???? The Gingerbread Man Story

Hello, friends! Are you ready for a fun story? Today, we’re going to read about “The Gingerbread Man.” Let’s get started!

Once Upon a Time…

There was a little old man and a little old woman. One day, they decided to make a gingerbread man. They mixed the dough, rolled it out, and shaped it into a little man. They gave him raisin eyes, a nose, and a mouth, and dressed him in a sugar glaze suit. Then, they put him in the oven to bake.

The Gingerbread Man Comes to Life!

When the gingerbread man was ready, he jumped out of the oven and ran away! The little old man and woman were surprised. The gingerbread man shouted, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man!”

Running Away

The gingerbread man ran down the road. The little old man and woman chased him, but he was too fast. He met a butcher, a cow, and a pig along the way. Each time, he said, “You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man!” And he kept running.

Meeting the Fox

Finally, the gingerbread man met a clever fox. The fox pretended he couldn’t hear the gingerbread man and asked him to come closer. When the gingerbread man did, the fox quickly caught him!

The End of the Chase

The little old man, the little old woman, the butcher, the cow, and the pig all watched sadly as the fox ate the gingerbread man. The gingerbread man learned that he wasn’t as uncatchable as he thought!

Once you’ve made your gingerbread man, imagine he comes to life! Where would he run in your house or classroom? Draw a map of his adventure and share it with your friends.

  • Catch Me If You Can Game: Play a game of tag inspired by the gingerbread man’s escape. One child can be the gingerbread man, and the others can be the little old man, woman, and animals from the story. As you play, think about how the gingerbread man felt when he was running away. What would you say if you were the gingerbread man?

“The Gingerbread Man,” retold by Jim Ellsworth, illustrated by Barbara McClintock.

Once upon a time, there was a little old man and a little old woman. One day, the little old woman said, “Let’s make a gingerbread man!” “Yes, let’s!” said the little old man, and they did.

So they mixed up the batter, rolled out the dough, and shaped the little arms, legs, and head. With raisins, they made the little eyes, nose, and mouth. Then, with sugar glaze, they dressed him in a fancy suit of clothes. When all was set, they put the gingerbread man into the oven and waited.

Pretty soon, a delicious smell coming from the oven told them that the gingerbread man was ready—and so were they! But when they opened the oven door, out popped the gingerbread man, and he ran across the floor.

The little old man and the little old woman could hardly believe their eyes. The gingerbread man looked up at them, put his little hands on his hips, and said, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man!”

The little old man reached down to grab him, but quick as a wink, the gingerbread man ran out the door and down the road. The little old man and the little old woman ran after him. “Come back! Come back!” they yelled. But the gingerbread man just looked over his shoulder and said, “No, I won’t come back! I’d rather run than be your snack!” And he kept on running.

He ran and ran until he met a butcher standing in front of his shop. The gingerbread man looked up at him, put his little hands on his hips, and said, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man! I’ve run from a husband, I’ve run from a wife, and I’ll run from you too!”

The butcher reached down to grab him, but quick as a wink, the gingerbread man ran on down the road, and the butcher ran after him. “Come back!” yelled the butcher. Not far behind, the little old man and the little old woman were yelling too, “Come back! Come back!” But the gingerbread man just looked over his shoulder and said, “No, I won’t come back! I’d rather run than be your snack!” And he kept on running.

He ran and ran until he met a black and white cow. The gingerbread man looked up at her, put his little hands on his hips, and said, “You can’t catch me! I’ve run from a wife, I’ve run from a butcher with a carving knife, and I’ll run from you too!”

The black and white cow reached out to grab him, but quick as a wink, the gingerbread man ran on down the road, and the cow ran after him. “Come back!” yelled the cow. Not far behind were the little old man, the little old woman, and the butcher, all yelling, “Come back! Come back!” But the gingerbread man just looked over his shoulder and said, “No, I won’t come back! I’d rather run than be your snack!” And he kept on running.

He ran and ran until he met a muddy old sow. The gingerbread man looked up at her, put his little hands on his hips, and said, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man! I’ve run from a husband, I’ve run from a wife, I’ve run from a butcher with a carving knife, I’ve run from a cow, and I’ll run from you too!”

The muddy old sow reached out to grab him, but quick as a wink, the gingerbread man ran on down the road, and the muddy old sow ran after him. “Come back!” yelled the sow. Not far behind were the little old man, the little old woman, the butcher, and the black and white cow, all yelling, “Come back! Come back!” But the gingerbread man just looked over his shoulder and said, “No, I won’t come back! I’d rather run than be your snack!” And he kept on running.

He ran and ran until he met a fox. The gingerbread man looked up at him, put his little hands on his hips, and said, “You can’t catch me! I’ve run from a husband, I’ve run from a wife, I’ve run from a butcher with a carving knife, I’ve run from a cow, and I’ll run from you too!”

“What did you say?” asked the fox. The tricky fox pretended that he couldn’t hear. “Well, I’m not as young as I used to be,” he said. “You’ll have to come closer and speak louder.” The gingerbread man stepped closer and in a very loud voice said, “Run, run, as fast as you can! You can’t catch me; I’m the gingerbread man! I’ve run from a husband, I’ve run from a wife, I’ve run from a butcher with a carving knife, I’ve run from a cow, and I’ll run from you too!”

Just then, the little old man, the little old woman, the butcher, the black and white cow, and the muddy old sow came running around a turn in the road, yelling, “Come back! Come back! Come back!”

The gingerbread man looked over his shoulder, but before he could say a single word, the fox jumped up and grabbed him. Quick as a wink, with a snap and a lick, the gingerbread man was gone.

The little old man, the little old woman, the butcher, the black and white cow, and the muddy old sow all stood and stared sadly at the fox. He hadn’t left a single crumb for anyone.

And so ends the tale of the gingerbread man. The gingerbread man thought he was uncatchable until he was outsmarted by the fox, who just couldn’t resist a yummy baked treat.
