Hello, my amazing reading friends! Are you ready for a fun story? Have you ever thought about what a dog might do at home when his family is away? Let’s find out with “Dudley’s Day at Home.” If you have the book, you can read along with us!
Sam is curious about what his dog, Dudley, does all day. “Mom, what does Dudley do when we’re not home?” Sam asks. Mom says Dudley does ordinary dog things like eating. But Sam imagines Dudley making pancakes for breakfast! Can you imagine a dog flipping pancakes?
Dudley loves to play! He enjoys paddle ball, checkers, and even Candy Land. He can build a house of cards too. What a talented dog! After playing, Dudley might take a nap with his stuffed Sam doll. Isn’t that cute?
Sam wonders if Dudley gets bored. Mom says Dudley stays busy with his friend Buttercup from next door. Dudley is great at video games and loves to jump on the bed. He also practices his tricks, but Buttercup isn’t too happy about disappearing tricks!
Dudley loves to relax in the sun. He has a chair, sunglasses, a hat, lemonade, a book, and snacks. What a perfect way to enjoy the day!
Mom says Dudley loves to exercise. Sam imagines Dudley running on a treadmill. Go, Dudley, go! Dudley is also a good watchdog. He makes sure no bunnies sneak into the house!
It looks like Dudley has an office job too! He talks on the phone and takes notes. He even has a picture of his family on his desk. What a busy dog!
Sam wonders if Dudley thinks about what the family does all day. Maybe Dudley imagines them sniffing trees, chasing squirrels, and taking naps. Can you howl like a dog at the moon? Try it!
At the end of the day, Dudley has some cleaning up to do. Sam says, “I was thinking about you all day, Dudley. Were you thinking about me too?” Dudley sure had a busy day!

Hi, I’m Rosie from Tampa. Like and subscribe to our channel.
“Dudley’s Day at Home,” written by Karen Kaufman Orloff, illustrated by Renee Andreani, and published by Flashlight Press. As we read this book, pay attention to how Sam imagines Mom’s answers to his questions.
“Mom, what does Dudley do all day when we go out?” Sam asks. “Oh, just ordinary dog things,” Mom answers. “Like what?” Sam wonders. “Well, he eats,” Mom replies.
Let’s see what Sam thinks Dudley is making for breakfast. It looks like pancakes, and Dudley seems to be quite the expert flipper! He plays, too. Wow, Dudley has many varied interests! He likes paddle ball, and I see some checkers and Candy Land. Look, he even built a house of cards! What a talented dog!
After that, he might take a nap. Do you see what Dudley’s holding? It’s a stuffed Sam doll.
“Does Dudley get bored?” Sam asks. “No,” Mom says. “He keeps busy with Buttercup from next door.” Dudley’s a regular video game expert and quite the artist. And who doesn’t like jumping on the bed?
“What else does Dudley do?” Sam wonders. “He probably practices his tricks,” Mom says. It looks like Buttercup’s not too happy about the possibility of disappearing. Dudley loves to stretch out in the sun. He’s got lounging perfected with chairs, sunglasses, a hat, lemonade, something to read, and snacks!
“Is that all?” Sam asks. “Maybe he runs around for a while. He does love exercise,” Mom replies. Sam agrees, saying Dudley is really getting a good workout on that treadmill. Go, Dudley, go!
“And Dudley is a good watchdog, right?” Sam asks. “Yes, he protects our house. There’s no way he’s letting that bunny in!” Mom says. “Whenever he needs to, he goes out to the yard to do his business.”
Oh, it looks like he has an office job! He’s on the phone, busily taking notes. He’s got some charts on the fence, and oh look, he has a picture of his family on his desk.
“Mom, do you think Dudley wonders what we do all day?” Sam asks. “He might,” Mom replies. Here’s how Dudley pictures what his family does all day. Do you see the things they’re doing that dogs like to do? Like sniffing trees, chasing squirrels and frisbees, eating their favorite food out of a bowl, digging up bones in the backyard, stretching, scratching their heads with their feet, and of course, everyone’s favorite afternoon pastime—taking a nap on a rug and howling at the moon.
Can you howl like a dog at the moon? I bet Dudley has lots of fun when we’re awake, Sam says. “Sure he does,” Mom agrees.
It looks like Dudley has some cleaning up to do. “Fast, Dudley! I was thinking about you all day. Were you thinking about me too?” I think he was! What do you think? Dudley sure had a busy day. I hope you enjoyed our story today. See you next time!
