???? Kids Book Read Aloud: ROCKET SHIP YOGA by Bari Koral

Welcome, Little Yogis!

Hello, my reading friends! Welcome to my cozy house. Today, we have something super fun to do together. We are going to read a book and do some yoga! Yoga helps us feel calm and happy, especially when things get a little busy.

Meet Our Book: Rocketship Yoga

Our special book is called “Rocketship Yoga,” and it’s written by Bari Koral. She is a wonderful children’s music artist and yoga expert. This book will take us on a space adventure while we learn some cool yoga poses!

Blast Off with Rocketship Breath

Before we start our space journey, let’s warm up with rocket ship breath. Sit up tall like a rocket. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly, imagining your breath lifting you up to the sky. Then, breathe out slowly as you imagine landing back on Earth. Let’s do this three to five times!

Fun Yoga Poses

Sit back on your heels, put your forehead on the floor, and rest your arms by your sides. Take some deep breaths and feel calm.

Snake Pose

Lie on your belly, put your hands by your shoulders, and lift your chest up like a snake. Look at the stars and take slow breaths.

Plank Pose

Start on your hands and knees, then stretch your legs back. Your body should be straight like a rocket. Hold strong!

When you’re ready, open your eyes. I hope you enjoyed our space adventure and yoga fun. See you next time!

  1. What was your favorite yoga pose from our space adventure, and why did you like it? Can you think of a time when doing yoga might help you feel calm or happy?
  2. If you could go on a real space adventure, what would you like to see or do? How do you think practicing yoga might help astronauts stay calm and focused in space?
  3. Imagine you are a star in the night sky. What would you see from up there? How does doing yoga make you feel like a star or a rocket ship?
  1. Space Adventure Yoga Sequence: Create your own space adventure by combining different yoga poses from the book. Ask the children to choose their favorite poses and put them in a sequence. Encourage them to think about what kind of space journey they would like to go on. For example, they might start with the “Rocketship Breath” to blast off, then move into “Star Pose” to explore the stars, and finish with “Shavasana Resting Pose” to float back to Earth. Let them share their sequences with the class.

  2. Yoga Pose Charades: Play a game of charades using the yoga poses from the book. One child picks a pose and performs it without speaking, while the others guess which pose it is. This activity helps children remember the poses and encourages them to observe and mimic movements, enhancing their understanding of body awareness and balance.

  3. Nature Walk and Yoga: Take the children on a short nature walk around the school or in a nearby park. Ask them to observe the shapes and movements in nature, like trees, animals, or clouds. After the walk, gather them in a circle and ask them to create new yoga poses inspired by what they saw. For example, they might create a “Tree Pose” by standing tall and stretching their arms like branches. This activity encourages mindfulness and creativity.

“Rocketship Yoga: An Out of This World Kids Yoga Journey for Breathing, Relaxing, and Mindfulness” by Barry Corle, acclaimed children’s music artist and kids yoga expert.

We’re going to go through the book two times. The first time I’ll read the story, and the second time through we’ll go over the poses. You’ll need to pause the video in between the poses.

I wanted to be a pilot ever since I was a child. I would gaze up at the stars, dreaming of flying a big rocket and going far into orbit. I blast into space to see what awaits. I land with a boom and walk on the moon, jumping through the air to feel gravity there. As my feet touch the ground, I explore what’s around. I reach up to the sky where it’s dark with no light. I touch one side of the moon and the other side too. I have come all this way on my own; I’m not heading home. I’m ready to launch and prepare to blast off. I fly out to outer space, further and further away. Now I touch all the stars. I’m the first to touch Mars. Not a sound in the place; everything is so quiet in space. Now I lay on my back to watch the stars swirl from my new place in this world.

Before we blast off, let’s warm up with rocket ship breath. Sit up tall and let your spine be long. Close your eyes. Inhale slowly and imagine your breath lifting up toward the sky. This is your rocket lifting off into space. Pause for five, four, three, two, one. Exhale slowly and imagine your breath lowering back down. This is your rocket landing safely back on Earth. Try this three to five times.

Let’s start with the child’s pose. Sit back on your heels, bring your forehead to the floor, and rest both arms along the sides of your body. Take three to five deep breaths.

Now we’ll do the snake pose. Lie on your belly, place your hands flat on the floor by your shoulders, and slowly lift up your chest while you gaze at the stars. Let your legs be as long as a snake. Take three to five slow, calming breaths.

Now we’ll learn how to do the plank pose. Start on your hands and knees, place your shoulders over your wrists, walk your legs back, and raise them off the floor. Your body should be a long straight line, like a plank or a big rocket. Press your hands and legs strongly into the earth. Try to hold for 30 seconds to one minute. Put your knees down to modify.

Alright, are you ready for the downward dog? Start on your hands and knees, place your hands flat and keep them firmly on the floor. Stretch your legs back, tuck in your toes, and lift your hips to the sky. Let your arms and legs be strong. From the downward dog, take several steps forward and back to walk on the moon.

Let’s do some donkey kicks. From downward dog, press your arms strongly into the ground, bend your knees, and take a few donkey kicks. Watch your body and make sure no one is behind you as you kick. After some donkey kicks, jump or walk your feet to your hands.

This is how to do a standing forward bend. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and fold forward at the waist. Let your head drop toward the floor. Your hands may land on the ground or dangle down. Gently sway from side to side as you explore the ground in outer space. Keep a slight bend in your knees.

Alright, time for the extended mountain pose. Stand tall, press your legs firmly into the ground, inhale, and stretch your arms strongly up toward the sky. Stretch your back slightly for a nice opening backbend.

This is the crescent moon pose. Stand tall with your feet together, interlace your fingers, and point your index fingers up. Keep your feet strong on the ground and raise your torso up to the sky. Stretch to one side of the sky so you can touch the moon. Take three to five breaths on one side before bending to the other side. Switch sides in crescent moon pose.

Let’s try the mountain pose. Stand tall, press your legs firmly into the ground, let your spine be long with your head reaching up toward the sky, and press your arms firmly into prayer hands. Stay rooted in the ground like a strong mountain. Stay here for one minute and take some slow, deep breaths.

This is the frog pose. Stand with your legs hip-distance apart, turn your feet out slightly if comfortable, and squat down. Gently push your knees apart with your elbows. Hold your squat for a few moments and then count down from five to one. Blast off!

Time for warrior three pose. Press one leg strongly into the ground, lift one leg up into the air, and fly. To help keep your balance, pick a spot to gaze at on the floor. Use a wall to balance if you need to. Switch sides, pressing the opposite leg strongly into the ground and bringing your other leg up into the air to fly.

Let’s do the star pose. Step your feet wide apart and stretch your arms out to the sides. Take some deep breaths and feel your energy expand out through your toes and fingers. Gently lift one leg to balance in your star pose. Repeat star pose on the other side.

Let’s play the listening game. Sit cross-legged or in a comfortable seat on the ground with your eyes closed. Just listen to what is around you for one minute. Shh, just listen. When you are ready, open your eyes.

Lastly, the shavasana resting pose. Lie on your back or somewhere you are comfortable. Take a few breaths in and out, letting your body relax and let go after your outer space adventure. Notice how you feel. Stay here for a minute or longer.

Let’s end our space adventure with star relaxation. Close your eyes and imagine a sky full of stars. Now reach your arms up and grab a star right out of the sky. Close your hands and start to rub your hands together quickly. Keep rubbing your hands faster and faster so you can feel the warmth of your star. Rub for at least 10 seconds. Now stop rubbing and gently start to pull your hands apart. Can you feel the heat of your star? You might even feel your hands tingling. Feel the energy in your hands from your star. Now you can place your hands on your heart and rub your heart gently with the warmth of your star. Your heart feels warm and happy.

When you are ready, open your eyes. In the back of the book, you’ll find a pose gallery with explanations of the benefits and modifications for each pose. Do you feel calm and relaxed? I know I do! I hope you enjoyed reading and doing yoga with me today. See you next time!

Let me know if you need any further modifications!
