Hi there! I’m Ryan Lagon, and I’m Craig Tovy. We’re so happy you’re joining us for Story Time! Today, we’re reading a fun book called “How to Catch a Leprechaun,” written by Adam Wallace and illustrated by Andy Elkerton.
It’s a dark night, and everything is quiet because St. Patrick’s Day is almost here. A leprechaun is coming, and he’s very tricky! He might pull out your shoelaces or sprinkle glitter in your hair. And guess what? He leaves shiny gold coins everywhere!
We want to catch this leprechaun because he has a cool green hat with a little fuzz. It’s so nice, and we want it! But catching a leprechaun is not easy. He’s small and very clever because he’s from Ireland.
The leprechaun is so sneaky! He can escape from any trap we set. We tried using a shoebox with a stick, but he danced right out of it! We even tried to catch him with a nut and some dandelion tea, but he was too quick for us.
This leprechaun has been around for 200 years, so he knows all the tricks. Even when we tried using an iron cage, he escaped with his twinkly toes. Maybe one day, a super smart kid will make the perfect trap to catch him!
We didn’t catch the leprechaun this time, but that’s okay. We learned that leprechauns are very wily, which means they’re really good at being sneaky. Maybe next year, we’ll have better luck!
Thanks for joining us for Story Time! We want to give a big shout-out to Mrs. Coulson’s class in Kaiser, West Virginia, Alex and Amalia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Pate’s class in Chelsea, Alabama!
If you want your own shout-out, just visit rcraig.com and send us a message. Tell us your name and where you’re from, and you might hear your name next time!
See you next time for more fun stories! Bye!
Build Your Own Leprechaun Trap: Gather some materials like shoeboxes, string, paper, and crayons. Use your imagination to design and build your own leprechaun trap. Think about what might attract a leprechaun and how you could catch him. Share your trap with a friend or family member and explain how it works. What makes your trap special?
Treasure Hunt Adventure: With the help of an adult, hide some shiny coins or small treasures around your home or yard. Create a simple map or set of clues to lead someone to the hidden treasures. As you search, think about how a leprechaun might hide his gold. What places would be good hiding spots?
Imagine and Draw: Draw a picture of what you think a leprechaun’s home might look like. Is it in a tree, under a rainbow, or somewhere else? Add details like furniture, decorations, and maybe even a little leprechaun family. Share your drawing with others and describe what life might be like for a leprechaun in your imagined world.

Hey, I’m Ryan Lagon, and I’m Craig Tovy. Welcome to Story Time with Ryan Lagon and Craig Tovy! Today’s book is “How to Catch a Leprechaun,” written by Adam Wallace and illustrated by Andy Elkerton.
The night is dark, the streets are quiet, and St. Patrick’s Day is near. I tap my hammer so you’ll know the leprechaun is here! I’ll pull out all your laces, put glitter in your hair, and when you walk around, you’ll see my gold coins everywhere.
Okay, the leprechaun is here, and we are catching this leprechaun for one reason and one reason alone: that’s right, I want his hat! Oh, you want his hat? Did you see that thing? It’s green and has a little fuzz. I want it on my head. I’m going to get you, leprechaun!
Okay, this should be a breeze. He’s little—like, teeny tiny. I think this leprechaun is wily; he’s from Ireland. I think you’re absolutely right! We’re going to catch this leprechaun, but we have to be careful.
You’ll never catch me in your trap! Yes, I’ll make a scene and turn the whole place upside down. Your toilet will be green!
House number one, I’m going in. Really? That’s your trap? I’m in and out without a doubt. That one was a snap!
Oh no, I think it’s getting worse! A shoebox on a stick? I’ll dance a jig and still escape. We leprechauns are quick!
What? He avoided a shoebox on a stick? That was our best idea! Oh, leprechaun, I’m still coming for you because I want your shoes! The buckle matches the buckle on the hat, so I can do a little dance.
Okay, Ryan, do you want to be a leprechaun? No? Just the once? Okay, great!
Ooh, we’re coming for you, leprechaun! You’re so wily!
Oh my gosh, another house! I fixed your shoes; they really were quite smelly. I’ll eat the nut you left as bait and leave with a full belly.
Now you’re talking! Look at this; it’s dandelion tea! But I’m too speedy for your trap. This tea is mine for free!
I know you want my pot of gold. That iron cage was clever, but I’ve been alive for 200 years. You won’t catch me!
Now you’re getting fancy, but I’ll escape with Twinkle Toes. It seems to me an engineer has helped with this design. Too bad this little leprechaun is going to be just fine!
How to make stuff: a brain box for engineering beginners.
This leprechaun is just too wily. We must quit.
Wait a second! Leprechaun, you tried to trick us!
I will not stop me from becoming a leprechaun!
So you do want a leprechaun’s costume?
It’s fine if you want to be a leprechaun.
I don’t want to be a leprechaun!
I’m not wily enough!
We’re coming for you!
We’re going to get you!
One quick thought: don’t just stop!
Don’t think about it!
We’re moving on with the story.
Your entire house is one big trap!
Nice try indeed, but soon enough, I’ll sneak right out the door.
Totally safe place for leprechauns!
Leprechaun be gone!
Give me quite a scare, but without the four-leaf clover, I won’t be caught in there!
You’ll never catch this leprechaun!
Impossible, that’s a fact! Unless one day a brilliant child designs the perfect trap.
But who will that child be?
Better luck next year!
What a disappointment! We didn’t catch the leprechaun.
Now I’m never going to be a leprechaun!
So you did want to be a leprechaun?
Of course, I wanted to be a leprechaun, Craig!
Why?
You can get the clothes somewhere else!
I didn’t want the clothes! If I became the leprechaun, the gold would be mine!
You know, there’s one thing you have in common with the leprechaun that you can be proud of, and that is that you are wily!
And it’s all because of the homeland!
You’re not from Ireland!
7% Irish!
How to catch a leprechaun to get his gold or cap. I’ll need to be smarter than he and set a clever trap. He’ll run right past me, mouse trap or shoebox on a stick. Steal my dandelion tea and drink it up so quick!
He’ll dance a fancy dance and do it all quite slyly.
It’s hard to catch a leprechaun who’s really rather wily!
So it’s been tough; I’ve had enough! Done everything I can!
I’ll never catch a leprechaun who comes from Ireland!
Thanks for watching Story Time with Ryan Lagon and Craig Tovy! Now it’s time for shout-outs!
Shout out to Mrs. Coulson’s class in Kaiser, West Virginia!
Shout out to Alex and Amalia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!
Shout out to Mrs. Pate’s second-grade class in Chelsea, Alabama!
So remember, if you want your very own shout-out, all you have to do is go to rcraig.com and send us a message. You could say anything, but it’s best if you say, “I would like a shout-out,” and then say your name and where you’re from.
That’s the simplest way!
We’ll see you next time!
Okay, bye!
