Hello, my reading friends! I’m so happy you’re here to read with me. Today, we’re going to read a fun story about a spider who thinks he’s a superstar! Let’s find out what happens in “Spider the Celebrity” by S.D. Burke, with pictures by Grace Ji.
Once upon a time, there was a spider who thought he was very famous. He was so famous that people would scream, “Ah, there’s Spider!” whenever they saw him. But Spider didn’t understand why they were screaming. He thought they wanted his autograph!
One day, Spider was relaxing on a cozy bed when some people came in. They saw Spider and shouted, “Ah, it’s Spider!” The lady even yelled, “Get him!” Spider thought they really wanted his autograph, but he didn’t sign autographs.
The man left the room and came back with a shoe. Spider thought it was strange that someone would want their shoe signed. But Spider still said no. Then, the man threw the shoe at Spider! Spider realized they weren’t fans after all.
Spider knew he had to get away. He crawled quickly down the wall and under the bed. Just when he was about to rest, he heard a loud noise—the vacuum! Spider thought they wanted him to sign the vacuum too!
Spider scurried across the room as fast as he could. The lady screamed again, but Spider told her he had to go to his next photo shoot. He disappeared into a crack in the wall, safe and sound.
Spider thought it was a crazy day, but that’s what happens when you’re a big celebrity! He just wanted everyone to remember not to ask for autographs.
Wasn’t it funny how Spider thought everyone was his fan? I hope you enjoyed the story. See you next time for more fun reading adventures!
Spider’s Web Adventure: Create a simple spider web using yarn or string. Ask the children to help you weave the yarn around chairs or other objects to form a web. As you work together, discuss how spiders use their webs to catch food and how they might feel like celebrities when they catch a lot of insects. Encourage the children to imagine they are spiders and think about what it would be like to live in a web.
Spider’s Celebrity Walk: Have a “Spider Celebrity Parade” where each child pretends to be Spider walking down a red carpet. Provide props like sunglasses or hats to make it fun. As they walk, ask them to think about how Spider felt when he thought everyone wanted his autograph. After the parade, discuss how sometimes we might misunderstand situations, just like Spider did.
Observation Time: Go on a nature walk to look for real spiders and their webs. Bring magnifying glasses to observe them closely. Ask the children questions like, “What do you think this spider is doing?” or “Why do you think spiders are important?” Encourage them to share their thoughts and relate their observations to Spider’s adventures in the story.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

“Spider the Celebrity” by S.D. Burke, illustrated by Grace G.
I am Spider, and I’m kind of a big deal. I don’t mean to brag, but I am pretty famous. Spiders call Be Gone Pest at 1-800-GO-AWAY. I can’t go anywhere without people screaming, “Ah, there is Spider!” I have to remind them that I do not sign autographs.
They usually try to follow me, but I keep on crawling. I remember one time when some fans would not take no for an answer. I was just laying on a nice bed one afternoon when these people walked in. They did the usual “Ah, it’s Spider!” thing, but then things escalated.
“Get him!” the lady yelled to the man. She must have really wanted that autograph. I told them I do not sign autographs, but she kept yelling, “Get him now!” The man left the room but then returned with a shoe for me to sign. I thought this was very strange. Who wants their shoe signed? I guess these people did. Anyway, I once again said no, I do not sign autographs.
The next thing I knew, he threw the shoe at me. I could see that these people were not going to give up, so I quickly crawled down the wall and under the bed to try to get some sleep. I was just dozing off again when I heard a noise—the vacuum! Now they wanted me to autograph their vacuum. These people were crazy!
I knew I had to get out of there. I scurried across the room as fast as I could toward the door. The lady must have thought I was going to greet her because she screamed in excitement. I told her I must get going to my next photo shoot and disappeared into a crack in the wall.
Yeah, that was a pretty crazy day, but that is the price I pay for being such a big celebrity. It’s a rough life, but somebody has to do it. Just please remember, if you see me, do not ask for autographs!
I thought it was really funny how Spider kept mistaking the terrified screams from people as adoration from his fans. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
