In today’s Story Time lesson, we explored the book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt, which tells the story of Duncan and his crayons who express their feelings through letters. The lesson emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing everyone’s uniqueness, as Duncan learns to appreciate his crayons and use them creatively. We also encouraged participants to engage with colors in their environment and to express their creativity through drawing.
  1. What did the crayons want to tell Duncan?
  2. How can we show our friends that we care about them?
  3. What fun things can you create with different colors?

Welcome to Story Time!

Hello, friends! We’re so happy you’re here with us today. We’re Ryan Legod and Craig Tovy, and we love sharing fun stories with you. Are you ready for a great story adventure?

Today’s Special Book

Today, we’re going to read a super fun book called “The Day the Crayons Quit.” It was written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers. Let’s find out what happens in this colorful story!

Meet Duncan and His Crayons

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Duncan. He loved to color and had a box full of crayons. But one day, something surprising happened. When Duncan opened his crayon box, he found letters instead of crayons!

The Crayons Have Something to Say

Each crayon wrote a letter to Duncan. They had some funny things to say! The red crayon was tired from coloring so many fire trucks and apples. The blue crayon felt too short because it was used a lot for the sky and oceans. And the yellow and orange crayons were arguing about who should color the sun!

Learning from the Crayons

Through their letters, the crayons taught Duncan an important lesson. They showed him how everyone is special and has their own feelings. Duncan learned to listen and care for his crayons, just like we should care for our friends.

Let’s Be Creative!

After reading the letters, Duncan had a great idea! He used all the crayons in new and exciting ways. He made a colorful picture that made all the crayons happy. You can be creative too! Try using different colors in your drawings and see what amazing pictures you can create.

Time to Explore Colors

Now that you know about Duncan and his crayons, let’s have some fun with colors! Can you find something red in the room? How about something blue or yellow? Colors are everywhere, and they make our world beautiful.

Thank You for Joining Us!

We hope you enjoyed the story of “The Day the Crayons Quit.” Remember, every color is special, just like you! Keep exploring, keep coloring, and keep having fun. We can’t wait to see you next time for another story adventure!

  • What is your favorite color, and why do you like it so much? Can you think of something special that is that color?
  • If your crayons could talk, what do you think they would say to you? How would you feel if they wrote you letters like they did to Duncan?
  • Have you ever had to share something with a friend? How did it make you feel, and what did you learn from that experience?
  1. Crayon Color Hunt: Let’s go on a color hunt! Look around your room or outside and find objects that match the colors of Duncan’s crayons. Can you find something red, blue, yellow, and orange? Once you’ve found them, try drawing a picture using those colors. Share your drawing with a friend and talk about why you chose those objects.

  2. Crayon Feelings Game: Each crayon in the story had feelings. Let’s play a game where you pretend to be a crayon. Choose a color and think about how that crayon might feel. Are you a happy yellow crayon or a tired red crayon? Share your crayon’s feelings with the class and explain why your crayon feels that way. This will help us understand how colors can express emotions.

  3. Create a Crayon Story: Imagine your crayons could talk like Duncan’s. What would they say? Write a short story or draw a comic strip about a day in the life of your crayons. What adventures do they have? How do they work together to create something beautiful? Share your story with the class and see how creative everyone can be!
