Hi there! Do you like unicorns? I have a special story about a unicorn and some crayons. Let’s find out what happens!
Guess what? I have a pet unicorn! Isn’t that amazing? But everyone keeps saying, “Never let a unicorn scribble.” Hmm, I wonder why they say that?
I thought, “Unicorns can run on rainbows, so why can’t they scribble?” I decided to give my unicorn a crayon. But oh no! She ate it! My bright pink crayon was now in her tummy.
Maybe unicorns don’t know how to use crayons. So, I showed her how to scribble. I made a blue scribble, a pink scribble, a yellow scribble, and even a crazy scribble!
I thought, “Let’s try again.” I gave her a teal crayon, but she ate half of it! Oh dear! I told her, “Unicorns don’t eat crayons; we draw with them!”
Then I had a great idea! I tied some crayons to her horn. And guess what happened? Glittery scribbles started shooting everywhere! It was like a rainbow fountain!
Uh-oh, I heard my mom coming! I quickly explained, “Mom, I let my unicorn scribble, and now there’s a big mess!”
But when my mom looked, she smiled and said, “You didn’t make a mess; you made a glowing masterpiece!”
All the scribbles were on a big piece of paper. It was the most amazing art ever! My unicorn learned how to make a masterpiece!
So, if you hear that unicorns shouldn’t scribble, remember: all great art starts with a scribble, and even unicorns have to start somewhere!

Unicorn Scribble Art: Let’s make our own unicorn scribble art! Gather some crayons, paper, and a toy unicorn or any toy animal. Tie a crayon to the toy’s head or hold it gently in its mouth. Now, let the toy “scribble” on the paper. What colors do you see? Can you make a rainbow? Talk about how each scribble can be the start of a beautiful picture, just like in the story.
Crayon Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around your home or classroom! Find objects that match the colors of the crayons used in the story: blue, pink, yellow, and teal. How many objects can you find for each color? Share your findings with a friend or family member and discuss why colors are important in art and nature.
Story Time Discussion: Think about the story of the unicorn and the crayons. Why do you think the unicorn ate the crayons at first? What did the unicorn learn by the end of the story? Talk with a partner about a time you learned something new by trying again, just like the unicorn did.

**Never Let a Unicorn Scribble**
Written and illustrated by Diane Alvare

I’ve recently gotten a pet unicorn. I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true! Everyone keeps telling me to never let a unicorn scribble.
[Music]
Hmm, why would anyone say such a thing? I mean, unicorns can run on rainbows, so why can’t they scribble? I thought if I gave her just one crayon, what could go wrong? Well, I’ll tell you—she ate it! Now my favorite bright pink crayon was traveling to the belly of my unicorn.
This is probably why people say unicorns should never scribble—they eat crayons! Hmm, then it occurred to me: maybe unicorns don’t know how to use crayons. So, I gathered all my crayons and started to scribble.

I made a blue scribble, a pink scribble, a yellow scribble, and even a crazy scribble. Now that she could see how crayons worked, I thought I would give her another chance to scribble. I took out a teal crayon and placed it right in front of her, and she ate half of it!

Listen to me, unicorn! We do not eat crayons; we draw with them! But then I realized a unicorn couldn’t hold a crayon like I could. Maybe that was why she was eating them. I had an idea: maybe if I tied a few crayons to her horn, that would help her scribble.
Look! Within seconds, glitter scribbles started shooting out like water from a fire hose, circling rainbow scribbles everywhere! They were on the floor, on the ceiling, and even on my lamp. I’ve been begging my mom to redecorate my room for a while now, but I don’t think this is what she had in mind.
Then I heard a noise down the hall. Was it…? I’m going to be in so much trouble! I popped out of my room and blocked the door before my mom could say anything. I started to explain the mess she was about to see.
[Music]
Well, it all started when I heard to never let a unicorn scribble, but I had to find out why. So, I gave my unicorn a crayon, and then she ate it. Then I tried to teach her to scribble, but she ate another crayon. So, I tied the crayons to her horn, and boy was that horn magical! The scribbles started shooting out like a water fountain, and they were so sparkly! But it made such a mess, and I’m sorry.
My mom peeked around the corner and smiled. “You didn’t make a mess; you made a glowing masterpiece!”
All the scribbles were right on my easel—not on the ceiling, not on the walls, not on my lamp. They were all on one big piece of paper, and it was the most amazing art ever!
All this time, people wanted to stop unicorns from scribbling. It could be because they eat crayons or because it’s so messy. But if my unicorn had never scribbled, she would have never learned how to make this masterpiece.
So, the next time you hear that unicorns shouldn’t scribble, just remember: all great art starts with a scribble, and even unicorns have to start somewhere.
The end.
If you don’t have books, then what are you waiting for? Look, kids! There are storybooks that come to life, and it’s fun! I like to read books about fantasy and love. I tell other kids to get books because they’re full of stories and laughter. I’ll read them on the go—in the car, on a plane, even on a train! I’ve never been on a train. Don’t wait around; ask your grown-ups to download books now. You’ll be glad you did!
