Hi there! I’m Craig Tuffy, and I’m so excited to share a fun story with you today. We have a special book called “Paper Scissors” by Drew DeWalt, with pictures by Adam Rex. Let’s dive into this exciting adventure!
Once upon a time, in a magical place called the Kingdom of Backyard, there was a strong warrior named Rock. Rock was the mightiest in the land, but he felt sad because he couldn’t find anyone strong enough to challenge him.
Rock decided to travel to the mysterious forest by the tire swing. There, he met a warrior named Clothespin hanging on a rope. They had a duel, and Rock won! But Rock still felt unsatisfied, so he continued his journey.
In another part of the world, in the Empire of Mom’s Home Office, there was a brave warrior named Paper. Paper wanted to find someone to battle, so he traveled across Desk Mountain. He met a big, square monster called Computer Printer and won the battle!
Paper then went to the Pit of Office Trash Bin and battled a half-eaten bag of trail mix. Paper was victorious again and left the Empire of Mom’s Home Office.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen realm, there was a speedy warrior named Scissors. Scissors was the fastest blade in the land. Her first challenge was against a sticky circle called Roll of Tape. Scissors won the battle!
Next, Scissors traveled to the Frigid Wastes of the Refrigerator/Freezer, where she faced Dinosaur-shaped Chicken Nuggets. Scissors won again and continued her journey to find more challenges.
One day, in the great cavern of the two-car garage, Rock and Scissors met each other. They had an epic battle, and Rock won. Then, Scissors challenged Paper, and they all became friends after a series of battles.
Finally, Rock, Paper, and Scissors found their perfect matches and started a joyful three-way battle. This happy struggle continues to this day, and that’s why kids everywhere play the game of rock-paper-scissors!
Now you know the story of Rock, Paper, and Scissors. Next time you play rock-paper-scissors with your friends, remember the brave warriors and their exciting adventures!
Create Your Own Warrior: Imagine you are a new warrior in the Kingdom of Backyard. What would your name be, and what special powers would you have? Draw a picture of your warrior and write a short story about an adventure they go on. Share your story with your classmates and see what exciting adventures they came up with!
Rock-Paper-Scissors Tournament: Organize a rock-paper-scissors tournament with your friends or family. Keep track of who wins each round and see who becomes the ultimate champion. After the tournament, discuss what strategies you used and how you decided which move to play. Did you notice any patterns or tricks?
Explore Materials: Gather different materials from around your home or classroom, like paper, cloth, and plastic. Try cutting them with scissors and see which ones are easy or hard to cut. Talk about why some materials are stronger or weaker than others. What makes paper easy to cut, and why is rock so strong?

Today’s book is “Paper Scissors” by Drew DeWalt, illustrated by Adam Rex. Let’s get started!
Long ago, in an ancient and distant realm called the Kingdom of Backyard, there lived a warrior named Rock. Rock was the strongest in all the land, but he was sad because no one could give him a worthy challenge. Rock traveled to the mysterious forest by the tire swing, where he met a warrior who hung on a rope.
“I challenge you to a duel!” said the warrior. “Rock versus Clothespin!” Rock was victorious, but he was still unsatisfied. So he journeyed on to the mystical tower of Grandma’s favorite apricot tree, where he was met by an odd and delicious fruit.
“I challenge you to a duel!” said the apricot. “Rock versus Apricot!” Rock was victorious again, but still felt no joy. He left the Kingdom of Backyard in search of a worthy foe.
Meanwhile, in the Empire of Mom’s Home Office, a second-grade warrior named Paper sought the glory of battle. He set out across Desk Mountain to find his match. There, he met a large and squared monster.
“I will battle you!” said Paper. “Paper versus Computer Printer!” Paper was victorious and continued on to the Pit of Office Trash Bin, where he battled a half-eaten bag of trail mix. Paper won again and left the Empire of Mom’s Home Office.
At the same time, in the kitchen realm, there lived a third great warrior named Scissors. She was the fastest blade in all the land. Her first opponent was a strange and sticky circle.
“I will battle you!” said Scissors. “Scissors versus Roll of Tape!” Scissors was victorious and continued on to the Frigid Wastes of the Refrigerator/Freezer, where she met her most fearsome adversary yet: Dinosaur-shaped Chicken Nuggets. Scissors won again and traveled beyond her own kingdom seeking a challenger.
One day, in the great cavern of the two-car garage, Rock and Scissors came face-to-face. An epic battle ensued, but ultimately, Rock was victorious. Scissors then challenged Paper, and after a series of battles, they all hugged each other and danced for joy, becoming fast friends.
Finally, they had each met their match and began to battle again in a massive three-way struggle. It is said that this joyous struggle still rages on to this very day. That is why children around the world still honor the three great warriors by playing games like rock-paper-scissors.
