Hello, my reading friends! Have you ever seen someone you know in a place you never expected to find them? In this story, a boy and his dad are going to the mall, and they see someone surprising. Let’s find out who it is as we read “A Teacher in the Wild.” If you have a copy, grab it so you can read along with me.
The story begins with a boy and his dad taking a trip to the mall. They were excited to see a new game on sale. But something unexpected happened! They saw a car that looked just like Mrs. Brown’s, the boy’s teacher. He was surprised because he thought teachers never left the school. Could it really be her?
The boy noticed that the person he saw was wearing a t-shirt and jeans. That was unusual because Mrs. Brown always wore nice dresses and shoes at school. He started to wonder if this was really his teacher. She looked so relaxed and happy, not like the busy teacher he knew from class.
As they watched, Mrs. Brown went into a shoe store. The boy thought maybe she was an alien looking for special shoes! Then she went to a jewelry store. The boy imagined she might be a wizard needing magical crystals. Finally, she went to a bookstore. He thought she might be a witch buying spell books!
The boy was worried and wanted to warn his friends about this “teacher-stealing stranger.” But then, his dad waved at Mrs. Brown, and she came over to say hello. The boy was scared, but Mrs. Brown was friendly and kind. He realized she was just a normal person who sometimes goes shopping, just like everyone else!
In the end, the boy learned that teachers have lives outside of school. They do fun things like shopping and relaxing. It was funny to see his teacher in a different place, and he wasn’t scared anymore. He even wanted to buy his game, but his dad wanted to talk about his grades first!
I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
Teacher in the Wild Drawing: Imagine you saw your teacher outside of school in a surprising place. Draw a picture of your teacher doing something fun or unexpected. Maybe they are at the beach building sandcastles or at a park flying a kite. Share your drawing with the class and explain why you chose that activity for your teacher.
Role-Playing Adventure: With a friend or family member, act out a scene where you meet someone you know in an unexpected place. Take turns being the person who is surprised and the person who is doing something unexpected. Think about how you would feel and what you might say. Discuss how this activity helps you understand that everyone has different roles in different places.
Everyday Observations: Over the next week, pay attention to the people you see outside of their usual places. Maybe you see your bus driver at the grocery store or your neighbor at the library. Write down or draw what you notice about them. How are they different from when you usually see them? What does this tell you about people having different parts of their lives?
Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“A Teacher in the Wild,” written by Devin Siebold, illustrated by Izzy B.
Was it a joyous small trip for the new game on sale, or a nightmare in disguise? Heed caution in my tale, for this is the story of a father and a child who narrowly escaped a teacher in the wild.
The drive was pretty normal, then we entered the lot. I saw a car like Mrs. Brown’s. It couldn’t be! I thought she never leaves the school. Why on earth would she be out? Unless that wasn’t Mrs. Brown. I had better sneak and scout.
The first clue that it wasn’t her was the t-shirt and jeans. I see her each and every day; she’d never worn those things. The real Mrs. Brown is on the left: tight bun in her hair, nice dress shoes with good arch support. As opposed to the Mrs. Brown on the right, well-rested, in comfortable clothes. Jeans are for Friday only, and sneakers.
Then there was her smiling face. It looked so carefree, not nearly as stressed out as she was in class with me. See for yourself; this is Mrs. Brown’s yearbook photo. Oh look, it seems she’s shopping! She’s checking out the shoes. That looks innocent enough, but it could just be a ruse. Maybe she’s an alien and her ship is landing soon, and she needs a special pair of shoes.
Then on to the jewelry store, where she’s checking out a charm. Quite normal, you may think, but I say sound the alarm! Surely everyone knows that teachers are always broke. Could this be a magical wizard in need of crystals for her cloak?
Her last stop is in the bookstore, but if she wanted to read, well, school had an entire library of all she would ever need. Therefore, she must be a witch, shopping for her spells so she can turn us all into chickens at the sound of a classroom bell!
I’ve got to warn my schoolmates about this teacher-stealing stranger! If she makes it back to school, we’re all in serious danger! I said, “Dad, we have to go!” But he ignored my warning call and waved at someone across the mall.
Oh no, it can’t be true! Mrs. Brown was on her way! “Run while you still can, or we’ll both become her prey!” She reached out her hand to shake, and I cowered behind Dad’s back. I couldn’t bear to see what would happen next.
Just then, I heard a laugh and a warm hand on my own. The subtle kindness in her voice, a soft comforting tone. My eyes opened to Mrs. Brown and all her wonderful features. There is no mistaking it now; this was indeed my teacher!
Turns out she is normal and sometimes leaves the school. Good thing I wasn’t scared, but my dad sure looked worried. Now let’s go buy that game I want! But my father seemed delayed. “Now wait one minute, kiddo, I want to discuss your grades.”
“No, wait! You can’t! Don’t listen! Let’s run until we’ve lost her!” You see, this isn’t really Mrs. Brown, but a jeans-wearing imposter. Teachers have lives outside of school, don’t they? And it’s so much fun to see them in places we never expect to.
I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
