all like he left it. “That dreadful pirate has made a mess of everything!” he cried.
Later that afternoon, the pirate discovered that yet again someone had been aboard her ship. “That puffed-up prince came back!” she bellowed.
When the prince arrived at his castle on the day of the royal feast, he yanked the tablecloth off the flagpole and smoothed it down on the tabletop. Then he heard a voice outside—a pirate voice singing a sea shanty.
“What are you doing on my ship?” the pirate hollered.
“Nonsense! This is my castle, and if you don’t stay out, I will put you in the dungeon!” declared the prince. He stomped onto the drawbridge to defend the castle.
The pirate seized her sword to stop the mutiny. “Never! I will not abandon my ship!”
“If you don’t leave, I’ll make you walk the gangplank!” shouted the prince.
“You can’t! I am planning a royal feast for friends!” The prince waved the invitation. “No pirates allowed!”
The pirate grabbed the paper. “I am going on an adventure in search of buried treasure! No royalty allowed!”
“Who wants to live on a stinky ship anyway?” shouted the prince. “I’d rather go to the moon!”
They both eyed the fort. “A voyage into space!” she said.
“On a spaceship?” he asked, imagining being the mission commander guiding their spacecraft and orbiting Earth together.
“Yes, on this spaceship!” she agreed, imagining being the chief scientist leading space exploration and making new scientific discoveries.
“Close the hatch!” The two astronauts prepared the spaceship for launch. She inspected their space helmets, adjusted their oxygen hoses, and tested the robotic arm. He studied the mission instructions.
“Mission control ready for departure: ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one…”
I’m so glad that the little boy and girl found a common idea so they could play together. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
