Have you ever heard that unicorns shouldn’t wear certain things? Well, today we’re going to find out why someone said, “Never let a unicorn wear a tutu!” Let’s read the story “Never Let a Unicorn Wear a Tutu” by Diane Alber and see what happens!
One day, I heard my friend say that unicorns shouldn’t wear tutus. But I had a special tutu just for my unicorn, and I was curious to see what would happen. The unicorn was so excited to try it on!
First, the unicorn danced. Then, she twirled and pranced around happily. But suddenly, she ran off! “Where are you going?” I asked.
The unicorn found my shoe rack and wanted to wear my boots. I told her she could borrow them just this once. Then, she wanted me to wear fancy boots too, so I did!
Next, the unicorn found my bows and put them in her mane and tail. She wanted me to wear bows too, so I did. But off she ran again!
Oh no! The unicorn found my jewelry and put on necklaces, rings, and bracelets. She wanted me to wear jewelry too. Then, she ran to the kitchen and started tossing cupcakes at me!
Luckily, all the cupcakes landed perfectly on a plate. But the unicorn looked sad, and I didn’t know why.
I thought hard about why the unicorn might be upset. Then, I realized what was missing! I quickly found a tutu for myself and said, “Twinsies!” The unicorn was so happy!
The unicorn made me feel special all day. We wore tutus, fancy boots, sparkling bows, dazzling jewelry, and even shared yummy cupcakes together. Now I know: never let a unicorn wear a tutu unless you’re wearing one too!
I hope you loved our story today. See you next time for more fun adventures!
Unicorn Dress-Up Time: Gather some dress-up clothes like tutus, hats, and bows. Ask the children to dress up their favorite stuffed animal or toy as a unicorn. Encourage them to use their imagination and think about what other fun accessories their unicorn might like to wear. After dressing up their toy, have them share why they chose each item and how it makes their unicorn feel special.
Unicorn Dance Party: Play some fun music and have a unicorn dance party! Encourage the children to dance like the unicorn in the story. They can twirl, prance, and even pretend to toss cupcakes like the unicorn did. Ask them how dancing makes them feel and if they think the unicorn felt the same way.
Creative Storytelling: Ask the children to think about what other adventures the unicorn might have if she wore different outfits. Provide them with paper and crayons to draw a new story where the unicorn tries on something else, like a superhero cape or a pirate hat. Encourage them to share their stories with the class and discuss how the unicorn’s feelings might change with each new outfit.
Sure! Here’s a sanitized version of the transcript:

Have you ever heard that there are some things unicorns shouldn’t wear? Well, our little unicorn-loving friend overheard someone say something in particular that unicorns shouldn’t wear. Let’s find out more about it as we read “Never Let a Unicorn Wear a Tutu.” If you have a copy, go get it so you can read along with me.

“Never Let a Unicorn Wear a Tutu,” written and illustrated by Diane Albert.
Today, I overheard my friend say, “Never let a unicorn wear a tutu.” Unfortunately, I didn’t have a chance to ask why. Now I have this fantastic tutu for my unicorn, and I’m not sure what to do. This tutu was specifically made for a unicorn; it says so on the tag. So what could go wrong?
The unicorn immediately tried it on. First, she danced. Next, she twirled. After that, she pranced. It was great to see her so happy. Then she did something that I wasn’t expecting—she took off running!
“Where are you going?” I shouted. I soon found her at my shoe rack. Apparently, a tutu needs to be accessorized with shoes. I calmly explained to the unicorn that this would be the only time she could borrow my boots. I repeated, “The only time.”
After I got the boots on the unicorn, she wanted me to wear some fancy boots too. At first, I was reluctant, but I finally agreed. But then she took off running again.
This time, she got into my bows. “Stop!” I yelled. After the unicorn put bows in her mane and tail, she wanted me to wear bows too. And once again, she took off running. “Where are you going now?” I hollered.
“No, not the jewelry!” I screeched, but it was too late. Necklaces, rings, and bracelets were flying everywhere. After the unicorn layered herself in jewelry, she wanted me to wear jewelry too. But then she took off running again!
The unicorn headed right for the kitchen and started tossing cupcakes at me. Miraculously, all the cupcakes landed perfectly on the plate. I thought the unicorn would be ecstatic that I had saved all the cupcakes, but instead, a little teardrop ran down her cheek. She looked so upset.
I tried to figure out what had happened, but I couldn’t understand what the unicorn was trying to say. I started to think: if I were a unicorn with an amazing tutu, fancy boots, sparkling bows, dazzling jewelry, and yummy cupcakes, why would I be sad?
I soon realized that there was one thing missing. I quickly rushed to my closet, began rummaging through my clothes, and pulled out a tutu. I announced, “Twinsies!” The unicorn jumped for joy.
The unicorn made me feel special all day. She included me from the minute she tried on the tutu, the fancy boots, the hair bows, and the dazzling jewelry. She even invited me to eat the yummy cupcakes. It all makes sense now: never let a unicorn wear a tutu unless you’re wearing a matching one too!
I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
